Chapter 51: Trust (1)
Aurora ended up back into the crowd of townspeople away from the darkness. She figured if Seth escaped Vincent he wouldn’t be bold enough to show himself trying to kidnap a woman in front of the guards. She hurried through the busy festival ignoring the stall owners trying to show off what they had for sale. Another night maybe but right now her life was on the line and she had no idea where she was going.
"Aurora?" Came the voice of her one and only little sister Regina. It was a mere coincidence Regina had spotted that familiar white hair as soon as she stepped outside a shop. She followed after the person to confirm it was Aurora and now here she stood looking at her older sister who appeared to be out of breath and running from something or someone.
Regina looked back to the direction Aurora had come from and didn’t find anything to make her sister so nervous. She noticed the bag in Aurora’s hand and put it all together. "You’re running away? Was that your plan all along without telling me?"
Regina was a little bit upset Aurora didn’t plan to say goodbye. She did nothing to make Aurora think she couldn’t trust her.
"Goodbyes are hard and I didn’t want you to stop me or tag along. You have a better future in that home than me. I’m sorry I have to leave like this," Aurora glanced back behind where she came from to make sure Seth was not there. "Duncan was there with two men when you guys left."
The surprise was evident on Regina’s face as she stood there with her mouth open, completely unladylike. "You really had no choice. Where are you going?"
"I don’t know. I’m just running without a clue right now. I had a plan in my head and now that I am out here, I can’t think straight." freewebnøvel.com
"I will take you to where there are carriages taking people out of town. Come," Regina grabbed Aurora’s hand to lead the way.
"Why aren’t you with Minnie and your mother?" Aurora wondered watching the back of Regina. She was so sure they wouldn’t let Regina out of her sight in case she might try to return home so why was her sister all alone?
"They ran into a friend and sent me with the daughter but we both went our separate ways. I’m supposed to meet back up with her in an hour. I think she’s meeting some boy her mother doesn’t like," Regina said.
Because she was behind Regina, Aurora couldn’t see the frown forming on her sister’s face. Regina hadn’t gotten the chance to tell Aurora about the conversation she had with her mother about her future or the fact that Samuel might’ve had one with their father. This was a moment to see if the three of them could truly still trust each other.
"Once I’m better at protecting myself I’ll come to visit you, Regina. Right now I depend on others for help but I’ll get better and return. I promise. Truthfully, I’m not your sister or any kind of relative to you but you’ll always be my sister and Samuel too."
"I always knew he was my second sister," Regina smiled taking a jab at her brother. ’Please forgive me for this Aurora,’ she thought to herself. She needed to think about the future as her mother said.
"You know what I meant," Aurora chuckled. Some things would never change as Regina would always find a way to insult or tease Samuel.
"Here we are-"
"Regina? Why is Aurora here? She’s supposed to be..." Samuel trailed off when he looked at Aurora. Minnie had sent him to get a carriage to go home and check if Duncan had completed the job. He couldn’t look at Aurora too long before feeling guilty about what he had done. "She has to go back home right now. You have no idea-"
"She’s important to our family. That’s why I brought her here to you," Regina replied, shocking both Aurora and Samuel. Samuel wasn’t aware she knew anything and Aurora felt betrayed Regina had brought her to Samuel. "You should take her back home now."
"The two of you... since when did the two of you become like this?" Aurora questioned in a low voice looking away from the last two people she trusted in the Hamilton household.
"It’s been hard for me to make this-"
Aurora interrupted her brother with laughter. "Hard for you? Have the people you called family been using you for many years? Have they ever tried to have you kidnapped or killed? Have you ever woken up every morning wondering why you didn’t feel like you belonged in the only home you ever remembered? I don’t think it’s been hard for you like it has been for me. The last thing I was holding to was me being able to trust the two of you but the world is too greedy."
"I’m sorry Aurora," Regina apologized feeling torn on the inside. She never meant to hurt her sister and this was indeed too hard for her to do. "Keep her here Samuel. I’ll go get Minnie."
Samuel nodded and grabbed Aurora’s hand. He never imagined Regina would give up her relationship with Aurora so easily because they had always been closer to each other. He pulled Aurora’s hand to a spot where there weren’t too many people. He didn’t want to bring too much attention to them because many knew of him and his family.
Samuel looked down at Aurora who was silent. He couldn’t imagine the thoughts going through her head. Samuel spent an entire day trying to convince himself Aurora was not family but a tool they needed. However, the guilt had overwhelmed him to the point he could choke on it. "Aurora, listen-"
His words were cut off when something hard struck the back of his head and he leaned forward unconscious against Aurora’s body. Aurora was surprised by this and held onto him. She looked behind him to see who had done it and her eyes went wide with surprise. "You..."
