Chapter 74: Never try to deceive me (4)
Regina could only laugh because of how blind she was to Minnie’s true personality her entire life. Weren’t grandmother’s supposed to be sweet? Minnie had mastered the skill of being two-faced. Regina underestimated Minnie even after learning that she had something to do with the death of her grandfather. No wonder her mother hated Minnie. The woman influenced too many decisions in the house. free𝑤ebnovel.com
Regina imagined five strings signifying the relationships she had with her family. She thought of this because of a woman she heard stories of named Atropos. The string she had for Minnie had just been cut which meant Minnie was dead to her. She sealed that deal by threatening to marry her off to a horrible man like Gilbert. Only four more strings remained but a pair of scissors was waiting at the strings for her brother and father.
’This might have something to do with why Samuel apologized to me,’ she thought.
"Did you speak to my brother about this?" Regina asked. Who was on her side in this house?
"Of course I did. I had a talk with him last night about all of this and it was no surprise that he did not believe you either. No one-where are you going?" Minnie questioned when Regina started leaving the room. The girl truly had no manners since it was rude for her to walk away when her elder was speaking.
"Am I to stay quiet while you threaten me? And I am doing you a favor by walking away. You look stressed out and we all know how much you hate it when your age starts to show," Regina opened the door and stepped out at the same time Minnie cursed her.
She shouldn’t have said that to make things worse but she refused to leave without getting a jab back at Minnie.
’Either she goes or I go,’ she chanted over and over in her head. It wouldn’t be peaceful for her if Minnie is still alive and trying to threaten her with things because of Aurora.
"I need a distraction for her while I plan how to get her out of this house," she whispered walking the halls back to Samuel’s room because she had business with him. Regina heard maids talking down around a corner unaware that she was close by. "I observe many things in this house and know many secrets."
Regina slowed down her steps when Duncan was approaching her most likely to go to Minnie’s room. He bowed when he came beside her and then continued on his way. "I know many secrets like that one."
There was a point where she wondered why Duncan used to watch Minnie from afar like he was protecting her from something. Imagine Regina’s surprise when she caught the butler trying to kiss her grandmother but the woman waved him off. She never told anyone about it because she liked to save information like this. If Minnie’s little romance was put in the town’s paper, she’ll be frantic to fix her reputation. It’ll be killing two birds with one stone because Duncan was involved with trying to take Aurora away. freёwebnovel.com
"Would it kill you to smile more, Regina?" Rachel asked, seeing her daughter approaching Samuel’s door. "Where did you go? I wanted someone to always be with your brother in case he needs help."
"Minnie called me to her room because she wanted to talk to me about not finding Aurora. Because she thinks I am lying, she told me she’ll entertain the idea of me being married to Gilbert the merchant who visits her."
Rachel’s eyes could’ve popped out of her head at the news. "That witch. I’m the one handing who you get married to. I am your mother and how dare she think of Gilbert? Does she want our reputation to be tarnished? I won’t allow my daughter to be with such a man. Stay here with your brother."
Regina smiled as her mother asked her to while watching her storm off to have a talk with Minnie. At least there was someone else objecting to the idea of her marrying Gilbert. She opened Samuel’s door and saw him looking nervous now that she was back. "Let’s continue our conversation brother. Why did you apologize to me? What have you done? Did you tear the head off one of my dolls like in the old days?"
"Forget about it, Regina."
She ignored his words because it wasn’t the answer she wanted to hear. "Did you hide my favorite pair of shoes? Oh I know, you told mother I skipped a dance lesson. No? Might it be the fact you had a conversation about potential suitors for me with Minnie and when Gilbert was brought up you didn’t object because you’re now a puppet for our grandmother?"
Samuel sat up feeling apologetic towards his younger sister. Minnie said she wasn’t going to accept the offer before but now with everything happening with Aurora, she accepted the offer for Gilbert and Regina to meet and see if they were good together. "Listen, I have a plan, Regina."
Regina folded her hands waiting to hear what could plan he had to excuse the fact he did not warn her about this whole Gilbert thing. She was sitting with him here the entire morning. "Go on."
"Mother has been right about Minnie having too much control. She scares the hell out of me these days and I agree that we have to get her out of this house. Honestly, I’ve been around a lot of the men you could get married to and none of them are good. With Gilbert, he has a good amount of money and power because everyone looks to him for something. For now, we need to play along with her games, and in the meantime-"
"All I’m hearing Samuel is that you thought of how much Gilbert would be willing to help you against Minnie in exchange for me. I’m hearing that I would have to suffer being married to him while you try to plan something. Is that what you honestly call protecting your sister?" Regina sometimes called him stupid as a joke but she was right all along. "Even with what you did to Aurora I thought somewhere in the future you would never backstab me like that but here you were all along planning to use me. You’re dead to me, Samuel."
