Chapter 72: Never try to deceive me (2)
Samuel found Regina to be harsh with her response. Couldn’t she have at least lied to make him feel less guilty? She said it was so nonchalant like she was upset with him but he’ll remind her each time that she was right there next to him when they both betrayed Aurora. "What you did might hurt Aurora even more, right? There’s nothing more upsetting than a sister bond being broken or so I’ve heard."
Regina squinted her eyes and released a dry laugh. Was he trying to make himself feel less guilty by pushing more blame onto her? If only she could expose to him that she didn’t betray Aurora so easily as he did. "I don’t know about that Samuel. I’ll be pretty hurt if my older brother stabbed me in the back. We don’t say it much but girls look to their older brothers for protection. If you fail us or father fails us, it’s hard to put faith in any other man."
"Did you honestly have nothing to do with Aurora escaping?" Questioned Samuel looking for any signs of lies on Regina’s face. Somehow, he didn’t believe her because Aurora had magically gotten away.
"I should be asking you that brother. I left you with her and when I came back she was gone. Did you let her go and now you’re framing me?" Regina retorted. If he thought she was easy to break he had another thing coming. She prided herself for being a good actor these days and it was thanks to how many times she spent pretending to be someone else around certain family members.
"That would be plausible if I didn’t get my fucking head almost bashed open Regina! Do you really think I would risk father not trusting me anymore? Do you think I would want Minnie against me? You have no idea..." Samuel trailed off shaking his head because he couldn’t tell her all the things he knew. He had become terrified of Minnie in the last few days.
The woman he saw as his sweet grandmother was completely different from what he saw when it came to protecting the family business. He warned his mother afterward not to do anything stupid because he had watched Minnie order someone to be killed right in front of him. What she said while the man’s screams echoed in his head, surprised him even more. freeωebnovēl.c૦m
"If you can’t stand the sight of this Samuel then you are useless to me and this family. I don’t like having anyone I can’t use around for too long."
He was certain she was going to kill him if he didn’t step his game up in following his father’s footsteps. Samuel later learned from his father that Minnie had forced him to watch someone being killed when he was really young to drill in the idea that anyone who posed a threat to their family must have this same fate.
"I had nothing to do with Aurora getting away because I have too much to lose but you don’t Regina. I have a feeling that you are framing me. No one is going to believe that you betrayed Aurora for too long. The two of you were so close and you tried to defend her that night when Minnie wouldn’t let her go to the festival. I don’t know how you did it but you had something to do with me getting hit on the head."
"Should I call the doctor because there seems to be something wrong with our brain," Regina replied, still not falling for Samuel’s tricks to make her admit she helped Aurora. What made him think she was going to trust him to keep a secret? He could backstab her at any moment for his own benefit. "As I said before, I did what I did because I wanted Aurora to stay here with us. How can she survive going out there when she has lived such a shelter life here? If I wanted her to go, I would’ve gone with her."
"Why didn’t you go with her? You hate following the rules mother and society make you follow. You could’ve been free."
"The world out there has nothing that I want. I’ve enjoyed my life of being spoiled for too long to give it up now. I might hate following rules but I’m smart enough to know I wouldn’t survive one day in the real world. That is why I’m so worried for Aurora and I would appreciate it if you stop accusing me," said Regina.
"What is so special about Aurora that they are so desperate to get her back? Shouldn’t they all be singing praises that she is gone? They no longer have to keep up the fact that she is the child of our father’s mistress. Seth might be sad if he hears she left," Regina said, intentionally bringing up Seth to play on the jealousy she mentioned to Minnie. She put faith in her brother to go running back to Minne and tell her all of this. Everyone was trying to save their own ass here.
"Seth? He has other options than a woman he barely knew. The smart choice would be to pick you instead of any other young lady. I heard you were jealous he took interest in Aurora. To be honest, I don’t like the man for either of you."
’Me neither,’ Regina thought to herself.
She sat up when the door of Samuel’s room opened and she expected their mother had returned but it was only a maid who came to her. "Miss Minnie expects your presence in her room right away."
Regina glanced at Samuel wondering what on earth Minnie wanted her for. It might be to question her again about where Aurora had gone but Regina herself didn’t know where Aurora was. Even if she did, she wasn’t going to tell them. She mentally prepared herself for dealing with Minnie since her grandmother would be a lot harder to convince she didn’t help Aurora. She stood up ready to leave Samuel’s side when he randomly apologized to her. frёewebηovel.cѳm
"I’m sorry Regina. I truly am," he said but couldn’t meet her eyes anymore.
