Chapter 31: Has This Woman Gone Mad?
Wendy’s words made Yvonne feel like her heart was shattered. After all, Michael’s behavior recently had been strange, and he had seemed particularly concerned about Wendy’s affairs.
Yvonne thought, if Michael has really developed feelings for Wendy, what should I do? I have stayed by Michael’s side for the past three years, guarding him so painstakingly, and now that they are on the verge of divorce, I cannot let this all have been for nothing. I’ll do anything, at all costs!
Yvonne’s crying was easy to hear through the phone, "Michael, say something."
Wendy grabbed the phone and handed it to Michael. She raised her eyebrows mockingly, "Michael, say something."
Noticing Wendy’s demeanor, Michael rubbed the area between his eyebrows. He took his phone and said, "Yvonne."
"Michael, is Wendy telling the truth?" Yvonne’s cries were becoming more and more pitiful.
Wendy pushed Michael aside once again. She straightened her clothes, picked up her suitcase and laptop, and walked away without turning back.
Michael felt strangely frustrated as he looked at Wendy walking away. When he spoke to Yvonne, his tone left much to be desired. "Wendy is my wife; you knew that all along."
He did not explain himself further, but his words seemed to have a deeper implication. When Yvonne heard his response, she found herself unable to accept it.
She thought, Michael did not even bother explaining what is going on. She tightened her grip around the phone so much that the veins on her hand bulged. With a grim face, she said, "Michael, how can you say that? I’ve loved you for such a long time, and I never cared much about having any official status. Michael, how can you treat me like this?"
"I’m tired, so let’s not talk about this anymore," said Michael. He did not wish to continue discussing this with Yvonne.
He seemed slightly irritated with Yvonne’s delicate and pitiful act. The thought of Wendy’s determined and decisive look from earlier surfaced in his head.
When Yvonne heard the beeping sound over the phone signaling that Michael had hung up, she screamed in rage. She then smashed her phone on the ground. It instantly shattered.
...
When Wendy arrived at Zen’s apartment once again, her friend had returned home. She rang the doorbell, and Zen quickly answered. Zen saw Wendy standing outside with her suitcase and red-rimmed eyes. She immediately pulled her into the apartment.
After shutting the door, Zen tucked Wendy’s suitcase aside. She pulled Wendy to the couch and poured her a glass of water. Then, she said, "Wendy, what’s going on?"
Wendy pursed her lips. Shaking her head, she said, "Nothing."
"How can you say that?" Zen was not stupid. She could tell that it was something to do with Michael. She asked, "Did Michael chase you out of your apartment?"
Greeted by Wendy’s silence, Zen grew enraged. She said, "Michael is too much! It’s late at night and he still chased you out of the apartment. Isn’t he afraid that something might happen to you?"
Right after that, Zen slapped her mouth several times, "That was over the line, and I shouldn’t have said that."
"I was the one who decided to leave," said Wendy, "I don’t have many friends in Lake City, so l could only come to you. But I won’t stay for too long, I’ll find a place of my own soon and move out"
"Wendy, don’t say that. We’re such close friends, you can stay for however long you want. You don’t have to find your own apartment," said Zen comfortingly as she pulled Wendy into a hug. "Michael might not want you, but I do. In any case, since we’re both working at MC Enterprise, it’ll be nice to have someone to go to work and go home with."
Zen’s apartment consisted of one bedroom and one living room. After all, she had graduated not too long ago and was not making a high salary yet. In Lake City, being able to afford to rent an apartment alone was already. considered an accomplishment. But Zen’s apartment was not spacious. If Wendy stayed here for a long time, it Would definitely cause some inconvenience.
Wendy decided not to say anything else for the time being. She knew that Zen genuinely wanted the best for her.
...
The following day, Wendy and Zen traveled to work together. When she arrived at the office, Christian was still not there. Even though Christian did not arrange anything for her to do, Wendy decided to clean the entire office. Then, she ground some coffee beans and brewed a hot cup of coffee. When Christian arrived, she served it to him.
Christian was surprised when he saw a steaming cup of coffee sitting before him. He raised it to his lips, took a sip, and then nodded in satisfaction. He asked, "Did you personally grind the beans?"
Wendy nodded. "I don’t know how you like your coffee, so I just did what I could. Let me know if there is anything to be improved on."
"Don’t add sugar next time," replied Christian honestly.
"Noted."
Christian took another sip. He raised his head and gazed at Wendy. Observing her haggard expression and general paleness, he asked, "Did Michael follow you home last night?"
"Mr. Lucas, can I choose not to answer any questions that are not work-related?" asked Wendy in a neutral manner. fгeewёbnoѵel.cσm
"Sure," replied Christian. He did not continue to pressure her. freeweɓnøvel.com
Even if Christian did not pursue the matter, he could easily guess what had happened from how Wendy looked. But of course, Christian would not let her go that easily. After all, she was his bargaining chip against Michael. Since Wendy and Michael had ended things on such a difficult note the previous night, Christian decided to add fuel to the fire. In the afternoon, he summoned her to his office.
Christian handed Wendy a document and said, "Deliver this to the president’s office and ask him if this document can be approved."
Wendy knew that Christian was doing this on purpose, so she did not bother resisting. Since it was working hours now, Christian’s instructions fell within her scope of responsibility.
Wendy arrived at the president’s office and handed the document to Michael. She said, "The vice-president asked me to bring this document to you. He wants to know if this can be approved."
Michael looked up at Wendy. When he heard her speak, a surge of rage unfurled in his chest. He said, "You were so determined to leave last night and even swore that you wouldn’t appear before me unless you needed to. Why are you in my office so soon after that? Wendy Stewart, why are you so cheap?"
Michael had called her cheap many times in the past. Wendy had long grown numb to his insults. She placed the document before Michael. Knowing that everything she said would be futile anyway, she turned around to leave.
"Wendy Stewart!" When Wendy turned her back to Michael, he immediately felt like he had been slighted. He grew even angrier and said, "If you take one more step, I won’t read this document. Aren’t you Christian’s assistant? What can you tell him if you don’t do your job properly?"
Wendy’s stopped short.
Michael suddenly sneered again, "How could have forgotten-you’re on Christian’s side now, I’m sure he won’t pick on you for this."
He had deliberately emphasized Wendy being. on Christian’s side. The mockery in his tone was extremely evident. Before he said those words, Wendy had been considering whether she should leave. But the moment he did, Wendy’s temper flared up as well. Turning her head, she told Michael, "You’re right, Christian won’t pick on me for this. So, it’s completely up to you whether you want to read this document or give him a response. It doesn’t matter at all."
After speaking, Wendy saw Michael’s livid expression and walked away happily. But before she could get too far, she bumped into Yvonne.
Wendy did not wish to have any interaction with Yvonne. It was not because Wendy was afraid of her-she simply could not be bothered to deal with Yvonne.
Wendy never understood why Michael was fond of a b*tch like Yvonne. Or rather, it was surprising that even someone as perceptive as Michael could not tell what kind of person Yvonne really was.
Perhaps it was just as people always commented on the internet. It did not matter what kind of personality b*tches like Yvonne had. All that mattered was that they were attractive and knew how to please their boyfriends.
Although Wendy did not wish to interact with Yvonne, the latter did not feel the same.
When she saw Wendy, Yvonne ran up to her. As if she were possessed, she raised her hand and gave Wendy a tight slap. At the same time, she cursed loudly at Wendy, "You slkt, how dare you steal Michael away from me! You know very well that Michael doesn’t like you, why do you still try to seduce him so shamelessly."
Wendy never expected Yvonne to hit her. She covered the left side of her face, feeling slightly bewildered.
She thought, has this woman gone mad?
Wendy used to tolerate Yvonne’s behavior and accommodate her endlessly as she was afraid of incurring Michael’s wrath.
But now, she was not even afraid of Michael anymore, so why did she have to put up with Yvonne’s anger?
Without even thinking about it, Wendy raised her hand and slapped Yvonne right back.
At this, Yvonne was even more stunned than Wendy.
She could not believe that Wendy had hit her back.
With widened eyes, Yvonne said incredulously, "Wendy Stewart, how dare you hit me? Who do you think you are?!"
As she spoke, she pounced on Wendy once again.
This time, Wendy was prepared. She quickly dodged Yvonne’s attack.
Yvonne ended up slapping the air. Feeling enraged now, she lifted her purse to whack Wendy with it.
Wendy was not a pushover. She caught Yvonne’s purse in midair, gave it a forceful tug, and then released her grip.
Yvonne immediately fell to the ground.
As they had met along the corridor, their commotion could be heard from the various offices surrounding them, such as the president’s office and the staff’s office.
Soon, Michael and the staff members emerged.
Yvonne sat on the ground in an embarrassed state. She covered her face with her hands and started crying in an aggrieved manner when she saw Michael.
She had been waiting for Michael to coax her after he hung up on her last night.
Unexpectedly, Michael did not do as she wanted. In fact, he did not call her even though she did not show up at work today.
Yvonne was really starting to feel the heat. She had stayed by Michael’s side for over three years, all because she coveted the position of the president’s wife.
She could not afford to fail at this juncture.
The staff members were greeted with the sight of Wendy standing tall and proud whereas Yvonne sat on the ground, crying pitifully.
They had never liked Wendy. On top of that, Yvonne was close to them as she would usually buy them gifts. In such a situation, it was only natural that they would take Yvonne’s side.
One of the staff members stepped forward and helped Yvonne up. She said, "Miss Taylor, what’s the matter with you?"
Yvonne immediately started complaining, "I don’t know what happened as well, Miss Stewart suddenly slapped me."
Wendy sneered at Yvonne’s antics.
After all these years, Yvonne’s methods were still as vulgar as ever.
"Yvonne, can’t you switch things up a little?" asked Wendy as she pointed at the handprint on her own face, "Who struck whom first? We can look at the CCTV footage."
Nobody believed Wendy’s words.
"Miss Stewart, we all know that you used to have a crush on the president. But now that you’re the vice-president’s assistant, there is no need for you to treat Miss Taylor like this."
"That’s true. You used to love bullying Miss Taylor, we all saw it with our own eyes. It just wasn’t appropriate for us to say anything."
"We’re not trying to frame you here, Miss Stewart. Everyone knows that Yvonne is Mr. Lucas’s girlfriend. I’m just saying, anyone with a conscience would not do the things that you did."
These staff members were already close to Yvonne in the first place. On top of that, Yvonne enjoyed the prestige of being Michael’s girlfriend.
Since Michael was standing right there, it was only rational for them to speak on Yvonne’s behalf.
After complaining to the staff members, Yvonne immediately ran up to Michael. She grabbed his arm, her tears falling freely as she said, "Michael, look at what she did to my face. You have to get back at her for me."
