Chapter 278: What Are You Hiding From Me?

Wendy and Leah followed behind Jake and went into the house.

She looked around the living room and did not see Michael.

"Mrs. Lucas, welcome back," a staff smiled and greeted Wendy, looking worried.

"Have you seen Jake?" Wendy asked.

"He’s at..."

Before the staff could finish his sentence, Mrs. Lucas suddenly appeared.

She went down the stairs with a cane in hand and said, "Wendy, you’re home!"

Mrs. Lucas was happy to see her.

Wendy noticed that the old woman was walking down unsteadily, so she quickly went over to support her.

"Grandmother, slow down, will you?" Wendy helped her down the stairs.

Mrs. Lucas held Wendy’s hand and patted it happily. "You have been gone for over a month. I miss you so much. You are finally back. Don’t even think about leaving now that you are back."

"I am just here to visit you. I’m going back tomorrow," Wendy replied.

Sure enough, Mrs. Lucas’s smile turned into a frown.

Wendy smiled and changed the subject. "Grandmother, is Michael at home?"

"Michael is..." Mrs. Lucas glanced towards the dining room hesitantly before forcing a smile, saying, "I’m so glad that you’re here. Why don’t you tell me how you’ve been lately?"

Mrs. Lucas tried to lead Wendy upstairs.

Wendy frowned. She felt that something was not right.

"Grandmother," Wendy spoke gently, "are you hiding something from me?"

Jake was acting strange and so was Grandmother.

What on earth was going on?

"How could I possibly be hiding something from you?" Mrs. Lucas smiled somewhat uneasily. "I have not seen you in ages, so I just wanted to have a nice and long chat with you."

Meanwhile, Jake came running from the dining room.

"Mommy..." Jake ran over to Wendy.

"Did you find your father?" Wendy inquired worriedly.

"Daddy is..." Jake panted. "Mommy, why don’t we go back?"

He tried to make Wendy let go of Grandmother.

She saw Jake coming from the dining room, so she headed over there to check.

"Mommy!" Jake called out.

However, Wendy ignored him.

Mrs. Lucas and Leah quickly followed her.

When Wendy walked over to the dining room, sure enough, she found Michael there.

However, Michael was not alone.

Michael was arguing with Winnie.

The moment they saw Wendy, they stopped talking.

The atmosphere instantly intensified.

Winnie pointed at Wendy. "Why are you back? Shouldn’t you be in Rheinsville City?"

The moment she saw Yonina, Wendy realized why Grandmother kept trying to stop her from seeing Michael.

She had traveled all the way from Rheinsville City, yet Michael was eating with Yonina.

Wendy was annoyed and upset.

She smiled and turned to leave without saying a word.

"Wendy, let me explain." Michael immediately ran after Wendy.

Winnie immediately grabbed him and said, "Michael, Yonina is our guest. You can’t leave the table when a guest is around."

"Since you invited her, you can entertain her yourself!" Michael flung aside Winnie’s hand hard, and she ended up tripping altogether.

The sound of Winnie crying in pain made Michael turn to check on her.

Seeing that Winnie was fine, Michael quickly ran after Wendy.

Winnie lay on the floor, complaining, "How could my son do that to me? He is absolutely unfilial!"

Yonina stepped forward, reaching out to help Winnie up, and said, "Ma’am, get up first."

"It’s still Yonina who is good to me." Winnie’s expression changed when she saw Yonina.

She stood up, grabbed Yonina’s hand, and said gently, "Yonina, sorry about today.

Don’t worry, I will make sure Michael gives you an explanation."

"Ma’am, Michael didn’t actually do anything wrong." Yonina bit her lip and blushed, a little embarrassed. "No need to give me an explanation."

She actually knew that Winnie had called Michael today.

She also knew that Michael loved Wendy and their children, but there was nothing else she could do.

It was just that no one had expected Wendy back today.

All of them were surprised.

Michael chased Wendy out the door.

Although Wendy was wearing high heels, Michael had a hard time chasing her at this point.

Leah and Jake quickly followed Wendy.

"Wendy, Wendy..." Michael looked at Wendy’s back, and he slowed down.

Wendy heard Michael’s voice but didn’t turn around.

Michael and Winnie, along with Yonina, were sitting at a table for dinner.

Wendy didn’t have to think about it to know what was going on.

’I have only been away for a month, and Michael is already dining with Yonina?’

Wendy thought.

Even if it was arranged by Winnie, couldn’t he have refused?

As she thought about this, Wendy walked faster.

She felt that coming back to Lake City was a joke.

"Mommy! Mommy!" Leah cried desperately as she followed behind her and couldn’t catch up with her.

Wendy heard Leah’s voice, turned back to see the two children, and took a deep breath.

She slowed her pace a bit, then took one child by the hand and headed outside the mansion.

Jake looked behind and saw Michael, who had been shaken off. The boy frowned.

He tilted his head, clutched Wendy’s hand, and said, "Mommy, aren’t you curious as to why Daddy hasn’t caught up with you by now?"

Wendy sniffed and said, "It’s because he didn’t want to."

But Jake’s words were a wake-up call for Wendy.

If Michael wanted to catch up with her, how could he not? Wendy angrily asked Jake,

"After I left Lake City, did Michael often not come home? Or did he come home late?"

Leah immediately nodded and said, "Yes, Mommy, Daddy is very busy at work, and we rarely see him."

At that, Jake immediately reprimanded Leah, "Leah, don’t talk nonsense."

"I’m not talking nonsense. Daddy’s just very busy," Leah countered.

Michael was indeed busy, and he used to have a hectic schedule even when Wendy was home.

Now that she was not in Lake City, Michael was even more focused on his work.

However, when Leah said this, Wendy misunderstood and became even angrier.

She kept walking faster.

Leah was too young to keep up with Wendy’s pace and shouted, "Mommy, slow down! I can’t keep up!"

Wendy slowed down a bit.

Jake looked back again. Seeing Michael, he sighed. Jake stood still, and he said to Wendy, "Mommy, I think you’d better turn around and look."

"Why would I turn around?" Wendy said in exasperation. "Not only should I not turn back, but I shouldn’t have come back."

"Mommy," Jake stood still and said with a sigh, "with what happened today, Daddy must not have known that Yonina was coming either. Daddy is usually very busy, but it’s all about work. It may not be what you think it is."

When Wendy saw Jake standing still and not leaving, she was a bit helpless and had no choice but to stop in her tracks.

When Wendy saw Yonina earlier, her first reaction was to get angry.

She had worked her ass off to come back to Lake City early and be by their side.

She wanted to surprise Michael, but was shocked instead.

"Wendy..." Michael limped and finally caught up.

He reached out to tug on her sleeve.

Wendy turned back and looked at him with a sullen expression on her face.

Then, Wendy smiled lightly and said, "Don’t you need to entertain your family’s guests?"

Then Wendy walked away without waiting for Michael to speak. "I’m really sorry that I came without a notice."

"Wendy, don’t say that." Cold sweats began to break out on Michael’s forehead, and his face turned a little pale as he explained, "I didn’t know Yonina was coming today,

and I didn’t know until I got here that my mom had invited her over."

Wendy said with a cold smile, "You didn’t know I was coming back, did you?"

"It’s true that I didn’t know you were coming back today either." Michael quickly added, "But I’m glad you’re back." free𝑤ebnovel.com

Michael reached out to take Wendy’s hand, but she shook it off.

She saw that Michael’s expression was a little off and frowned slightly.

Then, Wendy looked at him from head to toe.

The next second, Wendy saw Michael’s suit pants, which were wet and moist.

She frowned and was curious.

How could his suit pants be wet and moist?

Looking closely, Wendy realized that it was blood.

His thigh was bleeding.

She squatted down right away and cried, "What happened to your leg?"

Wendy remembered what Jake had just said about why Michael hadn’t caught up with them.

Earlier, Wendy thought that Michael probably did not want to chase after them.

Now, it seemed that Michael was injured.

He was bleeding because he tried to run after her.

But how could Michael be injured?

The day before yesterday, he did not go to Rheinsville City because he was injured?

The moment she saw Michael’s injury, Wendy’s anger dissipated. It was replaced by worry and heartache.

No wonder Jake tried to say something a while ago.

"It’s nothing." Michael move his injured leg backward to not to let Wendy see it and said, "Don’t worry about it."

"Don’t worry about what..." Wendy’s eyes were filled with worry as she said,

"What’s wrong with you?"

Wendy looked at his thigh that was still bleeding, and a large portion of his black pants were wet.

When Wendy saw that Michael wasn’t talking, she lowered her head and asked Jake,

"Jake, tell me."

Jake should know.

Jake blushed, a little embarrassed.

He lowered his head and whispered, "Yes, it’s Grandma..."

"Grandma?"

Jake was clearly referring to Winnie.

Wendy pursed her lips and instructed the maid, "Bring the medical kit here."

Then Wendy continued, "I’ll try to stop the bleeding first, and then I’ll take you to the hospital."

Blood kept flowing on Michael’s thigh, and there was no telling how much blood would be lost without treatment.
