Chapter 88: Complicated dinners (1)

Vincent was torturing himself waiting for Aurora to return the woman he once knew. So much that he might break his no smoking twice in a day rule soon enough. He knew he should’ve sat down and talked to her about what happened in the room but he overreacted and left. Vincent knew that Aurora wasn’t scared of him but you didn’t have to be scared of him at first to be haunted by the other side of him. The werewolf inside of him would force anyone to become afraid.

"Enough of this," he placed the empty glass aside and stood up out of his tub stark naked. His father was right in saying relationships can make even the smartest person act stupid and Vincent wasn’t even in one with Aurora. His parents would only laugh at his behavior had they been still alive.

He wrapped a thin cloth around his waist as he used the stairs built into the tub to leave. Dinner might be an awkward one with Aurora trying to cheer him up when she honestly did not need to. He should be the one apologizing for leaving so quickly. Vincent missed the opportunity to show how everything would be fine as long as they sit down and talk.

Vincent left his bathroom creating a trail of wet footprints behind him. Night was officially upon them and from his window, he had a clear view of the guards switching positions in the distance. They carried torches in their hands to light up their post for the night. There was also a group of people hired to go outside the gates and light up poles with lanterns at the top. Their eyesight in the darkness was impressive but the light was a precaution in case they missed an intruder sneaking by.

Anyone who went out the gates when they opened in the morning had to rush back to get inside the community before the gates closed soon. Anyone or anything caught trying to climb the walls after the gate was closed would be attacked if they failed to properly identify themself. There were some people brave enough to sleep outside the gates if they were too late to get inside but they risked dying if vampires attacked.

On the street beside his home, lanterns were being lit to give light to the streets. Where they thought he wouldn’t notice, Vincent saw two of his uncle’s followers watching him but he didn’t react to let them know he could see them. "Fools," he muttered moving away from the window. They missed a lesson in being out of sight to the person they were stalking.

What were they hoping to see by trying to peep at his window? Were they looking to see him naked or something? Confirm that he was a man? What was his uncle expecting him to do at the time for dinner when the only guest Vincent had was someone completely unaware of their family drama? There were enough capable men in this community for his uncle to hire to do a better job if he stopped being so cheaped.

"The rumors must be true," Vincent smirked, picking up another cloth to dry his hair with. He noticed recently that his uncle’s workers weren’t as experienced as before. They looked like regular men now just trying to do any job in exchange for money. What happened with his uncle and the more experienced men he used to have? "Is he truly going broke?"

The Lawerence’s all inherited wealth to last them a long time but since the arrival of his uncle’s new wife Cecilia, those funds must be running short. She loved wearing the most luxurious clothing, jewelry, and threw the most lavish parties. With her doing these things on a regular occasion, his uncle was to take a hit in his pockets. He might have money to last him a few more years but the money he inherited should’ve lasted a lot more.

"It all makes sense now," Vincent realized why Graham was reaching out to Victor so much now. Vincent created a few businesses and brought Victor in as his partner so his little brother would always have a steady flow of income coming in and the future wouldn’t be too bad. There was no way on this earth or no person to convince Vincent to either lend his uncle money or bring him into the businesses he had.

Since Victor had as much control in these businesses as Vincent, he had the power to hire anyone he wanted and that was where his uncle was trying to squeeze in. It was stupid for them to be allegedly low on money but still offer to throw a party for Victor. It was a good thing being dumb wasn’t a genetic thing. For most people at least. ƒreewebηoveℓ.com

Vincent paused for a moment to listen to footsteps approaching his door. It was Mari based on the way the person bounced here and there. The knock on his door and her voice telling him Aurora was ready and already seated at the table confirmed it.

"I’ll be down shortly. Start serving her if she is ready to eat without me," he replied from his end of the door.

"Okay."

When Mari left he started to get dressed into a long pair of pants and a shirt that left half of his chest exposed. Any other day he wouldn’t be wearing a shirt but out of courtesy for Aurora, he did. To be honest, he wanted to see her reaction to his bare chest. The way she spoke of him not being proper, he knew the reaction would be entertaining for him while she panicked on the inside. His half-open chest might be her undoing already.

Vincent exited his room, went down to the dining room, and found Aurora sitting all along dolled up at the head of the table where he would normally sit. Was he going to tell her that? No. He liked seeing her in that spot. "Aurora," he announced his arrival and enjoyed the red hue appearing across her cheeks when she noticed him.
