Chapter 396: Chapter 396: Am I Wrong?
Edie looked at the ground, "Thank you. It must’ve fallen out of my purse." She quickly picked up the money and put it in her pocket.
The little boy turned to look at Ivan and stopped crying immediately. He stared at Ivan with cold and vicious eyes. The expression on the boys’ faces troubled him and made him shiver slightly. It means he did not understand.
"Let’s take you to get something to eat," Edie said as she picked the boy up.
Ivan had an unsettling feeling every time he looked at the child. "Where did he come from?" he asked with a curious tone in his voice.
Edie shook her head and turned to face Ivan. "I have no clue, but he’s hungry, and we’re going to take him to get something to eat first. We can go to the police station after we’re finished," she said as concern etched her face."He’s just a little boy. Thank goodness, he found me and not....." she didn’t finish her sentence. She didn’t even want to think about what could have happened to him.
Ivan looked in the rearview mirror as he spoke. "Mr. Yates will know what to do. I’ll talk to him before we go to the police." For several seconds, he stared into the child’s eyes. It was like a switch had been turned on, his eyes and face changed. He was looking at Ivan as if he were the devil himself. When he looked at Ivan, it was an expression of evil that appeared on his face, but then he turned on his expression of blank innocence whenever he looked at Edie. The look in his eyes sent a shiver through Ivan. His whole body tensed and shook.
Edie was staring out the window, apparently lost in her own thoughts. She didn’t notice the two of them exchange a look. She nodded her head in agreement. "Yes, that’s a good idea. Stuart knows Britain well. I wouldn’t feel comfortable leaving him at the police station by himself."
They arrived at the restaurant, Ivan opened the door, and the little boy squeezed Edie’s hand. He stood behind her and screamed, "He scares me! I don’t want him to come with us," the little boy said, in a low and frightened voice.
Ivan was stunned by his reaction. "What are you talking about? I don’t look scared." He looked at Edie wide-eyed and speechless.
The little boy wrapped his arms around Edie and started crying. "I don’t like how he looks at me," he said and smiled broadly at Ivan. When Ivan saw the look in his eyes, it was the same look he revealed to him in the car. He thought, ’This little boy is going to be trouble.’
Edie didn’t know what to do. She didn’t want the child to be frightened, and she didn’t want Ivan to be upset. She took a deep breath and looked at Ivan. "Would you mind sitting at another table? When we’re done, we’ll go see Stuart."
Ivan agreed. "Mrs. Yates, please be careful," he said. There was meaning to his words, but Edie was too worried about the child and didn’t even notice. She took him by the hand, and they sat down at a table. "Do you still want a steak?" she asked.
He looked up at Edie with the most adorable green eyes she’d ever seen. He smiled and said, "Can you choose for me?" freewebnovёl.ƈom
He really took her, and it seemed the more she spent time with him, the more she liked him. He was perfectly obedient and lovable. She couldn’t help wondering what kind of life he led. ’He’s kind, sweet and considerate. How could a parent be so careless and lose their child?’ She watched him while he ate. "What’s your name?" she asked.
"My name is Cecil Keen," he said after he swallowed his food.
’Was he named after a movie star? How could a mother ever give her child such a name?’ she wondered.
Cecil noticed Edie’s expression change and asked, "Why does your face look so weird?" Then he gave her a doubtful look.
"I’m sorry, I was just thinking. How old are you?" Edie responded, trying her best to adjust her expression back into a mixture of sympathy and concern. "Do you know where you live or where your parents are?"
"No, I’m only five, and I don’t know my address." He looked into Edie’s eyes and let out a deep breath. "I haven’t seen my father very much since my mother passed away." His voice sounded so sweet and soft. "My Aunt gave me money, but I lost it," he said, lowering his head, and big tears fell down his cheeks.
The pleading look in his eyes softened Edie’s heart. With her fingertips, she wiped the tears off his cheeks. "Why has your father been away for so long?" she asked curiously. His sad, glassy eyes stared at her as she shivered and swallowed. She breathed a sigh of relief. "I thought your parents abandoned you, but you’re just lost. Don’t worry! I’ll help you get back home safely." She looked at him curiously and asked, "I’ve noticed that you sometimes speak French. Who taught you?"
Cecil was quick to respond to Edie’s question. "My father taught me," he replied. Then a smile appeared on his face. "You’re pretty! My father told me that women who look like you always have a boyfriend. Is that true?" Then he wiped his nose with the back of his hand,
Edie laughed at his remark and gently tapped on his back with her hand. "You know a lot about your age."
Cecil opened his eyes wide, and his face lit up with a smile of excitement. "Do you have a boyfriend? Maybe when I grow up, I could be your boyfriend."
"Do you know what a boyfriend is?" Edie asked, tilting her head.
"Well," Cecil said bravely. "He’ll cherish you, adore you, and pamper you every day and night forever," he said, his face suddenly serious.
His words touched Edie’s heart. She began to laugh. "Who told you this?"
Cecil’s eyes narrowed in disappointment. "Am I wrong?"
Edie nodded her head and said, "No, not at all!"
Cecil grinned at her. "You’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. You’re even prettier than my Aunt."
Edie gently rubbed his cheek and said, "Thank you. Now finish eating, and then we’ll see if we can find where you live."
Cecil nodded his head in agreement. He lowered his head to finish eating, and suddenly a sly smile appeared on his face.
