Chapter 149: Mother knows best (3)
Nathaniel blamed Minnie for allowing his children to grow so close to Aurora when she knew they needed to use the girl. If she had listened to him, Aurora would have been locked up somewhere until it became time for her to be of some use and his children wouldn’t have to care about what happened to the girl.
He believed his mother was upset about something that happened in the past between her and the Aurora she knew and was trying to make it up to this new Aurora. The whole story about him having a mistress and a child outside of his marriage had been ridiculous in his eyes and the only reason he went along with the stupid plan was that his mother threatened him.
"Don’t worry about Aurora and what everyone else is saying. Since Samuel can’t confirm anything that happens, I will not hold it against you. And even though the two of you are not speaking, I like to think you wouldn’t allow someone to almost kill your brother by knocking him out."
"No," Regina honestly denied the claim because it was true. She didn’t allow anyone to almost kill Samuel by knocking him out because she was the one that hit him in the first place. She preferred to do things like that herself.
"See. There’s nothing for me to worry about and I plan to have Aurora back here one way or the other. She can’t hide from us for too long. Back to you working at a family business, as much as I would like to see you earning some money of your own, this would cause a headache between me and your mother. You are to be married soon and if you are concerned about finances you can always run back to me. Not that I plan to marry you off to a man who can’t support you."
"I understand that but I am not married yet and I want to at least have spent some time around the businesses which have provided us with the life we have. That is all I wish for. Please, just until I am married or if it becomes too much for me to handle. When I get married, I want to own businesses so that I can create an empire for my children to have," Regina said.
"You’re really serious about this. Fine, I will allow you to do this but at the first sight of you not being able to handle it I will make you stop. Your mother is not going to let me hear the end of this," Nathaniel already hears his wife in his ear scolding him for allowing their daughter to work.
Regina on the other hand jumped up excited and ran around the table to hug her father. "Thank you father," she kissed him repeatedly on his cheek.
"Yes, yes. Kiss me until I die."
Just then, the door of his private room opened and Rachel walked in confused by the sight of her husband and daughter. "What is happening here? Regina, don’t you have anything better to do than annoying your father when he has work? It is almost time for one of your classes to start."
Regina tilted her head to look at her father’s face and said, "He doesn’t look annoyed to me." freewёbn૦νeɭ.com
"I am enjoying my daughter’s visit Rachel. What is it that you need? I seem to be popular today," Nathaniel said because of his two visits so far.
"I wanted for us to go out and enjoy time alone tomorrow. It is almost our wedding anniversary and I refuse for us to be stuck here in this home with our children and your mother. I want to dress up and eat something nice so please, make it happen." Rachel had big plans for their anniversary before Minnie’s little affair happened. She wanted dinner with close friends at the house and now she was stuck in the house with no guests. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom
"I will see what I can do about it," Nathaniel replied. He wouldn’t let her know he had actually forgotten about their wedding anniversary.
"You are the man of this house, you can most definitely make it happen and you," she pointed at her daughter who never seemed to be where she was meant to be. "Go back to your bedroom and prepare for dance lessons or read a book. Whichever one will keep you out of everyone’s way."
"See what I mean father? Cast to the side like I don’t matter," she referenced what she had told him earlier.
"Rachel, I said I don’t mind her being here. She can take one day off from doing those things and stay here with me. Just to give you a heads up, Regina will start working at one of our businesses. Pick a good one that won’t be too hard for her to lead."
Rachel saw red when her husband told her their daughter was going to work. "Have you lost your mind, Nathaniel? What sense does it make for our daughter to work? She is a Hamilton lady. She does not need to work."
"You are in charge of several of our businesses dear. I have already made up my mind for Regina to do the same. Do not argue with me as I am not changing my mind. She might take part in her husband’s business like I have done with you. It would be good for her to have a start before she gets married to know the ins and outs of a business."
Rachel placed her hand on her head to calm herself down. She must be the only person in this room with common sense. They don’t see the other young ladies from other prominent families working. They were busy trying to snag themselves a good husband and secure their future. "This does not make any sense Nathaniel. I’m sure that even Minnie won’t like this."
"My mother will have to learn to accept my decision as will you. This is not up for further discussion Rachel." One of the things Nathaniel grew to hate recently was people not accepting the decisions he made. His mother did it his entire life and now his wife did it. When he said something, it should be final. He was growing tired of still being under his mother’s command when he was meant to be in charge. She had her time when she was younger.
"Nathaniel-"
"Rachel!" He yelled, stopping her from pushing the situation any further. His sudden yelling startled both Regina and Rachel who had never seen him get this angry before. He was always calm and collected.
Rachel straightened up herself after almost staggering backward when Nathaniel yelled at her. She had never felt so insulted to have him yell at her like she wasn’t his wife. She was looking out for the best interest of their daughter. Between her and Nathaniel, she knew what was best for her daughter because she had been in Regina’s shoes when looking for a husband. "Regina, follow me."
Rachel did not want to speak to her husband after his behavior in front of their daughter. He might have agreed to it but she did not and Rachel planned to stand ten toes down on her daughter not working. She was going to have a chat with Regina because she was certain it was her who brought this idea to her husband.
"Now I am going to die father," Regina gave him one last kiss on the cheek before she followed after her mother. "Good luck," she heard her father say behind her.
Regina left her father’s private room which wasn’t so private today and found her mother not too far outside tapping her foot against the floor with her arms folded. "Yes mother," she made her presence known.
"Regina, why is it that all of a sudden your father is suggesting we allow you to work? I don’t find it to be a coincidence that it happened after you paid a visit to his room. What are you up to girl?"
"Nothing, just getting to see how our businesses work. I don’t see what the big deal is when you run a few which means you work. Unless someone does all the work for you while you sit and take the credit? I will still be doing the same lessons I have done from a young age. I promise," Regina held up her hand to swear on the promise but her mother couldn’t see her since she was backing Regina.
"You. I have reached my wit’s end with all of your nonsense. Everything I have worked so hard to do for you is going to waste because of this attitude you have. I understand you are young and don’t realize how important these moments are which is why I have been trying to help you. Do you want to be stuck here with this god-awful family forever? Don’t you want to go out and have your own life?"
"It annoys me every time you say that mother. The first marriage I look to as an example of what I might one day have is yours and I am disappointed by what I see."
