Chapter 75: Come Back With Me
Michael pinched the area between his eyebrows.
In an impatient tone, he said, "Yvonne, I hope that you won’t do such childish things again in the future. Just focus on getting better in the hospital. I’ll send someone to take care of you."
"But, Michael, I..."
"That’ll be all."
Yvonne felt incredulous when she heard the beeping sound over the phone. She thought, did he really just hang up on me? I literally just attempted suicide and I’m still in the hospital right now, how can Michael be so unsympathetic toward me?
Feeling indignant, she tried calling him again. However, he did not even bother answering this time. When she tried for the third time, his phone was turned off. Her chest rose unevenly as her hands curled into fists. The moment she exerted force into it, the wound on her wrist started splitting again. It caused her so much pain that she gritted her teeth.
This time, she dialed Christian’s number, "Your method isn’t proving to be that effective either. Even though Michael did come and send me to the hospital last night, he left before I even regained consciousness. I think he’s probably with Wendy right now. If this goes on, I still won’t be able to win him back." Her tone was laced with harshness and displeasure.
She thought, I can’t believe that I thought Christian’s method Would work. Now, it seems just as ineffective.
Christian had already guessed this outcome. Since Yvonne was just like a decorative accessory in Michael’s eyes, he was no longer attracted to her at all. To Christian, being able to bait Michael into abandoning Wendy at the party last night was already considered a success.
He sat on his chair, twirling his pen in his hand. His tone was breezy as he said, "Why are you in such a rush? Do you want to attempt suicide one more time to try and win him back?"
"Is that what I should do next? Should I threaten him with another suicide attempt?" Yvonne asked him anxiously.
Yvonne’s stupidity shocked Christian once again. "That might have worked the first time, but do you think it will still work if you try it again?" Christian said, "Just stay in the hospital. I’ll take care of the rest. I’ll contact you again when I need you." With that, he hung up.
When Yvonne heard the familiar beeping sound again, she became so frustrated that she felt like she was on the verge of exploding.
...
After Michael arrived at the office, the first thing he did was go to the vice-president’s office.
When he saw Christian sitting in his chair and sipping coffee leisurely, he grabbed his half-brother’s collar and punched him in the face.
This time, Christian resisted the attack. He stretched out his hand to wipe the blood off the corner of his mouth. Then, his gaze darkened, and he raised his hand to punch Michael back.
This was the first time that Christian had retaliated. In the past, he always allowed Michael to hit him as much as he wanted. Of course, his inaction in the past was not because he was afraid of Michael. Rather, he just wanted other people to see how violent and domineering his older brother was.
Christian took one step back and distanced himself from Michael. A sly smile surfaced on his lips as he said, "Michael, I was expecting this from you. l assume that you have already gone to see Wendy, and you know just how immensely disappointed she is in you. Oh, and I’m sure that she has also already seen those news articles about her on the internet, right?"
"Are you the one behind those articles?" Michael asked sternly.
"Michael, what are you talking about? Do you really think I have enough influence in this city to do that? That only happened because you didn’t handle this entire situation well. You gave the reporters the impression that you don’t even love Wendy and that you wanted to humiliate her. They probably thought that they were doing you a favor."
Christian’s words made Michael want to punch him again. Michael clenched his fists. He warned Christian, "Don’t you dare get any funny ideas about Wendy. Otherwise, I let you know what it means to live a life that feels more miserable than death."
"There are all kinds of things in this world that scare me, but being threatened is not one of them," Christian replied calmly. "The truth is, I did not plan on doing anything to Wendy in the first place. But after listening to you, I think l must." freēwēbηovel.c૦m
"You’re asking for it!" Michael had always been bad-tempered. There was no way that he could have withstood Christian’s provocation. In the next second, he punched Christian in the face once again. Christian, on the other hand, refused to become a punching bag for Michael.
Hence, the vice-president’s office instantly transformed into a battlefield between the two men.
...
Wendy thought about many things during her stay alone in the hotel. In the end, she had figured out most of it. Judging from how things seemed right now, it was unlikely for Michael to agree to a divorce. And it was not possible for her to continue staying in the hotel in the long run. After all, she had already been pregnant for over four months. If she continued staying in Lake City, Michael would find out about it sooner or later. Right now, she did not want Michael to know. Ultimately, she made the decision to leave Lake City.
In the past two months, Wendy had earned a lot from working at the company. After deducing her expenses, she still had tens of thousands of dollars left in savings. She figured that she could find another job after leaving Lake City. freewёbn૦νeɭ.com
Then, she would deliver her child safely. This plan felt foolproof. After making up her mind, she bought a train ticket online. Since she did not know where she should go, she chose a destination at random. She needed to get out of Lake City before Michael managed to put two and two together.
She ended up buying a ticket that was scheduled to leave almost immediately. After packing her suitcase, she checked out of the hotel and took a cab to the train station. The truth was that she felt rather reluctant to leave Lake City, where she had lived for many years.
She touched her belly and told herself that leaving this place was the best decision she could make for both herself and her child.
Unbeknownst to Wendy, someone was watching her every move and called Mr. York the moment she checked out of the hotel. When Mr. York received that tip-off, he immediately informed Michael about it.
"Find out what she intends to do next," said Michael.
Mr. York instantly discovered that Wendy had purchased a train ticket. He said, "Miss Stewart bought a train ticket half an hour ago, and she’s scheduled to leave at 11:35 A.M. It appears that she has only just now made this decision."
Michael knew that he must have disappointed Wendy completely for her to want to leave the city. Regardless, he would not let her go. "I’m going to the train station right now," said Michael without hesitation as he grabbed his car keys and jogged out of his office.
After arriving at the train station, Wendy collected her train ticket from the counter. She looked at the time and saw that there were still almost twenty minutes before her scheduled departure. Since the train ticket inspection usually occurred about ten minutes in advance, she decided that she would just proceed to the boarding area now.
She was about to board a train that would take her out of Lake City and away from Michael. She could not relax at all, but that did not matter. She was certain that as long as she could leave this place, she would be able to slowly forget everything about Lake City, including Michael.
After arriving at the boarding area, she waited quietly for the ticket inspection.
At long last, a boarding announcement rang out in the station to alert the passengers. Wendy joined the line and waited for her turn. After the ticket inspection was done, she got on the train and found her seat. She gazed at the scenery outside the window and found it bleak, much like her heart now.
Shutting her eyes, she told herself, "Goodbye, Lake City. Goodbye, Michael.."
The minutes and seconds ticked by, but the train did not start moving.
"What’s going on? Why isn’t the train moving?"
"Yeah, exactly. It’s scheduled to depart at 11:35 A.M., but it’s already ten minutes past that."
"We finished the ticket inspection on time and the train also arrived at the platform promptly. What’s happening?"
"It’s been delayed for over ten minutes, is there a problem with the train?"
The passengers on the train started complaining about the delay. Wendy frowned, feeling something was amiss. Delays like this rarely happened for trains on the high-speed rail. Since the ticket inspection was completed on time, there was no reason for the train to still be at the platform. Standing up, Wendy looked toward the front of the train. However, she did not see any train conductor coming out to explain the situation, and neither was there an attempt to announce this delay.
Suddenly, she had a bad feeling...
Wendy stood there anxiously as she looked around. She prayed that things were not as she suspected. After some time, a group of people got on the train. The initially noisy chatter in her carriage instantly quieted.
She gazed at the people who had just entered and saw that they were all dressed in formal suits. That was the standard attire for Michael’s bodyguards. Wendy swallowed dryly.
She never expected that Michael would resort to stopping the entire train. But then again, how could she have forgotten that he once stopped an entire subway line because of her?
At this moment, she had only one thought in her mind, and that was that she did not want to get caught.
If Michael successfully stopped her from leaving this time, it would become impossible for her to leave Lake City again, given his influence here. With that in mind, Wendy did not even retrieve her suitcase as she walked through the crowded train, her head lowered, into another train car.
For a moment, it seemed like she was going to make it. However, just when she reached the end of this car, a man dressed in a suit blocked her path. She said, "Please excuse me... "
The man did not move.
Wendy could not help but look up. Just as she had expected, she found herself staring at the one person she did not want to see right now... It was Michael.
His face was bruised, but Wendy did not want to care about him anymore. She swallowed dryly, not knowing how she should react. She felt like a fugitive who was trying to escape from prison, only to end up getting stopped halfway.
"Wendy..." Michael looked at her with apologetic eyes. He knew he should not have abused his power and brought so many people here to stop her from leaving. However, he could not just sit back and watch Wendy leave Lake City. He could not let her leave him like that. His gaze remained fixated on her.
Sighing, he said in an equally apologetic tone, "Please come back with me."
Wendy turned around, wanting to run in the other direction. Unfortunately, one of his bodyguards was standing behind her, blocking her escape route.
The passengers in the car started chatting among themselves as this scene unfolded.
"What exactly is going on here?"
"Is this the reason why the train hasn’t departed?"
"That man looks quite familiar, and so does that woman."
"I think that’s Mr. Michael Lucas and his wife. Did you guys see the news last night?"
"I’m certain that’s Mr. Michael Lucas. Who else has the ability to delay the train like that?"
There was no way that Wendy could run away anymore. Moreover, the crowd had already started to recognize them. Michael offered his hand, hoping Wendy would take it. He said, "Come back with me."
His words sounded like a joke to Wendy. She reached out and pushed Michael away forcefully. Even if she could not get away from him, she wanted to walk by herself.
Leading the way, she got out of the train and walked ahead of him. Even though she did not look back, she knew very well that Michael was following right behind her with his numerous bodyguards.
She wondered, what is the likelihood of me getting away now if I suddenly start running?
Unfortunately, she figured out that it was virtually impossible. Moreover, she was pregnant. She could not afford for anything to go wrong. Lips pursed and face sullen, Wendy felt Outraged.
Michael, on the other hand, followed behind her at a leisurely pace. After she left the train station, someone drove up to them immediately.
The car slowly pulled to a stop beside Wendy. Michael pulled open the door for her. In a low and pleading voice, he said, "Wendy, get in the car."
Right now, Wendy had no other choice but to Obey.
Observing Wendy’s willingness to cooperate Michael sighed in relief and entered the car after her.
