Chapter 34: The Culprit
Chloe seriously couldn’t fathom this new sibling she obtained. freewёbnoνel.com
If her brain juice were any lesser, then she would have really been fooled by his nonchalant and unruly behavior.
’Since he remained motionless in the town, there was definitely a culprit nearby.’ Chloe also refused to believe something like a coincidence.
They had just arrived in town, and somehow, the monster tide that had receded decided to return to the town.
Does that make any sense?
"The rest of you continue to fend off the monsters." Without a breakthrough, Chloe narrowed her eyes and decided to enter deep into the territory.
"But commander—" A soldier nearby wanted to warn her of the danger.
However, when he saw the piercing cold eyes from Chloe, he swallowed whatever words he wanted to say back inside.
She didn’t even bother speaking any further and blinked away from the scene.
"Hah... the Commander is scary as usual." The soldier wiped off the sweat on his forehead. Maybe because it was the misconception caused by Ray, but some of them thought Chloe was really going to behave mildly.
After all, she didn’t throw a fit or flash her cold daggers-like eyes at Ray when he made unreasonable commands back to back.
Nevertheless, the soldier shook his head and didn’t ponder further. The monsters were still relentless, and he needed to concentrate on the battle.
"Do your best to safeguard yourself. It’s fine to let a few pass through because Lady Jeanette has put up a firewall." The soldier returned to the battle and relayed the news.
With the newfound information that they didn’t need to be adamant in securing the perimeter, the soldiers’ mentality relaxed a bit.
Despite this, injuries were bound to occur anyway.
In a battle of endurance, the soldiers’ stamina wasn’t unlimited. Soon, soldiers began to lose their focus and concentration.
SLASH!
Blood splattered across the ground, and the soldiers who had lost the majority of their stamina were finally losing their advantage.
The monsters, relentless in their pursuit, went into a frenzy once they sniffed human blood. Their eyes glowed crimson as they howled in excitement.
"R-Retreat!" When the soldiers realized they could no longer afford to remain in the perimeter, they had to sound the alarm to move back to the firewall.
A small, narrow passage within the firewall was opened up for the soldiers to retreat.
But not every soldier was fortunate enough to escape.
Some who were too far in front or understood that not all could escape in time chose to stand their ground and fight till the end.
"Go and tell my family that I didn’t die a coward." A fellow soldier who chose to remain smiled warmly at his comrade.
"Damn it, why do you get the cool line?" The comrade bit his lips.
They suppressed their emotions and made a light teasing remark.
To them, anything other than this was considered an insult.
Time was ticking down, so there was no chance for them to even spare a second to bid farewell properly.
The soldier who stayed behind was relieved when their comrade managed to escape.
"Goodbye—" The soldier was soon swarmed by the monsters and could no longer be seen.
In the meantime, his comrade could only turn a deaf ear to munching and crunching sounds.
However, there was not a single scream echoing. The soldier’s bravery and sacrifice remained evident in their resolution. The kind of determination that wouldn’t falter or hesitate to become the unspoken heroes.
Far away from the battlefield, Ray softly asked Belva. "Belva, you have a list of the soldiers’ names, right?"
"Yes," Belva nodded.
"Have a roll call once the event is over." Ray’s eyes gradually shifted to the side of the battle. Despite not being able to see the situation, he could tell that many had already lost their lives.
"The soldiers who died in battle are to be commended and have their families well taken care of. They died for the Carrion Household and should be acknowledged for their merits."
Unlike the guards who blocked his entry when he first arrived at the household, these soldiers were fighting to protect the people.
This was a major difference from those guards who cared about their interests as opposed to these soldiers who cared about others’ interests.
He was aloof and lazy, but that didn’t mean he was an emotionless bastard.
It was just that he was able to mask it well. After all, a rogue reader like him, who had read a lot of novels, had seen how authors write mass murder or killing in a few words.
They were tools used to evoke the emotional aspect of the readers and bait them into being invested.
Of course, knowing and understanding it were two different things.
He knew about these sly methods but still fell for them each time because he was invested in the characters. A prominent author could easily toy with their readers’ emotions, and he was one of those who fell for the stinkiest trap.
Meanwhile, Belva was visibly surprised by Ray’s action. ’He’s actually concerned for the soldiers’ lives?’
Who didn’t know the outcome that would occur when he refused to send any assistance to Chloe’s side?
Any soldier who came out alive could be considered a blessing for them.
Besides, he didn’t receive any opposition because the soldiers who didn’t follow Chloe would be safe and sound within Moonrock Town. Had they also been deployed, the chances of them losing their lives were high.
Half an hour later, the soldiers who followed Chloe returned to the town in shambles.
As for Jeanette, she was nearly drained of her mana from maintaining the firewall.
PLOP!
And just when things were getting drastic, Chloe came back while tossing a figure down to the ground.
"This is the culprit behind the monster tide here." She coolly said.
Upon closer inspection, the figure was a woman dressed in some fancy clothes.
"Whoa, she can be a seductress," Ray exclaimed loudly, his eyes wandering at the culprit’s long legs dressed in black pantyhose.
"A pretty woman like her is the culprit? That can’t be it!"
