Chapter 91: Complicated dinners (4)

"There’s not a chance you have anything better to do when you come over almost every other day just to criticize my husband. You poke and poke trying to get a reaction out of him and when you don’t, you dig deeper. I cannot allow you to come under our roof and disrespect him. Have you not stopped and thought about how your words hurt me?"

"What have I said about you, Jane? I’ve said nothing other than wish you to be with a better husband and I can’t change how I feel. This whole thing seems a little dramatic for you to be banning me from your home. Tell me one bad thing I said to hurt your feelings?" Alice folded her arms, annoyed with the turn this night took. If her words hurt Derek, it only proved he wasn’t that much of a man. The women in her circle were more vicious than this. And when had she intentionally hurt her daughter?

"You have a habit of commenting on us having no children and never once have you taken it upon yourself to check up and see if I am okay. Have you ever thought to yourself, maybe I should have a nice woman-to-woman talk with my daughter because I know she wants children, and no matter how much she tries there hasn’t been any success? No, you always come and try to bring up his performance in the whole process and never stop to look at me and what I felt." freewёbnoνel.com

Alice was in disbelief Jane could say such a thing when she was always ready to comfort her girls. "You never brought up you were having any problems Jane and honestly, you’re tough as nails so I never know how to approach you."

Jane looked up in the air feeling tears build up in her eyes. She had been tired of hearing others ask when she was going to have children or how her sister already had two. Couldn’t they ever read the room? And her mother had some nerve pretending like her judgment wasn’t the reason Jane became this way. "Growing up with a mother like you, I had no choice but to have thick skin and show fewer emotions."

"Jane, how can you blatantly disrespect me like this? I raised you to prepare for the harsh words of others around while also spoiling you. Had I known you were going through hard times when it came to children, you honestly believe I would keep bringing it up to hurt you? I know what it was like waiting to be blessed with a child and I wanted for you to quickly have that experience because I know you will be a wonderful mother. Everyone in this family always paints me out to be the bad guy."

’And the tears will start now,’ Jane thought right on queue as her mother started crying since this was the way her mother loved to deflect her actions. As soon as she was placed in the hot spot, the tears would come right away. "Can you please just go?"

"Jane! Do you have any idea how many rumors and gossip there will be if people find out you banned me from your home? Do you want your mother’s name to be in everyone’s mouth? To have my reputation ruined? Jane, I always look out for you and this is how you repay me? By choosing that man and tossing me aside," Alice stood up placing her hands on her hip walking back and forth. She was too angry to sit down while Jane attacked her character. freёwebnovel.com

"His name is Derek. When you learn to accept that he is your daughter’s husband-"

"How can I bring up the type of person you married? What did he have to offer when he asked for your hand? What did his parents have to put forward for the wedding arrangements? Nothing! Only Derek benefited from this marriage and now people laugh at me behind my back when talking about their sons-in-law. Don’t you feel for me?" Asked Alice. Her daughter’s reputation affected her and that was why she was hoping Jane had the common sense to leave Derek.

"Get out right now," Jane proceeded to push her mother towards the door. "My marriage concerns no one but me and Derek. You always try to make things about yourself. A piece of advice mother," she said whilst opening the door and ushering her mother out. "Stop caring about others’ opinions and you’ll live a much happier life."

Alice looked around at the people passing by in front of Jane’s home wondering what was happening because they hadn’t heard the conversation. "Jane, let’s not cause a scene and talk about this like adults. I’ll come back with your father when Derek is here and we can discuss everything. Do not make this a big issue."

"Goodbye mom," Jane closed the door done with this topic for the night. Until her mother learned to respect Derek, she was no longer welcomed in the home they shared. Jane sighed knowing this was just the beginning of her mother’s retaliation not against Jane but Derek since she blamed him for everything. "I’m sorry dad," she apologized because her mother would run off and cry to him.

Jane wouldn’t be surprised if her sister showed up at her doorstep tomorrow begging her to make things right with their mother. When Derek returns home, she wasn’t sure if he would be happy or upset with what she did. Though he did not have a good relationship with Alice, he put up with her because he didn’t want to come in the middle of the two.

Jane felt stupid for how long she allowed this bad relationship to go on. She had been brave in more dangerous situations but in front of her mother, she had always been quiet. Jane didn’t like staying quiet and accepting the way her mother spoke to others. What she hated more was Derek slowly accepting that behavior.

"Tomorrow will be interesting," she went to the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of alcohol to drink the night away.
