Chapter 92: Complicated dinners (5)
"Lovely night isn’t it," Samuel said out loud after the tension at the dinner table had become overwhelming. Their normal chatter was gone now that Aurora wasn’t here and no one was speaking to each other. Minnie sat at the head of the table silently eating, his father held up a newspaper covering his face, Rachel was indulging herself in wine, and Regina was playing with her food.
Normally, there would have been a conversation brought up about Regina or Aurora and eventually, everyone else would chime in. Now, they were all ignoring each other. freewebnøvel.coɱ
"How was your day, Regina?" Samuel decided to initiate a conversation with Regina since she was the easiest to talk to but she completely ignored him. "Any word back from Seth yet? No one has seen him around since the festival. Maybe he went back home for a while but didn’t tell anyone. Regina-"
"Stop talking to me Samuel," Regina interjected without looking up at him. Maybe his head injury had given him memory loss because she had told her brother he was dead to her. What part of that did she not make clear?
Samuel gulped backing off of the conversation with Regina. By now, he was hoping she had gotten over the whole ordeal with Gilbert. He was only trying to turn a negative into a positive. He was certain Regina would forgive him soon because she had no choice. She couldn’t stay mad at her only sibling forever. "Mother, you should slow down with the drinks," he said after seeing his mother bring a fresh bottle.
"Samuel, your mother has had a long day. Please talk about something else," Rachel said, ushering the maid to pour her more to drink. "To survive this house you can’t be sober and I don’t know why I didn’t see this as the answer before. Cheers to this dysfunctional family."
"The door is always open when you’re ready to leave. No one here is holding you back. Go ahead," Minnie pointed towards the direction of the front door for Rachel.
"For you to hunt me down like Aurora so I can’t tell your secrets? No thank you. As long as my children are here, I will be too. It would make life so much easier for me if you would stop trying to play mother to my children and leave Regina’s marriage to me. Does it make any sense for you to want to entertain Gilbert’s proposal? The man is a pig and I will not allow you to ruin my daughter’s reputation all because of this obsession you have with Aurora. The girl is gone, get over it!" Rachel yelled frustrated she still had to hear Aurora’s name even after she was gone.
"Rachel," Nathaniel spoke up as it was evident his wife had drunk more than she could handle. What was so bad about the two of them helping Regina with her future marriage? "You must be mistaken thinking my mother will marry Regina to Gilbert. It was only to stop Regina from misbehaving."
"Really? By putting it in my head that you can marry me off to some old fart? How sick do you have to be to think that is okay?" Regina said in disbelief. She liked her father more when he quietly sat at the table. "You’re just as screwed up like your mother."
"Regina," Nathaniel warned in a low voice. Normally, she was his little princess but things changed with Aurora gone. He needed the girl back and Regina’s attitude was something he couldn’t put up with now. "Watch how you speak to your elders. We raised you to have respect."
"You can’t only ask for the youth to have respect for their elders. I am becoming sick and tired of all of you trying to plan out my life. It’s a shame that none of you have turned out to be good people," Regina went back to playing with her food.
"And you think you’re the only good one? From what you said, you turned your back on Aurora. What does that say about you? I am sick of hearing all of your bickerings. Shut up and enjoy the food prepared for us," Minnie ordered everyone at the table.
Nathaniel went back to reading the paper now that his mother had spoken which in return made Rachel laugh. "Always a mother’s boy," she muttered, going back to drinking more alcohol. Life would be easier when her husband woke up and realized how easy it was to kill his mother. Rachel gripped a knife in front of her. This was more than enough to end the woman’s life.
If only Nathaniel wasn’t a coward and waited so long to take over being the head of his house. Rachel wished her husband would start listening to her and send his mother away. ƒгeewёbnovel.com
Nathaniel paid no attention to Rachel since he did not want to upset his mother. She was already on edge because there was no sign of Aurora and if Rachel kept pushing, she’ll soon see the other side of his mother.
"That was fun," Samuel said to break the tension. Was this how their dinners are going to be now? With everyone upset with each other? When will everyone get over what happened and start acting like a family again?
"I’m finished," Regina announced standing up though she had barely eaten anything on her plate. She just couldn’t sit at the table like everything was fine. Before anyone could tell her to sit down, she left.
Regina slowly walked back to her room whilst looking out the windows in the halls at their neighbor’s homes. ’How is Aurora doing?’ she thought for a moment. Had that man truly protected her sister? Regina sighed looking away from the windows but stopped in her tracks when she came across a woman standing in the middle of the hall smiling at her. The woman looked familiar but right now, Regina couldn’t place who she was.
"We had a guest?" Regina said, wondering how the woman got here. She took a few steps back in case the woman was an intruder. "Who-"
"Miss Regina," Duncan’s voice interrupted her.
Regina jumped terrified from his sudden appearance. She looked at Duncan’s hands to see he was holding a piece of cake on a plate. She turned her focus back to the hall to ask him about the woman but she was gone. Regina found this strange since she didn’t hear the woman run or walk away.
