Chapter 30: This Is The Last Time
Christian sat in the backseat watching Wendy take big strides away from them without so much as a backward glance. Laughing, he said, "Look what you’ve done, Michael! You’ve chased Wendy away. I already warned you, it’s fine if you want to treat me badly, but you should be nicer to her. Otherwise, she might really become my wife and your sister-in-law."
Michael was already furious. When he heard Christian provoke him, he turned around with his fist raised and threw a punch at his brother.
Unfortunately, the car was cramped, and his movements were limited. Christian dodged slightly and easily avoided his attack.
Christian dropped his usual affable smile and said coldly, "Wendy will become my woman sooner or later." With that, he opened the door and got out of the car.
He did not bother going after Wendy because he knew very well that Wendy did not wish to see either of them at this moment.
...
Wendy flagged down a cab. When the driver asked for her destination, she mumbled the address of her apartment without thinking. But right after, she was reminded of what Michael had said and immediately changed her destination to Zen’s apartment. Since the apartment belonged to Michael as well, she did not wish to go back there.
She used to wait for Michael to come home every night, much like a forgotten concubine in long-ago times who would wait endlessly in an isolated part of the palace for the emperor’s favor. When Wendy thought of her past self, she felt like she had been blinded for the last three years.
Wendy arrived at Zen’s house soon after, but no one was in. Clearly, Zen was working overtime. Her friend was extremely dedicated to her work.
As it was only 9 P.M. now, it was normal for Zen to not be home yet.
Wendy had nowhere to go, but it did not make sense for her to continue waiting here. After thinking about it, she decided to return home to pack up some of her daily necessities before coming back to Zen’s place.
Wendy took a cab to her apartment. When she arrived home, she did not expect the lights inside to be switched on. She whipped out her keys to unlock the front door. Just as she had expected, Michael was there.
When Michael saw Wendy, he finally felt relieved. But he still said, "I’m surprised that you’re home at all. Why didn’t you go on a date with Christian?"
Wendy was not surprised to hear that. In fact, she could not be bothered to pay any attention to Michael.
Michael watched Wendy’s sullen face, observing her silence. Shortly after, he broke the silence again, "I’m hungry, go and cook for me."
If this was like before, Wendy would have immediately gone to prepare Michael’s favorite dishes. But now, Wendy remained where she was, not moving an inch.
"I said I’m hungry, did you hear me?" said Michael once again when he noticed Wendy’s inaction. "Go and cook for me."
Wendy turned her head, fixating her cold gaze on the man standing before her. This was the man that she had loved for the past three years, but he felt extremely foreign to her. She stared at Michael for a very long time.
Michael grew impatient and said, "Are you deaf?"
Michael’s words were always so harsh. Wendy turned around and went to the kitchen.
Michael was worried that Wendy might throw a tantrum. Even though she used to be extremely obedient and would listen to whatever he said, she seemed to have changed after meeting Christian. Her compliance allowed Michael to feel some relief.
Even though Wendy’s personality had exhibited some changes, it seemed that she still could not resist him. Michael watched Wendy from behind as she bustled around the kitchen. He loosened his tie and waited for his meal.
Soon, Wendy had a cooked a bowl of noodles. She placed it before Michael.
"This is the last time I’m cooking for you," said Wendy. She watched as Michael, who had just picked up his chopsticks, halted all movement when he heard her.
"What do you mean by that?" Michael raised his head, regarding her doubtfully. Then, he raised his eyebrows mockingly and said, "Are you only retreating right now so you can advance more in the future? Do you think that I’ll fight for you and ask you to stay just because you’re doing this?"
Wendy felt that talking to Michael was a complete waste of her effort. So, she decided to avoid that completely. Instead, she turned around and went to pack her clothes.
Michael only realized that something was wrong when he saw Wendy emerge from the room with her suitcase. Setting his chopsticks aside, he approached Wendy and grabbed her bag. He said, "I’m warning you, Wendy Stewart, don’t use this approach."
"Michael, why won’t you believe me no matter what I say?" Wendy was beyond disappointed.
As she gazed at Michael’s face, she felt nothing but unfamiliarity and resistance. "Since the car belongs to you, I’ve given it back. And since the apartment belongs to you too, I’ll leave right now. But why is my decision to leave perceived as a trick? Do you think that I’m unaware of how you’ve treated me for the past three years? I used to behave so shamelessly in the past only because I knew better than anyone else that even if I died on the streets outside, you still wouldn’t spare me a glance. So, tell me, why Would I possibly test your willingness to keep me around by pretending to leave?"
Michael was dumbfounded. He knew that Wendy’s words were all true. However, he could not accept this new revelation so quickly.
He thought, this woman loves me so much, to the extent that she can’t even help herself, and these are not the words that she should be saying to me.
Michael knew that he had gone overboard with his words in the car, but apologizing was out of the question. He said, "I just made a few casual remarks, is it really necessary for you to be doing this? I’ve said worse things to you in the past ..."
Michael regretted it the moment those words left his lips.
"You’re right, you’ve said even worse things to me in the past," Wendy sneered.
She used to love Michael, so she would put up with any and everything. She even lost her own dignity for what she could tolerate. But today, she no longer wished to do that.
Wendy replied, "I only came back here to pack my things. Don’t worry, besides work meetings where it’s inevitable for us to meet, you can rest assured that I won’t show up in front of you ever again."
With that, Wendy picked up her suitcase once again and started shoving more things into it.
As Michael watched her pack, he suddenly felt dazed. He thought, is this person standing before me really Wendy Stewart? Is she the same shameless woman who loved me to no end?
Michael stood there, suddenly at a loss as to what his next move should be. Wendy did not take anything valuable with her. After all, she did not own anything expensive, mostly just clothes that she bought at discounted prices online. The only pricey thing she had was the laptop she had used for three years.
With her suitcase in one hand and her laptop in the other, Wendy walked past Michael. She placed her key on the table and said, "I’m returning your keys. Let me know when you decide to agree to the divorce."
As Michael watched Wendy walk right past him with her suitcase, his hands gradually curled into fists. At the exact moment she stepped out of the door, Michael finally spoke, "Wendy, where can you go if you leave now? Are you going to stay in a hotel? Or are you going to Christian?" freewebnoveℓ.com
"You don’t have to concern yourself with where I’m going," replied Wendy coldly without so much as looking back. "Between the two of us, the only thing left to discuss is getting divorced."
"Wendy Stewart, do you think that Christian is sincere toward you?" Michael yelled. "You’re merely a pawn in his hands, a pawn he’s using against me. If you have really fallen for him, you will be doomed forever."
When Wendy heard the last two words, she thought about how she had spent the last three years. She turned her head, tears glistening in her eyes. Her voice was choked when she said, "Michael, I was doomed forever when I fell in love with you."
She had spent three years, three long, painful years, suffering every waking moment. She obviously knew that Michael loved Yvonne, but she still chose to torture herself by loving him.
Now, she just wanted Michael to let her go and for their paths to never cross ever again.
"Why, do you regret falling in love with me?" Michael sneered. He said in a mocking tone, "Wendy Stewart, who do you think you are? You were the one who tried to come between me and Yvonne, and you forced me to marry you. When you wanted to work as my personal assistant, you forced me to let you join the. company. Now that Christian has returned from abroad and you’ve found someone more eligible, do you wish to kick me aside? Not even in your dreams!"
Michael stepped forward furiously. He grabbed Wendy’s suitcase and tossed it aside. Wendy had seen Michael in this state many times. She used to feel afraid, but not anymore. She walked over and picked up her suitcase, only for Michael to snatch it from her immediately and toss it aside once again.
Wendy laughed coldly, "This suitcase contains nothing but some old clothes. Since you don’t want me to take them with me, I’ll leave them here."
She then turned around with the intention of leaving.
Michael grabbed her hand, using so much force that Wendy felt like her wrist was about to shatter. He roared, "You can’t leave!"
He pulled her back into the apartment and then pushed her onto the couch. His eyes were brimming with rage and hatred as he said, "Do you think that you can leave me and go with Christian just because you’ve blinded Grandmother with your lies? I will never let you go."
Michael did not know what Christian and Wendy had said to Mrs. Lucas in private. All he knew was that Mrs. Lucas had summoned them home in anger to resolve the issue of Wendy working as Christian’s assistant. But after they both chatted privately with her, she decided to wash her hands off the matter completely. Michael could not help but wonder if they had asked for Grandmother’s blessings to be together.
After all, Mrs. Lucas cared very much about their family. But not many people knew about Wendy’s identity as Michael’s wife. Moreover, she was very fond of Wendy, and she knew that Michael often mistreated her. Now, Christian had returned from abroad and Wendy seemed to have taken a liking to him. Michael could not help but suspect that perhaps they had deceived his grandmother into giving them her blessings as a couple.
Wendy knew very well what Michael’s next step would be now that he was in this state. She subconsciously covered her belly with her hand and with a sneer, said, "Michael, why are you so angry right now? Are you jealous? Why, have you fallen in love with me?"
When Michael took in those words, he was momentarily dumbfounded. He thought, did I fall in love with Wendy? Is that possible? Why would I fall in love with Wendy? l just don’t want Wendy to be with Christian. I don’t want her to get her way.
Wendy knew clearly that Michael was not in love with her. She had said it just to agitate him.
Since Michael hated her so much, he would definitely feel terrible about himself if what she said was true and he had fallen in love with her.
Wendy took advantage of Michael’s momentary distraction to shove him away. But he grabbed her hand and pushed her back down onto the couch. Before he could make his next move, his phone started ringing.
Yvonne was calling...
Michael hesitated, but did not answer the phone.
The timing of this call was both mocking and ridiculous to Wendy. However, it was precisely Yvonne’s call that was helping her right now.
Wendy stretched out her hand and quickly answered the call on Michael’s behalf. Even though the loudspeaker mode was not activated, they were both close enough to the phone to hear Yvonne’s demure voice, "Michael, where are you now? I made dinner, and I’ve been waiting for you for a long time."
"Your beloved Yvonne is looking for you," Wendy tried to imitate Yvonne’s tone, but it only made her feel repulsive.
"Michael, whose voice is that? Is that Wendy? Michael, why are you with her?" Yvonne’s head went blank when she heard Wendy’s voice.
Wendy deliberately spoke again, "Your beloved Michael is pressed against me right now."
