Chapter 273: You’re So Afraid Of Me
Todd and Timothy could see the unease in Wendy’s expression as she returned to her seat.
Todd asked, "Did something happen in Lake City?"
Wendy sighed and replied, "I still don’t have any details on what happened, but I think something pretty bad must have happened."
"Didn’t Michael say they were all fine?" Todd asked again.
"The three of them are fine. It’s Winnie Quinn." She looked down at the table and said, "Apparently, her condition has worsened. But I have this nagging feeling that Jake is hiding something from me."
Todd had felt the same when he picked up that phone call from Michael, but he didn’t think much of it since Michael wasn’t obliged to tell him anything. But since Wendy had put it this way, something really bad must have happened.
She didn’t feel like eating anymore. "This will not do. I’d better go back and find out what’s happened."
Then she picked her phone up and began booking plane tickets again.
"I’ll go with you," said Todd.
"No need, I’ll go back by myself."
Todd was a busy man and he had already spent an entire day taking care of her.
Besides, she didn’t know how long she was going to stay in Lake City this time, so she didn’t want to disrupt his work over her own personal matters.
When Timothy heard that she wanted to return to Lake City, he asked, "Did you say you were going back to Lake City?"
She nodded.
"When will you be back then?" Timothy was afraid that she would go to Lake City and not return to Rheinsville for a long time.
They were only halfway through their new project, and if Wendy quit now, they would suffer tremendous losses.
She knew what he was worried about, so she reassured him, "I’ll come back as soon as possible. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure my work isn’t affected."
Todd noticed that Wendy was about to book the earliest flight out, so he took the phone from her and changed it to the earliest flight the next morning instead. "You should rest well tonight. I’ll send you to the airport tomorrow morning."
"But..." She tried to protest.
Todd cut her off. "Listen to me this time, all right?"
He completed the flight booking for her before returning the phone to her.
"Now, stop worrying and enjoy your birthday dinner," he said while getting more food for her.
"Corrine, why don’t you book your return flight too?" Timothy felt bad for being so pushy, but he was afraid that Wendy might remain in Lake City for a long time.
If she ended up staying there for ten days or more, the new project would be delayed by that same amount of time. Each day lost was money lost too.
"Don’t worry, I’ll just pop in for a while," Wendy explained. "I’ll just be there for two days and there are so many flights a day, so I can book my return flight at any time."
Timothy was a little less worried to hear this and nodded.
Even though Wendy stayed on for the rest of the meal, her mind was on her family, and she didn’t really feel like eating anymore.
After the meal, Todd sent her home.
The car came to a stop at the car park and Wendy unbuckled her seatbelt as she said, "Thank you for today, Todd. I’ll take a cab to the airport tomorrow, so you don’t have to send me there."
"No worries. I’ll still come and pick you up tomorrow," insisted Todd.
"It’s getting late, so I won’t invite you upstairs." Wendy got out of the car and waved at Todd with a smile. "Bye!"
"Bye!" said Todd before driving off.
She watched his car drive off before heading towards the lift lobby.
But after taking just a few steps, she could hear footsteps behind her...
As the footsteps drew nearer and nearer, Wendy took deep breaths and tried to calm herself down as much as possible.
She didn’t turn back and just kept walking as quickly as she could.
After some time, the sound of the footsteps faded, and she breathed a sigh of relief.
She plucked up the courage to slowly turn around, only to find that there was nobody behind her.
Just when she thought she was hearing things from being too exhausted, the footsteps started again.
This time, she didn’t dare to look back again.
She wasn’t religious and didn’t believe in ghosts, but the car park was so quiet at night and seemed so creepy in the dim lights.
So, she walked swiftly to the elevator and swiped the card reader with her apartment key.
The elevator doors opened, and she ran in and jabbed the button to close it quickly, but the man behind her was still quicker. ƒrēewebnovel.com
She raised her head to look at the man who had just walked into the elevator to find that it was Christian!
Wasn’t he supposed to be in Lake City? Why was he in Rheinsville? And worse still, why was he at her place? This couldn’t be a coincidence.
She took a deep breath and looked nervously at him as she stammered, "Wh-why are you here?"
When the doors began to close, she immediately jabbed the button to open the door again.
There wasn’t anybody in the vicinity, so she certainly didn’t want to be trapped in the same elevator as Christian.
Even though she hadn’t fully regained her memory, she remembered vividly everything he had done three months ago while she was in the hospital.
This man was dangerous.
He smiled when he saw what she did and looked at her as he asked, "Are you that afraid of me?"
She almost shouted at him for asking a stupid question. Who wouldn’t be afraid of someone you regarded as dangerous that suddenly appeared at your place of residence?!
But even though she didn’t say it out loud, he could see the answer in her eyes.
She was really very afraid of him.
He looked into her eyes, and his hand automatically stretched out to touch her face. But she dodged his hand before he could reach her.
She kept an eye on him as she slowly shifted towards the elevator door. She was going to see if she could make a run for it. But he noticed what she was trying to do and used his long legs to block her way.
Just then, she heard some footsteps approaching and started shouting at the top of her lungs, "Help! HELP!"
Her voice made those footsteps start running towards her.
But before they could reach the elevator, Christian stretched over and pressed the button to close the elevator doors.
She tried to press the other button, but Christian blocked her from doing so.
Someone had arrived at the lift lobby, but the doors had already closed.
She slammed her hands against the elevator walls and yelled, "Help me! Please!"
But the people outside the elevator couldn’t hear her anymore.
The elevator wasn’t small, but it wasn’t that large either.
Wendy moved as far back as possible and huddled into a corner. She looked at him with some fear in her eyes as she tried to warn him, "Christian, I’m warning you. We’re in Rheinsville City, and they install cameras in their elevators. If you try anything funny, I’ll call the cops!"
He slowly came closer to her, and his smile became rather strange as he observed how frightened she looked. "Why are you so afraid of me? Wendy, you don’t have to be."
She swallowed a mouthful of saliva when she heard him call her ’Wendy’. This man was getting more and more creepy and terrifying.
But at the same time, she didn’t dare to anger him either.
After all, they were stuck in an elevator together without anybody else.
If she provoked him now, she might be in danger.
