Chapter 67: Wait For More Instructions
Yvonne was not surprised by Michael’s response. Ever since he fell in love with Wendy, his attitude toward her had changed drastically.
She knew that Michael was asking this of her because he did not want Wendy to develop any further misunderstandings about their relationship. But how could she accept this injustice? How could she simply sit back and watch the man she had stayed with for four years fall in love with another woman?
"Michael, must you really be so heartless?" Yvonne’s eyes grew damp with tears. "I have given everything that I have to you. Ever since I fell in love with you, I lost my sense of self. Without you, I can’t live. Michael, can you really bear to watch me lead a life that’s more miserable than death?"
"Yvonne, please don’t do this," said Michael sternly with a shake of his head as he tried to reason with her. "There’s no point trying to force this. You’re an adult, you should know that. Don’t forget, I promised you that I will make sure that you are taken care of for the rest of your life, and I’ll help you find a good man to marry"
"I don’t want any of that!" Yvonne grew agitated and slightly out of control. She said, "I’ll say this again: I only want you, and if you really don’t want me, then I won’t be able to go on living."
When Michael heard Yvonne emphasize on how much she could not live without him, he closed his eyes in frustration. "Yvonne, don’t force me," he sighed. In a completely helpless tone, he continued, "Don’t you understand? I cannot give you the love that you want."
"I don’t care." Yvonne shook her head as a crazed look filled her eyes, "I’ll wait for you at home tonight, I’ll cook all your favorite dishes, and if you don’t come... I... I ..." With that, she burst into tears. Only her voice had trembled at first, but as she spoke, she began to cry hysterically.
Michael reached out and patted her shoulder Just when he was about to comfort her, she grabbed his hand and said, "Michael, you still care about me, right?"
He withdrew his hand. He could hardly bear it as he gazed at the hopeful look on her face while she waited for his answer. However, he knew very well that if he did not clarify things with Yvonne right now and continued giving her false hope, it would only hurt her more in the end.
"Yvonne, I... " fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm
Noticing the expression on Michael’s face, Yvonne forcefully covered her ears, shook her head, and said, "I don’t want to hear it, I don’t want to!"
Michael had no choice but to give up. When Yvonne finally calmed down after some time, she said, "Michael, I’ll wait for you at home tonight."
"I have an important event to attend tonight, so don’t wait for me. I won’t be coming over," Michael firmly rejected her.
"I don’t care, you must come over tonight," said Yvonne. Then, as if she was afraid that Michael would reject her once again, she turned around and left immediately. As she walked away, she added, "I’ll wait for you."
Michael felt a headache sinking in. After all, he felt like he was indebted to Yvonne. He knew how much Yvonne loved him, and he also tried his best to return her feelings at the beginning.
But four years down the road, he realized that he did not have any romantic feelings for her whatsoever. He still intended to keep his promise and take care of her for the rest of her life, but he no longer wanted to pretend that he loved her. Right now, there was someone else that he genuinely wanted to love.
After leaving MC Enterprise, Yvonne sent Christian a short text message that said, "Everything went well."
Soon after, she received his reply, "Wait for more instructions."
After reading it, she deleted the message from her inbox. Now, she had all her hopes pinned on Christian. She hoped that he really could help her win Michael back.
She looked up at the sky and thought, the weather is so nice today and the skies are so blue. It’s such a pity that tonight is destined to be so tragic.
...
After Yvonne left, Michael went straight to Wendy. She was in the pantry.
"Wendy..." Michael called out her name as he walked into the kitchen.
Wendy had been absent-mindedly cutting some fruits. When she heard Michael’s voice, she lost focus and accidentally cut her finger with the knife. The pain made her cry out in pain.
"Be careful!" Michael strode forward and took her hand. When he saw the blood on her fingertip, he grew so anxious that he immediately put her finger in his mouth to stop the bleeding.
Wendy could not help her heart from beating faster when she felt the warmth of his mouth on her finger.
"Michael..." Wendy whispered hoarsely.
As Michael was still sucking on Wendy’s finger, he could only hum in response. He pulled her finger out of his mouth and was relieved to see that the blood had stopped. He said, "Where is the first-aid kit?"
Wendy retracted her hand. She shook her head, "I don’t need the first-aid kit. It’s just a small nick, it will heal soon."
"No way. Tell me where the first-aid kit is so I can put some ointment on your wound. You should at least put a Band-Aid on it."
Seeing how serious and anxious Michael was, Wendy went to grab the first-aid kit. Michael had never done this for anyone before. Even though the items in the first-aid kit were commonly used, confusion filled his face when he opened it and saw the contents. He did not know what he should start with.
Wendy could not help but chuckle softly when she saw him like this. She took out a bottle of disinfectant, opened it by herself, and wiped her cut with a cotton swab.
"I told you I’ll take care of it for you," said Michael as he watched Wendy wrap her own wound. He scratched his head, feeling disappointed in himself.
Wendy took out a Band-Aid and handed it to him. She said, "You can help me with this."
Michael took it immediately. At least he knew how to do this. After applying the Band-Aid around Wendy’s finger, Michael’s face grew solemn. Recalling what had happened the previous day, he said, "Wendy, there’s something that I’d like to explain to you."
"Yeah?" Wendy answered softly with her head bowed. She had already guessed what Michael would tell her.
"You were right about the party tonight, but the reason I kept it from you is not that I wanted to show up with Yvonne as my date. In fact, I plan on announcing that you are Mrs. Lucas tonight. Since it was meant to be a surprise, I ordered everyone to be secretive about it so that you wouldn’t find out," said Michael. "I just never expected you to find out about it beforehand, and I panicked yesterday."
Wendy looked up and into Michael’s eyes. They were calm and sincere, but she could also detect a trace of his anxiety in wanting to clarify the matter. On top of that, his concern for her earlier had seemed genuine.
She thought, how can he claim that Yvonne did not know about the party when she obviously did?
She was deeply confused. Was it Michael who was just too good at pretending to care about her, or Yvonne who was completely untrustworthy?
At Wendy’s silence, Michael grew fearful that she was still holding a grudge against him.
Sighing, he said, "I’m sorry, it’s my fault for not handling this well."
This was the first time he had ever apologized to Wendy. As the presiding chairman of MC Enterprise, there was hardly anybody in all of Lake City who could make him bow his head and apologize. But now, he was taking the initiative to do it for Wendy.
Wendy wondered if she should place her trust in Michael again.
She thought, fine, I’ll give him one more chance. If he really does announce my identity to everyone at the party tonight, I’ll stop caring about whether he’s truly in love with me or just making use of me. But if things are as Yvonne said and she does succeed in stopping him... freewebnσvel.cѳm
...
Since Wendy already knew about the party, Michael stopped trying to hide it from her. At around 4 P.M., he had a makeup artist come to visit her, "it’s nice to meet you, Mrs. Lucas. I am Daisy, your makeup artist. I am in charge of your makeup today," said Daisy as she entered the office with an assistant following behind her.
She gave Wendy a light nod to indicate her respect.
"Are you the makeup artist who only works with major movie stars?" Wendy had heard her name before. In fact, most people knew who Daisy was.
Daisy smiled, "I don’t have a preference for who I work with. I think I only got that reputation because I have indeed worked with many movie stars in the past. In fact, I’ve worked with many celebrities in the entertainment industry, as well as young ladies from various high powered families."
Wendy nodded as a smile grew on her face. She said, "In that case, I’m so excited to work with you today."
Just as expected, Daisy’s makeup skills were exceptional. She even made sure to ask if Wendy had any preferences, saying, "Mrs. Lucas, do you have any particular style that you are hoping for?"
"Not really, you can do whatever you think will be best."
Daisy nodded. After an hour of just sitting in the chair, Wendy grew restless. Michael tried to stop by during the process because he wanted. to see Wendy, but they chased him away before that could happen. They told him that they wanted him to wait until everything was done so that he could be pleasantly surprised.
Without any other choice, Michael could only wait quietly in his adjacent office.
Finally, the makeup process was completed...
When Wendy looked into the mirror and saw herself, she was astonished by her own beauty.
She had always been attractive, but after marrying Michael, she rarely dressed up. And even after she found out about her pregnancy, she only paid attention to the nutrition levels in her meals so that she would not starve.
When it came to beautifying her appearance, she had never really put in much effort into it.
With Daisy’s help, Wendy barely recognized herself in the mirror.
She reached out to touch her face, only to retract it immediately as she was afraid that she would ruin the makeup.
Smiling, Daisy complimented her, "Mrs. Lucas, you are a natural beauty. In fact, you are even prettier than so many of the celebrities I’ve worked with in the entertainment industry." It was true-Daisy had seen many beautiful people, but she rarely came across anyone of Wendy’s caliber.
The smile on Wendy’s face began to grow even wider.
"This is the custom evening gown that Mr. Lucas prepared for you, you should try it on," said Daisy as she took the golden gown from her assistant and held it up against Wendy’s frame, "It should fit you perfectly."
Since Wendy studied design, she could tell with just a glance that this golden gown was very expensive.
Not only had Michael hired Daisy to do her makeup, he had also customized this dress for her. It appeared that he truly did care about her.
Wendy only hoped that everything would go smoothly tonight. As long as Yvonne failed to ruin Michael’s plans, Wendy would stop doubting him.
Even if he was really just using her, she would submit herself to him once they got through tonight without any hiccups.
After changing into the evening gown, Wendy twirled in front of the mirror. The smile on her face grew increasingly bigger. The dress really fit her body perfectly. The color accentuated her elegance, and the short length made her thin legs look even longer.
Daisy nodded in satisfaction. However, when her gaze landed on Wendy’s abdomen, she frowned slightly and said, "Mrs. Lucas, your belly?"
Her words made Wendy look down at her own abdomen. There was a slight bump there.
Wendy had been so happy that she had almost forgotten about the child in her belly. It had been four months now, and her baby bump was finally starting to show.
