Chapter 44: Betrayer

Vyral activated [Thrust] once again, leaving gaping, bloodied holes in the Kobolds’ chests. He glanced at the others and charged at them, ruthlessly slaughtering each monster.

Deafening, sorrowful roars echoed through the dungeon as Vyral executed them.

The horde of Kobolds had no idea why Vyral was still capable of fighting after enduring the Rabid Wolves’ assault. As a result, a wave of fear began to take root in their minds.

Their hesitation eventually turned into retreat.

Actually, Vyral didn’t have enough mana to use [Mana Muscles Burst] again, so he stopped right there. He wasn’t stupid enough to chase after them in his current condition.

The best option was to rest, recover his mana, and find the others. With the support of his fellow adventurers, clearing the dungeon would be much easier.

That explained why guilds existed to clear dungeons. Working as a group was always necessary.

He sighed and found a suitable spot to rest. Then, he summoned the system screen. He was curious to see whether he had reached Lv.4 or not.

Vyral rubbed his hands in delight.

"I’m almost there."

Ten minutes later, Vyral stood up and continued forward.

"There must be stairs leading to the next floor."

Since he had fallen down here, this place was probably part of the dungeon’s basement. During this time, he also tried to find traces of the others, but it was useless. He couldn’t find anyone. Therefore, he came to a conclusion: only a few unfortunate individuals, like himself, had fallen into this basement.

And there was still one big question left.

What the hell were those shadowy figures that had stabbed the guild members?

A trap?

Vyral was highly suspicious, but he eventually just shrugged and continued onward.

A few minutes later, Vyral found a staircase, just as he had expected. Soon, he returned to the dungeon’s first floor.

"There’s a trail of blood."

Vyral ran over and examined it. The blood was still fresh, so it had to belong to the guild members.

He nodded to himself and followed the trail across the floor. Before long, he heard chaotic noises ahead.

A group of humans was facing off against a pack of Kobolds.

Without a second thought, Vyral charged at the monsters. He unleashed a series of skills upon them.

Vyral drove his sword through a monster’s chest before cleaving it apart with a downward slash.

Caught off guard by a stranger who had appeared out of nowhere, the Kobolds lost their composure for a moment.

Their formation became chaotic, losing its original flexibility and stability.

Of course, Vyral didn’t let this opportunity slip away.

The guild members quickly realized what was happening and increased the pressure on the monsters.

With the support of the guild members, Vyral was able to easily overpower the horde of monsters. He continued slaughtering them until a familiar sound rang out, congratulating him on leveling up.

Vyral stopped right there, feeling the newfound power coursing through his body, ignoring the fleeing Kobolds.

There was no need for him to chase after them at this moment. He would leave the remaining monsters to the guild members. After all, they still needed XP just like he did.

After dealing with the monsters, one of the guild members stepped forward and spoke with a grateful voice.

"Thank you for saving us."

Vyral nodded. Then he asked,

"So, where are the others?"

He glanced around, only seeing some Lv.2–3 NPCs, which meant they weren’t core members of the group. Aside from that, he didn’t see Arthea or Doran anywhere.

The Lv.2 man sighed and began to explain.

After the corridor floor had collapsed, the large group had been split apart. They had no idea where everyone had ended up because the situation had been extremely chaotic.

Each person had been focused on their own survival. By the time they thought about the others, they had already disappeared.

Vyral sighed.

"So, do you know the guy who stabbed one of us back then?"

The group’s faces immediately turned sour. One of them spoke up.

"It’s one of us. Orson."

Vyral scratched the back of his head.

"So what’s the reason? Is he some kind of bad guy, or does he hate you?"

The NPC replied,

"No, quite the opposite. He’s a good guy. We see him as a little brother. Moreover, he only joined the guild a year ago. He came from a distant land, and none of us really know much about him."

His voice carried absolute certainty.

"So none of us have any hatred toward him, and he has none toward us either. We have no reason to kill each other."

Vyral couldn’t do anything but click his tongue in discomfort. If there was no real motive behind the murder, then this wouldn’t be a simple matter to handle.

What he feared the most was a murderer killing someone for no reason. There were three possibilities.

First, he was a cruel murderer who hid his true personality for perverted, sick reasons.

Second, he was an underling sent here for some reason he didn’t know—an assistant.

Finally, that fat bastard had some hidden hatred toward the guild that no one knew about.

Vyral sighed and discussed the NPCs.

"First, we need to clear the dungeon. It is our top priority. We will handle that betrayer when we have the chance."
