Chapter 278: Chapter 278: Master is Fine
Edie didn’t know how long she was unconscious. She woke up to the scent of sanitizer, the smell lingered in the air and made her nose crinkle. She slowly started to recall the events of last night. Then Edie remembered it was Jason and Scarlett who took her to the hospital.
Suddenly, a gentle and aged voice appeared. "Mrs. Yates, you’re finally awake?"
Edie raised her head and saw Mr. Bates sitting close to the bed. Frantically looking around the room, she noticed there was only her and Mr. Bates there. Feeling a little upset, she silently said, "Stuart...is, not here?"
Edie was a bit confused and looked sad. Noticing the disappointment on her face, Mr. Bates smiled and explained, "Master is changing his dressing on his wound. He will be back shortly. You were unconscious for over twenty-four hours, and the Master was extremely worried about you."
Edie caught the critical point immediately and said, "Changing his dressing? He’s hurt?"
Mr. Bates realized that he unintentionally revealed a secret. Then he thought. "Master told him not to say anything to Mrs. Yates about his wound. I never expected she would be listening so carefully." With a reassuring voice, he said, "Master is fine, no need to worry. But there is something that I would like to talk to you about. You are aware of what happened to Marina ten years ago? Is that right?" Mr. Bates said calmly.
Edie froze in fear, and her heart began to pound. Her face turned bleak and pale. She couldn’t help thinking. "I’m just a young, average woman. I never imagined I could be involved in such deep, dark secrets. What that woman must have suffered, she must have been horrified. What kind of people is the Yates family? I don’t understand what kind of family would make brothers turn against each other?" Edie’s mind was racing to the point of pain.
Seeing the expression on her face, Mr. Bates immediately knew what she was thinking. He completely understood because he knew it wasn’t easy to accept any type of secret. Let alone a tragedy like this.
"Mrs. Yates, I understand how you are feeling. You must have so many questions for Stuart. I came here today to tell you about Stuart’s past because it was too hard for him to do it himself," Mr. Bates said.
Edie replied, "Okay, tell me."
Mr. Bates cleared his throat and slowly continued, "Ten years ago, when Master was still a high school student, Marina was one of his classmates. They did date one another. However, since the Master’s personality was frigid, most of the time, they only went to the opera and classical concerts together. They hadn’t even held hands."
Edie nodded; she could understand. It was just like when she dated Donald Lynch in high school, they had emotional bonds, but no physical contact.
"Since the aristocrats in Europe had a convention of early marriages, the family arranged a marriage for Master. Master was strongly against the marriage, and to show he wasn’t happy with the arrangement, he got engaged to Marina regardless of his family’s disapproval." Mr. Bates said with a serious tone in his voice.
Edie was clearly surprised by what Mr. Bates told her. She had always seen Stuart as a modest and prudent man, and she couldn’t believe he would act in this way.
"It wasn’t long after, and Master Aaron kidnapped Marina." He said with great seriousness.

"At first, no one suspected Master Aaron, and the investigation went in the wrong direction. When the Master finally found Marina, she was barely alive. She was not only raped but also injected by a substantial amount of drugs." Mr. Bates took a deep breath and paused. As though he recalled the brutal scene himself. After a while, he shook his head and said, "Then, Master Aaron pushed Marina into the sea in front of Master. She fell into a vortex of water. By the time the rescue crew arrived, there was no way they could find her."
"After all that happened to Marina, there was no way she can still be alive. Yet for the past ten years, the Master looked for her constantly." Mr. Bates paused and asked," Mrs. Yates, what kind of feelings do you think Master had for Marina?"
"He loved her," she said. After this, she realized that she was in tears. The more she knew about Stuart’s past, the more she understood the importance of Marina to him. She died a tragic, painful death, and Stuart may never be able to forget her.
Edie started to cry and said, "How can I compete with someone who is dead?"
Mr. Bates looked at Edie and could see the anguish in her eyes. He smiled and said, "I’ve been with Master since he was a child. I know him like a father would know his son. Although he has a cold personality, he is a very kind man. If he hadn’t let go of Miss Daisy in his heart, he wouldn’t have married you. You’re special to Master! Ever since the first time he saw you, you have slowly changed him. Mrs. Yates, can’t you see how much he loves you?"
After a moment of silence, Edie took a deep breath and said, "Mr. Bates, actually, I don’t mind Stuart having an ex-girlfriend. Everyone has their own past, including myself, I can’t blame him for that. What I can’t accept is no matter how many times I asked him, he would never tell me the truth. He kept everything from me and lied to me. I’m his wife, aren’t we supposed to treat each other with honesty?"
"Mrs. Yates, now that you know what happened ten years ago, is the burden taken off of your heart?" said Mr. Bates.
Edie was speechless, and she tried to rein in her scattered thoughts and said, "No, it doesn’t take the burden off my heart. Now it is only worse. I feel as though I am being suffocated with all of these lies. Because of that, I don’t think I can look at Stuart the same way as I did."
Mr. Bates said, "This is the reason why the Master kept the truth from you. The incident was not only cruel to him but also hurt his dignity. He concealed the truth from you because he was afraid of you leaving him. Master worried that you might leave him once you found out the truth. He seems strong on the outside, but his heart can be easily broken."
"Seeing you hurt, Master lost his mind and injured Master Aaron, and he nearly killed him." Mr. Bates said, sounding concerned. freewebnøvel.coɱ
"He went to Aaron?" Edie was surprised, and she didn’t expect Stuart would be so impulsive.
Mr. Bates sighed and said, "Now you understand how important you are to him? I’ll be honest with you, Master is thinking of a divorce. He’s afraid that if you are around him, you will be in danger. Your injury was serious, and it had a big impact on him."
Edie widened her eyes and gazed at Mr. Bates in disbelief.
"Stuart... wants to divorce..." Edie was astounded. This was what she asked him for, but why did it feel like a hole was being punched through her heart.
Mr. Bates asked, "Mrs. Yates, do you really want a divorce?"
"I..." When Edie was just about to respond, the doorknob turned. The door was opened, and a familiar figure appeared.
