Chapter 110: First day

"You really left them in there?" Amelia asked.

She, Kain, and the others were now on the barge. They stood outside, giving the place they had lived in for so many months one last look.

A once-proud building standing more than 800 metres tall has been reduced to five floors, and even then, one floor was submerged. Its beauty could still be seen from the outside.

The group of 18 watched as they moved further and further away.

"They won’t be able to stay for much longer," Kain replied.

And he was right. As soon as the barge turned a corner, the people who had been fiddling with the elevator suddenly felt a sense of weightlessness.

They had been frustrated when they learned they couldn’t visit any other floors aside from Floor One, when a sudden sense of weightlessness wrapped around them.

They hadn’t had time to process it when they felt themselves falling.

Plunging into icy waters wasn’t exactly their idea of a good time, but they had no choice. Sputtering and flailing, they managed to swim to the surface.

"What the hell just happened?" Dillon roared, still choking on water

"We’re, we’re outside," Hannah murmured in disbelief.

The seven look around, still completely unable to come to terms with the fact that the sanctuary they had secured for themselves was gone.

Of course, Kain wasn’t completely cruel. The food they claimed was also floating nearby. All they needed to do was find a new place to live. As for how to survive, it was no longer his concern.

While the seven were taking swimming lessons, Kain and the others were looking at their new living quarters.

"This was not what I expected." Kain’s brows were knitted.

He looked at the row of containers. He hadn’t expected luxury, but were these the best the barge had? Still, he wouldn’t complain. They could do this, which shows they are thinking long-term.

Before them stood a row of modified containers; the interior walls had been removed, support beams were added, and simple lighting illuminated the space.

This specific section of containers had been cordoned off, whether it was intentional or not, it gave a sense of isolation.

The containers were by no means luxurious. It was a massive downgrade from what they were used to. There were a few bunks, storage lockers, tables, and chairs. It was enough to live in. Not luxurious, just practical.

"There are five container rooms. Amelia, the children, and I will take one. The rest can be divided among the rest of you. If possible, split the food among the four other bunkers; that way they won’t take up too much space."

The division happened quickly. The single men, Marcus, Ian, Jon, and Vincent, were in one container. Verdana, Claire, Jaylin, and Paige were in another, much to Verdana’s dismay. Jake and Veronica took one, and Julian, Gertie, and Hayley shared the other.

Verdana and Claire glanced at each other. They shook their heads, looking over at Jaylin and Paige, who were already snuggled up together.

They could imagine all the sounds they might end up hearing in that room.

Most of the food was piled in Jake and Veronica’s container.

According to Marcus, they had the least number of people, so they should bear the burden. Plus, Jake was already in charge of logistics; it made sense.

An hour passed as they fixed up the living area. When everything was sorted, they met in Kain and Amelia’s area for a meeting.

"Alright, let’s have a quick talk." Kain began. "We are no longer in our comfortable sanctuary. It’s not about going hunting to build fighting prowess. We are now in unfamiliar territory.

As a collective, we are Nightfall. We need to stand together. We are a unit, which means we rely on each other. Watch each other’s backs, communicate clearly, and share information quickly.

There are no allies here. People will probe and prompt in an attempt to split us apart. Whether you believe what I say or not, remember to stay alert. In all of this, even with the fact that we have been hunting, we could be considered greenhouse flowers compared to what is actually out there.

During this time, take note of how people react and what they say. You’ll definitely have some new insights about your experience thus far."

His gaze swept over the people before him. He would watch and see how much and how long they could endure.

"We still have the rest of the day. Everyone can deal with their own things. I will go and find Captain Gene."

He dismissed everyone and allowed them to look around at their own pace.

Leisurely, he walked to the captain’s quarters at the rear of the ship. Before he could even knock, he heard the sounds coming from inside. The sounds weren’t unfamiliar to him.

Kain remembered the last time they came to the barge. They seemed to have ruined the captain’s ’good thing’. Kain decided to wait a bit. He casually leaned against the pole close by, closed his eyes, and began to meditate. ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com

Even if the amount is minuscule compared to before, something is better than nothing.

Half an hour passed unknowingly with Kain immersed in meditation. Only when he heard the door opening did he stop.

Seeing the people coming out of the room, Kain wondered whether his luck was good or bad. Good because he got to see something interesting. Or bad because of who was coming out of the captain’s room.

Whichever it was, Kain didn’t dwell on it.

Jasmine and Chad passed Kain. Both were flushed, having released their frustrations, they stepped out lazily, only to tense up when they saw Kain.

Anger flashed through Jasmine’s eyes so quickly that Kain almost missed it. Chad, on the other hand, didn’t hide his disdain for Kain.

He didn’t close the door when he went in. He didn’t feel the need to be locked in a room full of the scent of sex and sweat.

"So, captain, looks like there’s a lot we need to talk about."

Finding a wet wipe, Kain used it to disinfect a chair. It didn’t matter if nothing happened on the chair; he refused to sit on it without wiping it down.
