Chapter 668: Do You Know Who Wanted You Dead?

Michael saw Christian approach and subconsciously stepped in front of Wendy.

"There’s nothing more to ask." Michael refused on Wendy’s behalf.

"Are you still afraid of what I can do to Wendy?" Christian raised his hands showing his handcuffs.

Wendy reached out and gently patted Michael’s arm, whispering, "Let him ask. We won’t be seeing each other again anyway."

Michael moved aside listening to Wendy and let Christian ask her the questions he wanted.

"I’ve actually asked this question several times." Christian smiled lightly, his face was now no longer looked ruthless, only gentle and mild. The feeling was strange but also somehow familiar to Wendy. freewёbnoνel.com

It seemed that Christian used to be like this, and yet it seemed that he was not.

"If you had met me first, would you have fallen in love with me?" Christian’s eyes, full of anticipation, waited for Wendy to answer.

"No way," Wendy answered without hesitation.

After these two words were said, the tenderness in Christian’s eyes disappeared.

Reluctantly, he continued, "I mean back when we were at MC Enterprise, would you have fallen in love with me if I had been what I was back then, not some drug lord?"

Speaking of her previous time at MC Enterprise, Wendy remembered why she felt such a familiarity with Christian. When she was Michael’s assistant, Christian had joined MC Enterprise as a vice president. At the time, he had often helped her, he was warm and bright.

Unfortunately, it had all been an illusion.

"No way," Wendy answered once again.

"Why?" Christian shook his head in disbelief and said, "Michael treated you so badly at first that you couldn’t even afford enough to eat. Why wouldn’t you fall in love with me when I was so good to you in the first place?"

"Christian, faking it, doesn’t make it real," said Wendy. "You were the drug lord all this time. You were good to me for a purpose. Your gentleness, your kindness, was just a means for you to cover up your evil side."

"Yeah, faking it is always fake." Christian laughed bitterly, "From the moment I was born, I was destined to be a tragedy." Christian said nothing more and headed outside.

Wendy looked at Christian, lonely and forlorn. She had a sudden question that she wanted to ask Christian.

Looking at Christian’s back, Wendy asked, "Christian..." Christian’s footsteps stalled.

"Do you regret everything you have done?" Wendy asked.

Christian knew what Wendy was asking. She asked if Christian regretted becoming a drug lord and getting to this point.

Regret it?

Christian never seemed to have thought about it. All he knew was that he had wanted to become stronger than Michael. He wanted to defeat Michael and prove that he was also a valid descendant of the Lucas family.

As for how he became stronger, what he had experienced, the means that had been used, Christian has no longer cared. If he hadn’t taken this path, he would still have been the illegitimate son of Lucas, who would be bullied and looked down upon at will.

"Regret what I did?" He really hadn’t known if he should regret what he did.

Christian took a deep breath and laughed, "I don’t know."

Wendy didn’t say anything else.

Christian continued to walk his way out.

When he passed by Zen, his eyes glanced briefly at her. Sparing just that glance, he completely ignored her and walked right past Zen.

...

Zen was covered in wounds but still awake, she held on purely through sheer willpower.

Zen had thought that Christian would at least have something to say to her.

But she hadn’t expected him to just walk away without saying anything.

Not even any last words.

"Christian!" Zen watched Christian walk away from her and shouted his name hysterically.

Christian’s footsteps paused, but only for a moment. He then proceeded to the car.

"Oh..." Christian didn’t say a word to her, but Zen suddenly felt a coppery taste in her throat and spat out a mouthful of blood.

Just as everyone thought that Christian would get on the bus without a problem, disaster struck once again.

A bullet flew past.

It was aimed at none other than Christian.

Wendy was stood in the hall when she heard the boom of a gunshot.

Evan and Michael looked at each other, and the former immediately went out to check the situation.

Michael, on the other hand, held Wendy’s hand tightly and looked around nervously, afraid of any mishaps.

Christian no longer had a gun in his hand, and they had Christian under control.

Evan’s men certainly wouldn’t have opened fire now.

In other words, it was some other people hidden in the dark who had fired at them.

As soon as Evan went outside, he immediately asked, "What’s going on?"

"Captain, there are other people hiding in the dark." Evan’s men replied.

"Of course I know there are other people hiding in the shadows, what are you waiting for? Go get them now!" Evan said seriously, "Make sure you get them."

"Yes sir!" his men replied.

Christian, at this point, fell to the ground. The bullet had pierced through his right shoulder.

Christian had dealt with plenty of business in the underworld for years now to have developed quick reflexes. He had wanted to end his life, but his instincts compelled him to move out the way in the quickest possible time to dodge the bullets.

Although he hadn’t completely dodged it, the tiny movement deflected the bullet from hitting his heart.

Christian’s hand, subconsciously, covered the bleeding wound. He tilted his head and laughed out loudly out of a sudden.

At that time, Michael brought Wendy out with him.

Seeing Christian laughing out loud, Wendy and Michael looked at each other puzzled.

Christian laughed for a while, he laughed so hard that it brought him to tears.

Evan regarded Christian’s condition, he thought about it and explained, "We didn’t arrange for anyone to kill you."

"I know," Christian said in both tears and laughter.

If Evan or Michael had wanted to kill him, they had lots of chances to do so. They could have killed him during the duel, and Michael could easily have killed him with a gun. However, he had not. In other words, the person who wanted him dead was someone else, not them.

The person he was referring to was...

"Do you know who wants you dead?" Evan frowned at the question and then reacted as he and Michael said in unison, "Alberto!"

At this point in time, Alberto was the only person who would want Christian dead the most.

Alberto was afraid that if Christian was caught, he would confess to all the drug-dealing chains and let the whole organization be wiped out. Thus, he tried to kill Christian and silence him.

Christian also guessed that was why he would have been so desperate.

In fact, Christian had also thought of the possibility that Evan had deliberately arranged for someone to assassinate him and then planned to frame Alberto to make Christian hate him and turn against the organization.

But this possibility was quickly dismissed by Christian. Because that shot was indeed aimed at Christian’s heart. If he had not reacted quickly enough, he would have been dead.

...

"Captain, that person...is dead," Evan’s men bowed their heads down and reported, feeling somewhat guilt-ridden.

They should have captured the person alive.

Evan took a look at the man they had brought over, his forehead dripped with blood from the hole that the bullet had created.

Wendy screamed as she saw the bloodied scene. Michael immediately covered her eyes with his hand.

"I’m sorry Captain, he was dead when we found him," said the men.

It was obvious that the person was to kill himself regardless of whether he succeed or failed.

Evan was pissed to see the corpse. There was no way to bring back the dead. He took a deep breath and signaled for his men to stand down.

"Wait," said Christian. He took a deep breath and said, "Can I take a look at the killer?"

Evan hesitated for a moment before granting his request.

Christian walked over to the dead assassin, crouched down, and his entire body paused for a few seconds, in a state of poise. He blinked his eyes and seemed to have made up his mind.

Christian finally reached over and lifted the killer’s shirt.

The killer’s waist was emblazoned with a small X-shaped symbol. The mark was all too familiar to Christian.

This had been one of their organization’s top assassins, and there were only two in the entire organization at the time.

This kind of assassin would only have been sent out on a mission when there was an absolute need to get the job done.

In other words, Alberto had sent one of the organization’s only X assassins to kill him.

It was to silence him.

Although Christian had already guessed it even before he saw the mark, a wave of emotion passed through him when he saw it with his own eyes.

Christian stood up and looked down at his cuffed hands, his eyes sunken with sadness.

In the next second, tears dripped down onto the handcuffs.

Alberto was much more important to Christian than his own father. He had trained under him for several years after Alberto had him taken from school.

It was Alberto, who had trained him to become his successor.

Even his own father, Anthony Lucas, had never really taken him to heart.

Although Anthony Lucas was quite nice to him when he first got back, it was only because he had felt that he owed Christian a favor. After all, he did send Christian abroad without a care for more than a decade.

Anthony Lucas had never wanted to pass the baton to Christian as MC Enterprise’s successor. In his mind, although Christian was his son, there had been a big difference between his legitimate and illegitimate sons. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom

Christian had understood that all along, so he had not expected anything from Anthony. However, Alberto was different.

During his most difficult and painful years, Alberto had given him hope and the ability to survive. Because of this, when Christian found out that Alberto had sent someone to kill Wendy, he had been furious.

Still, he had no intention of killing him to avenge Wendy’s death. If it had been anyone else, Christian would have killed without hesitation.

Christian could understand the reason behind why Alberto wanted Wendy dead. He believed that in their line of work, they should not have relationships or soft spots for anyone.

So, he wanted to help Christian clear such obstacles along the way. Although it was for Alberto’s benefit, it had also been for Christian’s own good.

But now, Alberto had sent his X-graded killers to ensure that he perished at any cost.
