Chapter 111: Heart to Heart

"Is there anything you think I need to know, Captain Gene?"

Kain sat on the chair, legs crossed, leaning lazily. A finger tapped lightly on his knee. He observed the man’s disheveled appearance. Gene hadn’t had time to make himself more presentable before Kain came in.

Anyone seeing the scene might believe the owner of the room to be Kain and that Gene had done unspeakable things, only to have the owner come back at an inopportune time.

Regardless of how it appeared, Captain Gene was the owner of the room. He cleared his throat, ignoring Kain’s question.

"What brings you here?"

Kain raised an eyebrow but said nothing about the deflection.

"Are there any better rooms?"

He didn’t particularly care whether there were. But if there was a chance for an upgrade, he wouldn’t say no.

"Mr. Nightfall. We’re a barge, not a five-star hotel. The rooms for the crew are already taken. We’ve modified them just for you and your people. It’s a sign of our gratitude for everything that you have done." He sounded irritated.

"Well, thank you for extending your gratitude."

At this point, the captain was no longer disheveled. He continued the conversation as if he hadn’t heard the slight in Kain’s voice.

"I assume you and your people are settling in."

"Already settled, just checking some inventory."

"Well, I hope you all adapt quickly. If possible, you can help us take care of some things on board as well."

Kain hummed. "Should anyone be in danger, we don’t mind stepping in. But I have to say, Captain Gene, don’t you think there are too many people on the barge?"

The captain stiffened slightly.

"You can’t save everyone," Kain said simply.

A flickered past through the captain’s eyes. "You’re right, we can’t save everyone, but it doesn’t mean we can’t try."

Kain sat up straighter in his chair. "Captain, let’s be honest with each other. I have no intention of having my people save every person they see. As far as I see it, we are allies because it currently benefits us. If our interests do not align in the future, we would turn on each other just as quickly."

"Oh?" Gene raised an eyebrow. "How can you be so sure?"

"Because more than thirty minutes ago, you were fucking a venomous viper. If you can get in bed with that snake, I think you can do worse."

Hearing this, something akin to fury seemed to blaze in the captain’s eyes. He wasn’t embarrassed at being caught. The fury came from knowing that Jasmine was indeed a viper, but for what she offered, he didn’t care.

"Mr. Nightfall, there is no reason to resort to name-calling. I think we’re both adults here. There’s no need to refer to an innocent woman like that."

"Innocent?" Kain narrowed his eyes and let out a chuckle. "Looks like Captain Gene and I have different definitions of innocent." free𝑤ebnovel.com

Waving his hand, he dismissed the topic.

"I’m not here to talk about her. I only wanted to come to you and make sure we can get along on this long voyage. I’m informing you that if a situation comes up where I don’t agree with your methods or motives, I will not hesitate to go against you and this entire barge."

The captain ground his teeth. He didn’t enjoy the fact that Kain could steer the conversation like this. But gratitude is gratitude. If there was no reason for them to part ways, he wouldn’t do it. free𝑤ebnovel.com

He sighed, listening to Kain. "You would deviate even if it costs lives?"

"As long as the lives of my wife, children, and people are not in danger, I have no reason to care about anyone else."

Kain lowered his eyes. He noticed, from his peripheral, that someone was at the door. Had it not been for this, he knew within himself he wouldn’t have included the word ’people’.

Lifting his eyes to look at the captain, he continued, "I’ve said before, you can’t save everyone. In trying to save everyone, you might lose them."

The captain leaned back, palms pressed on the bed. He let out a breath.

"Do you know what I think your problem is?"

"Problem?" Kain lifted an eyebrow.

Gene nodded. "You think people are resources to be farmed. You say you would protect your people, but who can guarantee that?"

Smiling, Kain said, "As long as they listen, they can live a long life. As long as they become stronger, they won’t need me to guarantee their lives; they can do it themselves. Whether they are resources or not, they know how I treat them."

"Expected of a leader. A lot of inspirational quotes with no real substance."

Kain shrugged. "If that’s how you see it."

The captain shook his head. "Well, I don’t think we have anything else to say to each other. Let’s stop here and agree to disagree before things become too heated. For now, we remain allies. And I hope that never changes."

They both stood. The captain held out his hand. Kain looked down at it.

"Did you wash that before I came in?"

Captain Gene knew what Kain was referring to. He coughed, pulling his hand back.

Kain walked out, wishing the captain a good rest of the day.

Just as his hand touched the handle, he turned around and looked at the captain.

"The energy in your body is weak. I assume it’s because they taught you that you treat them well. You should meditate more to stabilize it."

The door closed, and the captain was left speechless. It was beyond his expectations that Kain would see it. But meditation?

According to Jasmine and Chad, vigorous exercise is the best way to stimulate the energy into his body. If meditation worked, then why did he need to have sex with her?

He didn’t quite believe Kain. Even if he did know about the energy and could somehow see it, that didn’t mean his method was correct. He could obviously feel the flow of energy in his body.

He thought briefly about what the three of them did, and he thought about Jasmine’s mouth. His shaft couldn’t help but twitch.

He shook his head. For the rest of the day the captain alternated between thinking about vigorous exercise and meditating. It wasn’t until late in the night that he decided to try meditating.

The volume of energy he received from meditating was so much that he was temporarily shocked.

As for sex with Jasmine, it didn’t matter; he wouldn’t mind doing it a few more times. He could have it both ways.
