Chapter 376: Chapter 376: You’re Challenging Me
"I hope you wake up soon because Anne worried about you." Edie paused for a moment, trying to understand the meaning of it all. "What your mother did to you was horrible. How many years you’ve suffered because of her." Upon turning to look at him, there were a few tears in her eyes. "I always thought you were a hateful and vindictive man, but now that I know the truth. Everything I know about you has changed." freёweɓnovel.com
Childes’ eyes opened, he focused on Edie the best he could, his eyelids never managing to part more than halfway. Then his eyes fluttered closed after a few seconds. Edie never noticed because she turned her head right at that moment when she heard the doctor talking outside the room.
"Anne and Wilson are anxious about you," Edie continued in a low voice.
"And what about you?" Childe cut her off abruptly. His voice was low and weak.
Hearing his voice, Edie was stunned for a second. "You’re awake," she said, sounding relieved.
"What about you?" Childe asked again, breaking a long silence. "Tell me the truth! Have you been worried about me too?" freewebnσvel.cѳm
"Yes, I’ve been worried about you," Edie returned through a clenched jaw. There was a slight hesitation, almost a shiver before she continued. "I’m finding more and more about you. You’re not the man I thought you were. There are so many things I want to know." She took a deep breath, not knowing what to say next. "Tell me what really happened to Marina. I want to know the truth about what happened all of these years ago." The words surprised even herself as they lingered in the air, waiting for Childes’ answer.
Childe stared straight ahead of her in stony silence. When he spoke, at last, his voice held a note of sarcasm. "Are you living in a fairy tale?" His eyes opened wide, his face expressionless. "You want the truth?" He took a deep breath. "The truth is I’m the one who killed Marina. I’m guilty of heinous crimes, and I’m a wicked man." His voice grew very cold. "Leave me alone, or I’ll do the same thing to you," he shouted.
A sudden bitterness took possession of her. "You’re not that little boy anymore. You’re a grown man." Edie gives him an annoyed look. "You’ve spent a lifetime not allowing anyone to get close to you. Do you have any idea how many people in your life who want to be there for you?"
They sat there, silent for a while. "You think you know me, but you don’t," When Childe finally spoke, his words surprised her.
"I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to offend you." Edie said, her voice shaking a little bit. "Are you going to let me go now?" she asked.
"Let you go? The game is only getting started," Childe sneered.
Edie scowled at him, "Why won’t you let me go? What do you want from me?"
A grin quirked in one corner of his lips. "What do I want? Oh! You will soon find out," Chile said, his tone emotionless. Then he picked up his phone and looked at the time. "It’s three o’clock! I wonder if he’s arrived yet?" he said as he looked at Edie.
Edie’s heart leaped at his words. "He....he’s here..." she hesitated and looked at Childe with hope in her tear-filled eyes.
Childe spoke, his voice rising and falling, sounding angry and tired at the same time. "Yes, the man who you’ve been longing for every day and every night is right downstairs." He begins to laugh. "You will see how strong your precious Stuart is in my presence."
"Stuart’s been downstairs this whole time? Why would you do this to me?" Edie said frantically.
Childe snapped his fingers, and two bodyguards rushed over and grabbed Edie. They tied her hands behind her back. She was just about to scream when they put a piece of tape over her mouth. "You didn’t think I would let you see him? Did you?" Childe said with disdain. "Take her to the second floor and keep her hidden," he ordered the bodyguards.
Edie’s pupils contracted with fear as the men took her out of the room. All she could think about was Stuart. ’Stuart’s help me,’ she screamed in her mind, and the tears began to fall.
Childe walked slowly down the stairs, and Stuart became visible to where he was standing. He stopped, but only for a second. He didn’t know what Stuart was thinking or even if he wanted to know. But, he soon regained his composure and went on. His bright fox eyes narrowed. "Wilson told me you arrived earlier. Must you be tired? After all, you just got back." He spoke with an admonishing tone.
Stuart looked at him suspiciously. A faint smile crossed his face, and he murmured. "Where are you keeping Edie," he asked him coldly.
Childe smiled his best innocent smile and said, "It really hurts me that you didn’t even ask how I was."
"You were never good at acting. Quit trying to be an innocent bystander. We both know that’s not who you are." Stuart squinted fiercely at him. "I’ll ask again. Where is Edie?" Then he rushed over and grabbed Childe by the collar of his shirt and lifted him off the floor.
"Only Edie can drive you this crazy," Childe laughed. He ignored the anger in Stuart’s voice. His expression remained the same, showing no emotion, but there was a hint of cruelty in his eyes. "Oh! So you know she’s here? I thought you already knew what Edie’s fate is? Of course, you do! It’s the same as Marina...."
Stuart his Childe in the face before he could finish his sentence, Childe stood still for a moment, and then he quickly wiped the blood from his mouth. He raised his head and looked at Stuart. He tried to stay calm and kept the antagonism out of his voice. "My big brother is angry with me,"
"This is beyond anger, and you know that. The first day I brought her back, you should’ve known what was going to happen. It’s been seven long days, and you tell me she’s getting the same treatment as Marina." Stuart focused, intense, the resolute expression on his face turned very cold and very still.
Aaron raised his voice and said, "She’s not great at being a housewife. How can you stand being around her?" The sarcasm in his voice was obvious.
Stuart glared at him, and his pupils were constricted as the words Childe spoke were sufficiently powerful. "You’re challenging me, aren’t you?" Catching Childe off guard, Stuart sprinted forward and struck him in the face again.
