Chapter 473: Chapter 466: As Long as a Man Still Feels Guilty Toward His Former Woman, His Heart Can’t Go Far
Inside the hospital room, Sienna Hale finally nodded in reluctant agreement after hearing her son and husband out. "Alright, fine. We won’t transfer you for now. Seth, what do you want to eat? I’ll have Mrs. Cheney make it and bring it over. Or, this room should have everything, right? I could just have Mrs. Cheney come take care of you."
Afraid his mother would start nagging endlessly if he rejected all her proposals, Seth Quinn relented with a nod. "Let’s skip having her come over to take care of me. Just have her bring me meals every day."
"That works too. It’s settled, then."
"..."
Clara Grant left the hospital room and sat on a bench outside the door, lost in thought.
’They say dating is between two people, but marriage is between two families.’
’She and Seth Quinn could certainly love each other, but she couldn’t ignore Sienna Hale’s attitude toward her. If her background hadn’t been exposed, maybe her mother-in-law wouldn’t be so dissatisfied with her.’
’But in this world, there are no ’what ifs’.’
’The relationship between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law is difficult enough as it is, let alone when you’re a daughter-in-law your mother-in-law can’t stand!’
"What’s the matter? Realize you were an eyesore in there and decided to come out?"
She was lost in thought when a voice dripping with sarcasm suddenly reached her ears. Clara Grant instinctively looked up.
Upon seeing Autumn Shelby standing before her, Clara Grant’s expression remained remarkably calm. She merely arched an eyebrow and said coolly, "You’re out too. Does that mean you know you were an eyesore in there as well?"
Autumn Shelby was taken aback, a flicker of anger crossing her face. Of course, she knew that while Sienna Hale’s attitude toward her was good, she was the only one who felt that way.
The other three men in the room hadn’t been welcoming, especially Seth Quinn. Since she’d walked into the hospital room, he had only glanced at her once.
She could feel his indifference, and Clara must have seen it too. So when Clara said she was an "eyesore," wasn’t she just saying she was an eyesore to Seth?
To Autumn Shelby, no one’s opinion mattered more than Seth Quinn’s. Kindness from anyone else couldn’t bring her the same joy as kindness from him.
Likewise, disapproval from anyone else couldn’t wound her as deeply as his.
For Clara Grant to say that was like rubbing salt in her wound.
Autumn Shelby nearly flew into a rage out of humiliation, but she managed to restrain herself.
She let out a cold laugh, turned, and sat down beside Clara Grant.
"Hah, I didn’t realize you had such a sharp tongue." She shot Clara a look, her eyes filled with scorn. "Do you really think that just because you have Seth’s affection now, you’ll have it for a lifetime? How long have you even known him? Sooner or later, the novelty will wear off."
"But me? I’ve known him for more than twenty years. We don’t need novelty. So when he gets over this little phase with you, he’ll eventually come back to me. You know I went through so much pain and torment for his sake, and I believe... he still has feelings for me."
"Is that so?" Clara Grant turned to meet her gaze, the corner of her lip hooking into a nonchalant smile. "The feelings he has for you are guilt, at best. Not love. He said so himself just a little while ago. Surely Miss Shelby isn’t so forgetful that you’ve already forgotten?"
Clara Grant was already in a bad mood, and with Autumn Shelby choosing this moment to provoke her, she was no longer content to simply ignore her.
She didn’t often show her claws, but that didn’t mean she was a pushover who would let herself be bullied.
Autumn Shelby seethed at Clara’s incisive retort. It took her a long moment to mask the fury in her eyes. Then, she arched an eyebrow and said in a slow, deliberate drawl, "As long as a man still feels guilty about a woman from his past, his heart can never truly move on."
