Chapter 111: Chapter 111

The rave of the sports events faded quickly, the bustle of tests overwhelming it, and with the end of the tests came rain.

Henri brought his study chair across his room to place it by the window to watch the rain fall. He just had dinner so it was dark out, the lightly falling rain lulling him to a doze.

"Audie, let’s return to the dorms, it’s about to rain," Valentin said with a hint of worry in his voice.

Audie liked to wander around the college grounds at night, it wasn’t against the rules as they weren’t leaving the boundaries. Right now, the Alpha had somehow found what looked to be an abandoned storehouse. It was so far removed from the main parts of the college grounds that most students and professors didn’t even know about its existence.

The storehouse in question was overrun by vines and was tucked in a hidden corner past the residential areas of the academic staff. So while it wasn’t exactly against the rules for them to be there, if they were found by a professor, they would get a reprimand.

"But we haven’t even checked it out." Audie protested, pushing apart the vines in a bid to find a door.

Power had been cut from the building a long time ago so the only source of light was from the moon which was rapidly being covered by rain clouds.

Valentin crossed his arms, peeved. "Then we’ll check it out on another night that hopefully has no rain."

"Getting past the professors’ houses isn’t easy, and the rain isn’t falling yet..." Audie refused to give in, finally creating a path through the vines to get to the half-destroyed door.

He opened the door and a swarm of bats flew out at the same time that the first droplets of rain fell from the sky.

Valentin jumped behind Audie to hide, a shrill sound leaving him as the bats had come straight for him.

Audie let him hold onto his arm and didn’t tease him for being jumpy. "Sorry about that, want to stay in the storehouse till it stops raining?"

Valentin peeked into the dark interior of the building, a look of misery on his face. The rain was already getting his hair and shoulders wet, water dripping down his face.

They were a really long way from the dorms, if they tried to return now, they would be soaked by the time they got to their dorm room. But the storehouse was really scary, what if there were more bats in there?

"Alright." He agreed grudgingly, letting Audie lead the way in. "Don’t go too far in." He protested when it seemed like Audie wanted to investigate the storehouse further.

"Fine," Audie said with humor, stopping in place.

They stood in the dark room for a while, hearing the rain get heavier the longer they waited. Valentin held tightly to Audie’s arm the entire time, getting jumpier and jumpier the more time they spent in the abandoned storehouse.

Just like the exterior, the interior was run over with vines and weeds. There were also questionable noises from insects and little animals running around, the falling rain only served to make it more ominous.

Audie on the other hand was unruffled, he was already making plans on how to return here in the daytime. If they were caught by a professor or a staff member, they wouldn’t be allowed here anymore...

His thought processes were brought to a screeching halt by Vale nearby ripping his eardrums, his friend screamed and then jumped on him, frantic.

"Audie, Audie, something touched me." He panicked, wrapping his arms and legs around his taller friend.

Audie had a hard time keeping his balance, this time he didn’t stop himself from laughing. "It’s probably just a vine."

Valentin tucked his head in Audie’s shoulder, if he couldn’t see the dingy storehouse, he could pretend that he was back in his bright, warm dorm room. "Vines don’t have teeth, Audie." He said resolutely, his voice muffled.

"Oh..." Audie murmured in a distracted voice, bending down with Valentin still in his arms which made the Alpha freak out. "It’s just a rat." He said, straightening up.

Valentin was about to pass onto the afterlife, "Did you pick it up? Tell me you didn’t pick it up." He said in a frenzy, his voice shrill.

"Look, it’s just a little harmless rat..." Audie didn’t get all of his words out because Valentin’s panic made him lose his footing and fall backward.

Fortunately, a thick crisscross of vines broke Audie’s fall, Valentin falling on him with a scream loud enough to shatter glass. He let out one last sound of misery when he felt the rat escape Audie’s hold and scramble across his back. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom

"I’m never going to forgive you." He seethed, still draped across Audie.

He would have gotten to his feet and stomped out of the storehouse but he was too terrified to move, his face still hidden in Audie’s shoulder.

Audie looked to have gotten comfortable on the bed of vines. "Don’t be so loud, you don’t want us to get caught." He teased, still finding the whole situation entertaining.

He placed his hands on Valentin’s waist so that they wouldn’t trail on the ground, staring up at the abysmal darkness that was the ceiling of the storehouse.

Valentin’s unexpected but vicious pinch made him shout in pain. "Don’t be so loUd, you don’t want us to get caUght." He mocked him, pushing up to a sitting position. "I don’t care about the rain Audie, we’re leaving." He said decisively, getting to his feet.

Audie hesitated for a few beats before getting to his feet as well, "Alright, I promise there’ll be no more rats, let’s just wait out the rain..."

Valentin pinching the side of his neck quickly shut him up, and he started for the door. "I mean, let’s leave." He immediately corrected, wondering just how his friend had unerringly found his neck in the darkness.

It was still raining when they left the storehouse but there was more light under the night sky than there was in the abandoned building. This time, Valentin did the pulling. He took Audie’s hand and ran for the dorms.
