Chapter 225: A moment of peace (2)
"Timothy will be the new king?" Regina said in full disbelief of what she heard. "This has to be a joke," she rushed passed Minnie and the others.
There was no way Timothy would become king and not tell her after they had agreed to get engaged. She did not sign up to be a queen. When was he going to tell her about this?
"Answer me honestly, Timothy," she turned him around to look at her instead of the portraits on the wall. "Is the king really dead and will you take his place?"
"Word already got out," Timothy sighed, annoyed he wouldn’t be the one to explain everything to her. He came here today in hopes to tell her before the word could spread around.
"Like hell word got out. Honestly..." Regina’s voice died down when she realized they had an audience. "We’ll talk about this when we get in your carriage. Let’s go."
As much as she wanted to find out what was happening, Regina wasn’t looking to give Minnie easy information.
"Where do you think you are going?" Minnie asked, stopping Regina before she could pass by. With the news about Timothy potentially becoming the next king, a marriage between him and Regina sounded much better.
Minnie knew if she played her cards right this entire kingdom would belong to her. Witches would be able to once again roam free and she would make them find a way to give her eternal life.
"There is a lot for us to talk about-"
"Us?" Regina scoffed. "Last I checked he was courting me, not this entire family. If there is anything you wish to know, wait until the paper is printed. Do not answer anything, Timothy." freёwebnovel.com
Regina grabbed Timothy’s hand to drag him away from Minnie. She saw the smile appear on Minnie’s lips for a brief second before disappearing. There was no doubt the woman was thinking of how to make this benefit her.
When news reaches her brother and mother they’ll both be like this. Wishing to talk to her now that her status could potentially be far above theirs.
"Regina. Do not move another step. I forbid you," Minnie ordered the young girl with a stern voice. This wasn’t the time for Regina’s childish games. A member of their family becoming queen was a big deal. ’She has to get him before any other lady could make a move.’
Regina tuned out Minnie’s words as she led Timothy to the front door for them to leave. Minnie was seriously delusional if she believed Regina would want to speak with her.
The tight grip Regina had on Timothy’s hand was enough for him to know he had royally screwed up but he had been trying to tell her about it for a while. The kingdom wasn’t supposed to know about the king’s death or that Timothy was a candidate so soon.
The court ministers were still waiting for Timothy to make a decision and the deal was for them to wait until two more days were up. Some impatient person must have leaked the news in an attempt to pressure him into making a decision quickly.
As they reached Timothy’s parked carriage, Timothy offered Regina his hand to help her up into the carriage but she released his hand and got in on her own.
Timothy sighed, looking up to the sky for a miracle to fall and save him from the storm inside of his carriage.
"If you continue to look up much longer you might be blessed by a bird, not that I mind," Regina said without looking at him "Get in."
"Yes ma’am," Timothy got into the carriage like a son listening to his mother. "Where should I start..." he trailed off when Regina placed her index finger in front of her lips to shush him.
"We will talk after leaving the gates. I wouldn’t doubt Minnie being able to hear us," Regina informed him as she looked up the steps where Minnie with Duncan right behind her was looking at the carriage. "Get us as far away from here as possible and I will hear you out."
Right away, Timothy loudly tapped behind him where the coachman was seated. Seconds later, the carriage started to move. "Can I start now? Surely your grandmother won’t be able to hear us from here unless she is a hunting dog."
Regina folded her arms ready for an explanation that should make sense. "You’d be surprised."
"Right. Well, I’ve known about the king’s death for a while now but I have to clear up that I did not know about it when I started to court you. I was just told the ministers wanted to know if I wanted a position in the palace. I was then offered to become the next king while you and I were thinking about marriage," Timothy cleared up the first misunderstanding.
Now it was the moment for the other one. "I have not responded if I want to become king. It has never been something I thought about and with the upcoming engagement with you, I wasn’t sure if that would be the life you would want. It is full of too many rules."
"Are you saying that if I wouldn’t mind that kind of life you would give up the option to become king? Are you crazy? Do you know how many people would love to be you right now?" Regina couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
Had she been in his position, she would have become royalty and married someone else.
"The other family members will do just that. Those with sons would be looking to get rid of me and have their son become the new king. I am satisfied with the life I have now to not care about becoming king. I confessed my feelings to you so what made you think I would let this opportunity go to waste?"
Timothy enjoyed the dreams of a future with Regina rather than one in the palace.
"It’s easy for people to say that I might be crazy for thinking about turning down being queen but none of you have truly been in the palace like I have. Darius was a paranoid man to the day he died and truly did not wish to be like him. So I’m asking you, Regina, do you want to become a queen?"
"No," Regina didn’t have to think twice about the answer. The issue with her becoming queen was the history of the kingdom.
In the Harlow kingdom, it was said that countless creatures that were not human were hunted and killed. Imagine the chaos there would be if anyone were to find out their future queen was a witch. She would be burnt alive and Timothy would have to be the one to order it.
"Then that settles it. I will inform them that I will not become king," Timothy made up his mind now that he had Regina’s answer.
"Marry someone else and become king," Regina advised him. She didn’t share the same feelings he had and was using him to get back at her family. Timothy should accept this opportunity to be king and marry someone fit to be queen.
"I won’t," he disagreed.
"Then I will have no choice but to turn you down when you propose to me. I don’t want to be the reason you miss this once-in-a-lifetime chance just because I don’t want to be queen-"
"Are you the crazy one?" Timothy stopped her from rambling. "Did you miss when I said being king was something I never wanted? I like the peaceful life that I have now and who says it is a once-in-a-lifetime chance? I would just kill the next king if you change your mind."
"Ugh," Regina was lost for words that he would say this to her out loud. To say you would kill a king could get you imprisoned.
"Cat got your tongue? I’m not letting you go so easily. We will be engaged soon but I will have to speed it up before your grandmother starts meddling in our affairs. I have to let you know beforehand that I do not want your family in our business once we wed. Specifically Samuel and Minnie," said Timothy.
Regina wasn’t as convinced as him that he wouldn’t become king. He was the perfect candidate as he was the oldest unmarried male related to the king. Plus, the success he gained when fighting for the kingdom and increasing his wealth would make anyone pick him.
"I think I will have to look for another person to be my husband-"
"Then I will kill whoever you consider," Timothy stopped her in her tracks. He was very serious about it."
"My my, isn’t this toxic?" Regina became amused by his response. How much hold around his heart did she have for him to act this way? "I don’t like possessive men, Timothy. I like to avoid that type."
"I’m not possessive just getting rid of the competition. Whatever your concern about me being tied to the crown is, stop worrying about it. I would rather be married to you and live peacefully here with you trying to strangle me like the good old days," Timothy joked, causing Regina to snicker.
