Chapter 148: Mother knows best (2)

"Derek, we’re not leaving here until you tell me how you really feel. You were the one that always said communication is key and you’re not doing that right now. Tell me." Even though it was her mother he would have to speak against, Jane was fine with it.

"When you were away to send the message to the paperman, I had dinner with my mother and told her she wasn’t allowed to visit us anymore. The conversation wasn’t an easy one given how my mother is and even though she said she only has one daughter, she’ll be back. Would you like to move?" Jane suggested since the house had too much negative energy. They added two members to the family and it should feel vibrant, warm, and welcoming.

"Are you serious?" Derek had the thought earlier but he didn’t expect Jane would be the one to bring it up. They bought this house with the expectation of it being their forever home. Where they would raise their children. "Jane, I am not that upset for you to want to pack up and leave because of me."

Jane shrugged looking around what they were living in since they were married for seven years now. Seven years of being in love, trying to expand their family, and dealing with her mother’s antics. Good memories were made here but it was about time they started fresh and created more memories. "It’s not just because of you. I’ve grown tired of this house and the negative energy it’s accumulated over the years. Let’s get a new house and feel it with only positive energy."

No one looking to ruin their happiness would be allowed to step foot into their home. That was the mistake Jane made when she allowed her mother to keep visiting.

"Really? I’m down with staying here or moving. Whichever you are most comfortable with," Derek said.

"Let’s make preparations to move. Our neighbors are friendly but I am not certain how they will be with humans. We should find a home with a lot of open space for the children to run around but high enough walls for their privacy. I will look into it-"

"No, I will prepare the new house for us," Derek interjected. He had an issue with people thinking he had ruined Jane because of the life she could have lived if she had married someone with her status instead of him. He built up enough wealth over the years to be a man worthy to stand next to Jane but he never cared to flaunt it to anyone. Jane said she never cared for that lifestyle but the one thing he would love to give her would be a grand home.

"Okay," Jane agreed. They had to keep this on a low for now so no one could interfere with where they moved to. And for her mother to not be in their business again. Her mother most definitely did not know what was best for her daughters. "What are the girls doing? You left them alone for so long," she started walking to the guest room.

"They seem pretty quiet. Must be sleeping."

Back at the Hamilton house, Samuel and Regina parted ways after making the deal to work together. While her brother was busy thinking of her marriage candidates, she decided to have a talk with her father about being more involved in the family businesses. She needed to see how the businesses were run and meet the employees and business associates, in order to show she was useful. Only when she proved her worth will they let her in as they did with Samuel.

Samuel started to change when their father allowed him to learn things about the family business and from a conversation she had with Samuel, he said she didn’t understand what he had to go through. Which meant, he learned some of their family secrets.

The one person in this house Regina could get to listen to her was her father because she had him wrapped around her finger since birth. Parents should never have a favorite but since childhood, it was clear that her mother loved Samuel more as he was her ticket to owning this home and her father had loved her more.

"Father," she knocked on the door of his private room and waited. As long as her mother or anyone else doesn’t interrupt their private time, she would be successful with her plan. Regina took a deep breath when the doors of the room opened up. "Good day father." freёwebnovel.com

"Hello, darling. What do I owe for this visit? Are you bored or running from your mother or Minnie?" He questioned stepping aside for her to enter. It was so long since they had a father and daughter talk.

She used to visit him with something she took from the kitchen to eat. It was always funny to see her little hands trying to hold the tray. Rachel would scold her for doing something a maid or butler should do but he found it to be endearing what Regina did for her father.

"It might be the boredom. I haven’t seen Minnie and mother all day. Are you busy?" She asked after seeing a pile of papers on his desk.

"Not busy enough to see my daughter. What is on your mind?" Nathaniel closed the door behind them to have some privacy. The older Regina got her visits to him became time for her to vent her mind to him. freewebnσvel.cѳm

"As I said, it’s boring. I am the only one in this house who has nothing to occupy myself with. You, Samuel, Minnie, and even my mother have businesses to look after. Why can’t I do the same?"

"You’re at the age to get married, Regina. You can’t be stressing yourself out with the family business. Your mother has set up many classes to keep you busy and at the same time prepare you for the future. Have fun with them," her father urged her because the classes were coming out of his pocket and the least she could do was pretend to enjoy them.

"Right. I must continue to spend the rest of my youth preparing to serve a man and dance pretty among his peers. Then as I get older he won’t look at me anymore and entertain younger women. Nothing says enjoy my classes more than that," Regina forced a smile to the point it became creepy.

Nathaniel chuckled seeing Regina’s facial expression then coughed to hide it. "There are plenty of couples who love each other. Like your mother and I-"

Regina’s snickering made her father stop his speech. Her parents got married for the wealth each other had. Sure they got along well but it wasn’t a marriage to convince anyone to have. Her father ignored her mother’s antics and her mother spent most of her days cursing her mother-in-law. "Carry on father. I didn’t mean to interrupt your delusion."

"Each new day I keep wondering who influenced you more in your youth to have this type of personality. You spent most of the daytime with your mother as she took you around to parties and sometimes you would come to visit me at night when I was still working," Nathaniel smiled remembering the precious memories. Life was much simpler when his children were much younger. Now they’ll be caught up in the secrets of their home and life will be hectic.

"I like to believe that I got it from none of the two of you. Back to what I said before, I don’t want to depend on my husband in the future and I think it’s best that I get involved with a family business. I have always wanted to but I was stuck with dance classes. We have so many businesses and it feels foolish for me to not see how we managed to get to where we are today. I want to play my part at least until I am married."

To play with her father as she did in the past, Regina pulled out her secret weapon which was sad acting in front of her father. "Minnie hates me these days and threatened to marry me off to someone like Gilbert, you and Samuel are always busy, and I have never felt close to my mother. It feels like I am the odd one out in this family. Cast to the side to just be pretty and wait for a husband. With what happened to Aurora, I know that none of you don’t trust what I said."

Nathaniel sighed feeling for his daughter. He had always treasured and given her everything she ever asked for but allowing her to work was not something he wanted to give her. Her hands should remain as soft as they are now and never become rigid from too much work.

"Do you trust me, father? Or do you believe that I made Aurora get away?" She asked with puppy eyes.

"I was not there to know what happened but at the same time, I know that you love Aurora enough to let her go if she wanted to leave. Even if that was what happened, I still trust my daughter." Nathaniel blamed his mother for what happened instead of Regina.
