Chapter 186: If I Can’t Have Wendy, Neither Can You
Christian finally got himself off the floor and saw that it was Michael who had come.
He sneered, "Haha, my dear brother, do you know why I have come here? You dared not tell my sister-in-law about the past, right? I told her everything for you. Haha... if I can’t have Wendy, neither can you!"
Before the echo of Christian’s words even faded, Michael had kicked him again.
Immediately after that, he threw a punch, hitting Christian right in the middle of his face. Christian was getting badly beaten up, and he spat out a mouthful of blood.
Wendy heard them fighting and cried out, "Michael, stop!"
She was afraid Michael would accidentally kill Christian in a fit of anger. Although her unwanted midnight visitor had not come in peace, no harm had come to Wendy. It would be disastrous if Michael killed a man in the hospital.
However, Michael was tightly in the grip of his rage and could not hear Wendy’s cries at all.
Left with no other choice, Wendy made her way off the bed and reached out to pull Michael back. Michael had pulled back his arm to punch Christian again. Not having noticed Wendy, he inadvertently bumped into her and she fell to the ground.
"Ah!" Wendy cried out in shock.
That finally got Michael’s attention and he turned around. When he saw her on the ground, he quickly helped her up. "Are you hurt? Are you feeling okay?"
Michael’s concerned questions reminded her of the memory fragments she saw in her mind earlier.
There was no way he could be the man in her memory. Her husband was so good to her, he wouldn’t walk past her with his arms around another woman. He wouldn’t remain unmoved as she begged him on her knees.
She had yet to calm herself, and her pulse was still racing. "I’m fine. What about you?"
"I’m okay." Michael looked Wendy over to make sure she was uninjured as she claimed. Only when he ascertained that she really was okay, did he heave a sigh of relief.
Christian suddenly stood up and threw a punch at Michael’s head. Grunting in pain,
Michael lashed out at him with another kick. There was no way Christian could have won against Michael anyway. He was drunk and unsteady on his feet. The kick by Michael made Christian stagger backward before falling heavily on the ground. He tried but had trouble getting up again.
Wendy held on tightly to Michael’s hand. She felt him surging forward and quickly stopped him. "Stop hitting him. Let’s call the police. He really might die if you continue!"
The hospital staff finally heard the commotion and rushed in to see what had happened. They surrounded Christian, and Wendy held Michael back so he could not attack Christian again.
When the hospital staff saw Christian, they were taken aback by the identity of the intruder.
Michael removed his hand from Wendy’s and gave Christian another kick before picking up his cell to call the police.
Since Michael had called personally, the police arrived exceptionally quickly.
"Mr. Lucas, what happened?" the police asked Michael the moment they entered the room.
Michael pointed at Christian who was on the ground and said, "This man came into the hospital to harass my wife in the middle of the night. Please deal with him according to the law!"
"Definitely!" the policeman answered before turning to look at the man on the ground. "Bring him back to the station!" he ordered.
Several other police officers immediately pulled Christian up off the ground.
Although he had been quite badly beaten up by Michael, his features were still recognizable.
Shocked, the police officers stammered, "Mr. Lucas?"
Michael cleared his throat irritably. He knew that the ’Mr. Lucas’ they were referring to was Christian this time, not him.
"Don’t tell me you are not able to handle this impartially?" Michael asked imperiously. "If you are unable to do it, get someone who can!"
"We can, we definitely can!" The officer smiled and signaled to the other officers, "Bring him back to the station!"
The officer in charge glanced at Michael and Wendy then faced Wendy and asked gently, "Do you think you’re up to giving a statement?"
Wendy nodded before narrating the event of the night to the officer.
After he was done taking down the statement, Michael asked the officer, "What will you do with Christian?"
"Well..." The officer was stuck between a rock and a hard place. He stretched out five fingers and said, "Since Mrs. Lucas was not injured, the crime is, at most, attempted assault. However, you beat Mr. Lucas up so badly, the most we can keep him in remand is five days."
The police officer dared not say too much. Christian might come after them when he sobered up.
In truth, they dared not even arrest Christian Lucas.
If it were anyone else who had made the call, the police might have closed one eye and let Christian go.
However, Michael had personally made the call and they had no choice but to first placate Michael. frёeweɓηovel.coɱ
"Five days? He obviously had malicious intent. The obvious bruises on my wife’s neck are proof of that. Look." Michael pointed at Wendy’s neck. There were some bruises there, but they were not too serious.
"But sir, you beat Mr. Christian Lucas up so badly. He has injuries all over him," said the police officer timidly.
"By that, do you mean to bring charges against me for assault on his behalf?" asked Michael.
"No, no!" The officer hurriedly denied Michael’s accusation. "That’s not what I mean. I’m just trying to do things according to the law, please don’t make things difficult for me, Mr. Lucas!"
"One month!" Michael interjected. "Keep him in remand for one month. Don’t tell me about the law. Otherwise, you can release him, but think carefully before you do that."
"Ah..." The police officer had no choice but to nod his head in agreement.
After the officer left, Michael insisted that Wendy go for a full-body checkup. He still felt worried about her.
Wendy could sense his worry and anxiety. However, she shook her head. "There’s really no need. I’m fine."
"To be on the safe side, you should get checked out." Michael thought for a while before saying, freewёbnoνel.com
"How about this? Just let the doctor take a look at you. I will feel better if he says you’re fine."
Unable to convince Michael otherwise, Wendy agreed.
The checkup showed that Wendy was, indeed, uninjured. Michael finally heaved a sigh of relief.
Back in the hospital room, Michael helped Wendy onto the bed and said, "Wendy, I think it’s better if I sleep with you."
Wendy’s heart skipped a beat when she heard that.
Worried that she may misunderstand, Michael hurried to explain, "I’m just worried that something like what happened earlier might happen again. Who knows what he might have done to you if I had come a little later! Wendy, I cannot let anything happen to you again. Don’t worry, I’m just lying on the bed next to you, I will not touch you."
Wendy was still in shock from what happened earlier. However, when Michael said ’again’, her curiosity piqued and she asked, "What do you mean by ’again’? What happened to me in the past?"
Guilt flashed in Michael’s eyes when she suddenly asked that question. It was lucky Wendy could not see anything then.
"Didn’t you just get into an accident? We’re lucky you survived. I’m afraid something might happen to you again!" replied Michael.
Wendy nodded.
"So, you’re okay with it?" Michael was elated and immediately got into the bed next to her after lifting the covers.
"No, I only nodded in response to your earlier statement about me being lucky to have survived the accident." Wendy felt the mattress sink down when Michael sat down and tensed up.
She had barely gotten used to the fact that she was married and had a husband, much less share the bed with him.
At this time, Michael made full use of his lack of shame and simply laid down. "I’m really sleepy, I’m going to sleep first. Goodnight!"
Wendy reached out and gave him a little shove and realized she couldn’t move him at all.
She was perplexed and exasperated.
