Chapter 74: Get Out!
Zen walked over to the door, opened it, and immediately gestured at Michael to be quiet, "Wendy is asleep, don’t wake her." She was afraid that Wendy would not be able to fall back asleep for the entire night if he ended up disturbing her.
Michael tried looking in, but he could not see the bed. He lifted his foot, wanting to enter the room.
Zen stretched her arm out to stop him. She said, "Mr. Lucas, I know that it might not be my place to say this, but I must. I hope that you can think things through before you step into this room. The incident tonight hurt Wendy too deeply, and if you do not intend to wholeheartedly choose her over Yvonne and treat her well, then I beg you not to go in and disturb her."
"What happened today was just an accident. Don’t worry, Wendy is the only person that I love," said Michael. Then, as if suddenly having recalled something, he frowned lightly and continued, "Didn’t you tell me that you don’t know where Wendy was?"
Zen just coughed softly. She looked anywhere but at Michael. Laughing awkwardly, she replied, "I just found out as well. I didn’t have enough time to inform you yet."
Michael did not make things difficult for her. It did not take much to figure out that Wendy had probably stopped Zen from revealing her whereabouts to him.
"Thank you for taking care of Wendy. You can go back now, I’ll take care of her" said Michael. His meaning was clear-he was chasing Zen out even when he was the guest here.
Even though Zen was worried about Wendy, she could not disobey Michael’s direct instructions. However, before she left, she specifically reminded him, "Don’t wake her up. Let her have a good sleep tonight."
Michael nodded.
After Zen’s departure, Michael walked into the room as quietly as he could. He felt heartbroken when he saw Wendy’s tear-streaked face. He reached out to wipe her face, but before he could, she let out a soft cry.
Shocked by that noise, he immediately retracted his hand. Then, he removed his coat and lay down beside Wendy. He reached out and wrapped his arm around her waist, whispering softly into her ear, "I’m sorry, Wendy." This was an apology that he owed her.
Wendy was in a deep sleep. She had a nightmare. In it, she was getting married to Michael. It should have been a joyous occasion, but Yvonne suddenly showed up in a wedding dress and tried to disrupt their wedding. In response, Michael not only chose Yvonne over her, but he also insulted her for being a shameless third party in their relationship.
Suddenly, everyone there started mocking Wendy. "I’m not the third party, I’m not, I’m not..."
Beads of perspiration formed across Wendy’s forehead as she was abruptly aroused from her sleep.
"What’s wrong, Wendy?" A familiar voice rang out beside her ear. She turned her head only to see Michael’s very attractive face.
Unfortunately, it was a face that she did not wish to see.
"What are you doing here?" Wendy immediately got out of bed, keeping her distance from Michael. She said, "You should be keeping Yvonne company in the hospital. What are you doing here? Get out! Get out right now!"
"Wendy, don’t get agitated.." Seeing Wendy’s dramatic reaction, Michael said, "I know that I’m at fault for what happened at the party. I went straight home to find you after I sent Yvonne to the hospital, but you were not there, and I managed to track down your location. I know that right now you probably hate me very much, but please believe me, I only went to Yvonne because she slit her wrist. If I didn’t do that, she Would have bled to death."
"Hah..." Wendy snorted coldly, "She slit her wrist?"
Michael nodded. This time, Wendy sneered, "What if she uses the same trick again next time? Will you still leave me behind and go to her without hesitation?"
"No, Wendy, I..."
Before Michael could finish speaking, Wendy’s emotions were stirred again. She said, "Why are you here for me now? Oh, I got it. You found out that I left the party with Christian, and you’re here to make sure that nothing is going on."
This was Wendy’s first time losing all composure in front of Michael. She initially thought that she could face this matter calmly.
After all, she had spent the last few years in a similar fashion. However, it was Michael’s fault for giving her a taste of his love before abandoning her mercilessly this time. If he was going to do this, he might as well have not given her false hope from the start. The disappointment that followed was the cruelest.
"Don’t be like that, Wendy," Michael approached her to hold her, but he was met with great resistance from Wendy, as she stepped back every time he stepped forward.
They went on like this for a while. At last, Michael could only remain standing where he was.
"Don’t be like that? What’s wrong with how I’m behaving now?" Wendy asked. Michael’s words turned the situation around and made it sound like she was the one making a fuss for no good reason. She shut her eyes and willed herself to not cry. Michael was no longer worthy of her tears.
"I’m sorry, it’s my fault, I shouldn’t have said that," said Michael, proving himself adaptable to evolving circumstances as he immediately admitted his mistake. "But please believe me, I will never abandon you again."
Wendy shook her head with a smile, "I will never believe you again. If you genuinely cared about me at all and wanted to be good to me, you wouldn’t have left me behind like that. Now, all the entertainment news sites in Lake City are publishing articles about what happened at the party. I have become a big fat joke in this city. Are you satisfied now, Michael?"
"I did not know about that," said Michael. When he saw the disappointment in Wendy’s eyes even though she was smiling, he suddenly felt afraid. He rushed up to her, grabbed her hand, and tried his best to explain, "After I sent Yvonne to the hospital, I immediately went back to look for you. I didn’t check the news at all."
"Yes, you’re right. You were so busy taking care of Yvonne, of course, you didn’t care about what was happening to me" said Wendy. She summoned all her strength to push Michael away, but it proved futile. Exhausted, she stopped trying.
"I didn’t do it on purpose. I’ll make them take down all the articles right now," said Michael. He took out his phone and looked for Mr. York’s contact number.
Wendy simply watched his actions indifferently. She said, "Stop acting, it’s meaningless."
"Wendy, I’m not acting. What must I do for you to believe me?" Michael knew that his explanations were weak and useless, and he also knew that he had hurt Wendy very deeply. He really wanted to make it up to her.
"I will never believe you again no matter what you do," said Wendy as she looked into Michael’s eyes. She shook her head slowly.
Her tone was filled with doubt and disappointment as she continued, "Michael, if you really do care about me, you wouldn’t have left me behind at the party. You said that you only left because Yvonne slit her wrist? Even if that was true, couldn’t you have just asked someone else to send her to the hospital? Why did you choose to abandon me in such a public setting? And even when you left, was it that difficult for you to make sure that this incident did not surface on the internet? But you didn’t do any of that. You just left."
"You’re right, I forgot to do that. But you don’t have to worry about it. I’ll organize another party, and no matter what the media is saying about you now, I can turn the tide of public opinion right back around."
What had happened at the party was an urgent situation. Since Yvonne was obviously threatening Michael back then, he had been afraid that she would really end up dying if he did not personally show up at her door.
"That’s not necessary," Wendy rejected his suggestions without hesitation. She said coldly, "Michael, let’s get divorced." Getting a divorce was the best outcome for them. Wendy had thoroughly lost all hope in this marriage.
"No way," Michael’s voice grew determined as he shook his head. "I will never agree to get divorced."
"Ha ha..." Wendy laughed in anger, "Are you trying to get the best of both worlds? Or are you just afraid that I’ll end up with your brother after our divorce?"
"Wendy, you know that’s not what I meant."
"I don’t know that!" Wendy interrupted him sharply. Pointing at the door, she said, "Get out! Come back and see me when you’re willing to agree to a divorce!"
When Michael simply stood there without moving, Wendy reached out to push him.
Unable to move him, she started pounding his chest with her fists forcefully. She said, "Get out of here! I don’t want to see you anymore!"
Michael pulled her into his arms, trapping her in his tight embrace. He said, "Wendy, I will never agree to get divorced. In this life, you can only be my wife."
Those words pushed Wendy’s anger to reach its peak. She opened her mouth and bit down hard on Michael’s shoulder. She used so much force that her gums started hurting. However, Michael held the pain in stubbornly without making a single sound.
Wendy’s lips were stained with blood. She did not have any strength left to continue biting him.
Her voice was also much softer when she said, "Michael, if you really refuse, I’ll just leave." With that, she tried pushing Michael away again, only to realize that he was like a rock that simply could not be moved. She was no longer as agitated as she had been just before.
Calmly, she said, "Unless you keep me locked up my entire life and guard me 24 hours a day, I’ll be able to find a chance to leave."
Michael took a deep breath, suddenly feeling a little weak. If someone had to leave right now, it would be better for him too. At least he knew that he could just come back here to visit her later. ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com
He planned on doing that after giving her a bit more time to calm down.
Releasing his grip on her, he said, "Alright, I’ll leave now. I’ll come back to see you later."
After Michael’s departure, Wendy felt like all the strength in her body had been drained. She fell to the ground. He had managed to locate her in this hotel within just one night. She knew that there was no hiding from him in Lake City. And if Michael was really unwilling to get divorced, she Would always remain under his control for as long as he wanted. When this thought crossed her mind, she felt desperate.
She thought, it was Michael who wanted to get divorced in the first place. If he still can’t bring himself to let go of Yvonne, why won’t he just agree to spare me from this agony?
After leaving the hotel, Michael immediately called Mr. York. His voice was filled with fury, "Why didn’t you make sure that what happened at the party stayed out of the media?"
Mr. York felt slightly indignant. He replied, "You did not instruct me to do that, and when I called you, you did not answer."
It was true that Mr. York had tried calling Michael when that happened. However, Michael had been too busy looking for Wendy.
"Then, why didn’t you tell me about it when l asked you to track Wendy’s location?"
"I wanted to, but you hung up before giving me time to say anything else. I assumed that you already knew about it and just did not feel like dealing with it at the moment."
"You’ve spent so many years with me, and they’ve all been for nothing!" Michael yelled.
"Report to the finance department in the company tomorrow and request for half of your salary this year to be deducted! Also, take down every single article about Wendy right now." He paused, and after thinking about what Wendy had said to him earlier, he continued, "And hire a few people to follow her secretly."
Mr. York felt like he was in deep trouble for something that was not even his fault in the first place. However, he did not dare to refute Michael. In the past, he always felt that Michael was too unsympathetic toward Wendy. He never expected such a drastic change in Michael’s personality when it came to anything involving Wendy now.
Mr. York took a moment to quietly mourn for himself before acting on Michael’s orders.
After hanging up on Mr. York, Michael received a call from Yvonne. She did not expect Michael to be gone when she regained consciousness.
It was true that she had passed out from blood loss while being sent to the hospital and had only just awakened. The moment the call went through, Yvonne immediately said, "Michael, I’m in so much pain right now, I can’t even move my arm. Can you please come to the hospital to see me?"
