Chapter 388: What If Something Happens?
Mr. York waited until the person on the other end of the line spoke first.
"Have you had lunch yet, Michael?"
Mr. York could feel the joy from Christian.
"If you haven’t, let’s go have lunch together, and I’ll pay for it. I have something great to share with you."
"Sorry, my boss can’t make it," Mr. York answered.
"Where’s Michael?" Christian was both surprised and confused as he didn’t hear Michael’s voice.
Hearing that Christian was calling his name, Michael pretended that he was drunk and said, "You useless piece of crap! I’ve paid you so much yet you couldn’t find the evidence? I... I... I just want to freaking fire you right now!"
Christian couldn’t help but burst out laughing after hearing Michael’s voice.
"Sorry. Is Michael drunk?" Christian faked his concern and asked. "It’s not healthy to get drunk during the daytime. Please tell him not to drink so much."
"Do you have anything else to talk about, Mr. Christian? If not, I might have to hang up now. I’ll tell Mr. Michael to call you back once he sobers up," Mr. York said coldly.
He was the assistant of the president of MC Enterprise, and Michael and Christian had been sworn enemies for a long time. He knew that Christian would be suspicious if he was too polite to him.
"I just wanted to have lunch with my brother so that I can give him the invitation during lunch," Christian smiled and said. "But it seems that he’s too drunk to make it to lunch. How about this, I’ll ask someone to send him the invitation."
"Sure," Mr. York said and hung up.
Hearing the beeping sound from his phone, Christian mumbled gleefully, "How dare he hang up on me? He’s nothing but an assistant to my brother, and besides, MC Enterprise will no longer be around in a couple of months."
Both Michael and Mr. York smiled after Mr. York hung up.
After a while, one of Christian’s men sent an invitation to MC Enterprise, and Mr.
York handed it to Michael the second he received it.
The invitation was very well-made, but it was unlikely that Christian was able to make the invitation in such a short time, which meant he had made the letter a long time ago.
The letter said that Michael, the president of MC Enterprise, was invited to the press conference that was going to be held on the 11th of May. It also mentioned that Michael could bring a date to the press conference as well.
It would be five days from now.
In the meantime, Christian also sent someone to send an invitation to Wendy, who was in Rheinsville City.
Wendy didn’t receive the letter on the second day. After all, it took more than 10 hours to fly to Rheinsville City from Lake City.
The invitation to Wendy also mentioned that she could bring a date.
Naturally, Wendy was going to bring Todd as many people had learned about their relationship.
However, Christian and Todd had barely met each other before, so Wendy speculated that Christian wanted to have Wendy bring Todd to Lake City and have Michael to Yonina to the press conference.
’Well played, Christian. Well played,’ Wendy thought.
The reporters would, in no doubt, ask a lot of questions when Wendy, Todd, Michael, and Yonina showed up at the press conference at the same time as the relationships among them were too complicated.
What was originally supposed to be news at the economy section would appear in the entertainment section as well, and the article headline might read, "Michael Lucas Meets Ex Wendy Stewart!"
....
Holding the invitation in her hand, Wendy pondered if she should go to the press conference or not.
She knew well what Christian’s intention was.
After a while, she headed straight to Timothy’s office.
Timothy stood up after seeing Wendy walk in. "Hi, Wendy! What brought you here?"
"Why? Can’t I come and chat with my mentor without anything happening?" Wendy said.
"Of course, you can," Timothy replied as he dialed his assistant using the internal phone, asking him to make a glass of fresh juice.
He then looked at Wendy and said, "I’m surely happy that you’re here to chat with me, but I remember how busy you are, Wendy... And you haven’t come to my office unless you have something urgent."
"You know me so well, Mr. Woods," Wendy said as she sat down on the couch before handing the invitation to Timothy.
She asked, "Have you received this invitation yet, Mr. Woods?"
Timothy opened the letter, skimmed through it, and said, "The invitation to DR Group’s press conference? I haven’t got it yet."
He then frowned and said with dismay, "It seems that nobody even cares about me, the head of HG Enterprise, anymore. They’re only sending invitations to you. I bet you’re who people think of when they bring up HG Enterprise now."
"What do you mean? Are you jealous of your prot.." Wendy smiled.
"Of course not. I was joking," Timothy said, smiling.
He gave the letter back to Wendy and asked, "I bet you aren’t here just to show me the letter, are you?"
"Indeed not," Wendy said and nodded.
She then continued, "I reckon that Christian has sent me the invitation because of my past with Michael and my acquaintance with him, but what will other people think? If they know that Christian invited me instead of you, they will think that you’re being disrespected... That’s why I’m here to ask for your opinion. After all, I’m still an employee at HG Enterprise, so I need your insight, Mr. Chairman."
Timothy burst out laughing seeing how much Wendy revered him. He walked to Wendy’s side and patted her on the shoulders and said, "I’m such a lucky mentor."
Wendy smiled at him warmly and nodded.
"I think it’s the best for you to go since DR Group has sent you the invitation," Timothy said. "And besides, I’m not close to Christian at all, so I would’ve asked you to attend that conference even if he invited me."
"But I still think that DR Group didn’t show you the respect that you deserve," Wendy responded.
"We’re both businessmen, so interest always comes first. As for respect, we shouldn’t care about it that much," Timothy replied coolly. "I’ve heard about that bidding that Michael and Christian are trying to win, and I think the press conference is about that. It’s a huge project supported by the federal government. Even though we don’t have any subsidiaries in Lake City yet, it’ll only be beneficial to us if we can build a good relationship with DR Group. Fortunately, you’ve known Christian for a long time. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have sent you the invitation. After all, there have got to be a lot of people trying to partner with him. There’s no reason for you not to go."
"But..." Wendy frowned, pretending to look conflicted.
"But what?" Timothy asked her.
"I’ll just come clean now. You know that there’s some drama going on among me, Michael, and Christian. I came today because I don’t want to go to that press conference," Wendy admitted and sighed. "I’m wondering if you can send another else to the press conference."
"Well..." Timothy felt a bit awkward.
He lowered his head, thought about it for a second, and said, "But it was you who Christian sent the invitation to. It’d be easier if he sent the invitation to HG Enterprise, but it would feel wrong if we just sent some random representative."
"But the second collection of Moonlight Project is about to be released. What if something goes wrong and I can’t come back in time to fix it?"
What Wendy just said implied her real purpose to come to Timothy’s office.
She knew that Timothy would try to persuade her to go, so she wanted to push all the responsibilities to Timothy before she went to Lake City, then Timothy would be less likely to suspect him when issues emerged.
"I’ll still be here, won’t I?" Timothy smiled.
To assure her, he said, "Just go to Lake City. I’ll take care of the launch."
"But..."
Before Wendy could finish her sentence, Timothy continued, "Don’t worry. I had been running HG before you joined us. Don’t you have faith in your mentor?"
"That’s certainly what I meant," Wendy said, sounding embarrassed.
"Then go to Lake City." Timothy stood up and tapped Wendy on her shoulders again."If DR Group was still struggling like they were before, I wouldn’t insist that you go.
But now, Christian has won the bidding, which means his company will soon be revived and thrive again. It’ll be nothing but beneficial to us if we can establish a good relationship with them." freewebnøvel.coɱ
Timothy continued despite Wendy’s silence, "Could you go for the sake of our company?"
"Okay." Wendy nodded.
Timothy felt relieved after Wendy agreed to his request.
"The press conference is in two days, which means I’ll have to leave tomorrow if I want to make it on time," Wendy said. "Also, I want to stay in Lake City for a day or two after the press conference because I haven’t seen my mother and my grandmother for a while, so you might need to spend some extra time on all the company affairs."
Before Timothy could reply, Wendy quickly added, "I reckon I can work online, but there is a huge time difference between Lake City and Rheinsville City, which might cause some inconveniences, so I’ll have to hand over some important tasks I’m dealing with to you before I leave."
"No problem," Timothy said without hesitation.
"Then all good. I’ll head back to my office first," Wendy said.
"Sure. Thanks for going and I’ll see you when you come back," Timothy said and patted her on the shoulders again.
Wendy allowed herself a broad smile after leaving Timothy’s office.
After getting back to her own office, she started sending all the documents required for Timothy to take over her work.
Todd came to HG Enterprise’s office building to pick up Wendy after work, and Zen left the building with them.
After they stepped out of the building, Zen said, "I’ll head straight home now. See you guys tomorrow."
However, Wendy called her once she turned around, "Wait, I have something that I’d like to discuss with both of you."
Zen stopped walking, turned back, and asked, "Oh? What do you want to talk about?"
Zen didn’t remember having many interactions with Todd before, so she didn’t understand what Wendy needed both of them here for.
