Chapter 185: You Are My Greatest Misery

Christian had drunk too much that day. The words Zen had spoken to him at the carpark in the rain replayed over and over again in his head.

He admitted that Zen was right. He didn’t dare visit Wendy in the hospital. He also knew that his brother had been accompanying Wendy at the hospital every day.

Christian was jealous, so jealous that he was about to go crazy.

It wasn’t often that he drank but he couldn’t help himself that day. At first, it was just a few sips, then, he started drinking more and more.

No, he could not stand by and watch Wendy and Michael grow closer! Christian drove straight to the hospital. He knew exactly which room Wendy was in.

It was already midnight and he arrived at her room without any trouble. Wendy was awakened by the sound of the door opening.

After she had lost her sight, all her other senses had become sharper.

She called out, "Michael, is that you? You’ve not gone to bed yet?"

However, there was no answer. Frowning, Wendy felt anxious. Something was not right.

Suddenly, the pungent smell of stale alcohol wafted to her nose. The person who entered her room was not Michael. He wouldn’t come to the hospital to see her after drinking!

"Who are you? What do you want?" Wendy was afraid and sat up in bed. She groped for the buzzer at the top of the bed that was used to call the nurse.

Christian reached out and grabbed her hand. This warm and soft touch made Christian’s heart beat faster.

"Don’t touch me! If you don’t let me go, I will call the security!" Wendy was so scared that she had curled into a ball on the bed. She opened her mouth to scream for help. Before she could scream, Christian clamped a hand over her mouth.

He put a finger over his lips, signaling her to remain quiet. Then, he remembered that she could not see and asked, "You really can’t see anything?"

She tried to reply but couldn’t as his hand was still clamped tightly over her mouth.

She could only make some muffled noises.

"How come you’re not dead yet?" Christian was already drunk and his words were slurred and uninhibited.

"How great would it be if you were dead?! I wouldn’t have to think about you and miss you all the time. I wouldn’t be drinking in the middle of the night. Wendy Stewart, you are Christian Lucas’ greatest misery. When I was sent overseas more than 10 years ago, I swore that my life would only have one purpose, and that was to take back everything that was supposed to be mine! I did my best to survive. Wendy Stewart, do you know there once was a girl who loved me more than life itself when I was overseas? She took a bullet for me and helped me play for time so I could escape but I didn’t even feel sad when she died right in front of my eyes. I left without a backward glance. I thought I would not fall in love with anyone for my entire life, I thought I couldn’t love. Why did I meet you? Tell me why? Tell me!"

Wendy could not believe her ears. Christian Lucas was not a familiar name to her. No one had ever mentioned this name within earshot of her. However, if this person had the last name Lucas, he must be related to Michael.

"Do you know how miserable I am?" Christian sneered. "You have no idea! Now that you have forgotten the past, my brother stays by your side every day, giving you all the care. I guess you are very touched. Oh, you don’t know what happened between you and my brother in the past, right? Do you want to know? Shall I tell you?"

"Mmm..." Wendy grunted. She still couldn’t talk freely. fɾēewebnσveℓ.com

Christian chuckled at the sound she made and continued talking. "I don’t care if you want to know or not. Whether you like it or not, you have to listen to me."

Wendy could not remember Christian Lucas at all, much less her relationship with him. She had no idea why he had come to her in the middle of the night, drunk and talking nonsense.

According to Christian, he loved her?

The thought scared Wendy. It was hard for her to accept the fact that such a scary man loved her.

"My brother used to have a girlfriend whom he loved very much. Because of her, he ignored you after he married you. Even when you got pregnant, he sent you personally to the operating table to get an abortion."

As Wendy listened to his horrifying words, her mind thought only of how she could get loose from the hand that was restraining her.

However, as she listened, broken fragments of the past started coming back to Wendy.

A man, his hand around another woman’s waist, laughing as they walked past her... Her kneeling on the floor begging someone, her voice hoarse and weak... The suffocating feel of the seawater enveloping her when she fell into the sea...

The images were blurry, and she could not clearly see the faces of the people in them, but Wendy felt her heart plummet into the depths of a deep valley.

Did the events she saw in the images all happen to her?

No!

Wendy rejected that idea. She would not believe the words uttered by this man. She didn’t know who he was and what his intentions were, how could she believe him so easily?

She struggled to speak but couldn’t because of the hand that was still clamped tightly over her mouth. However, she still had one free hand.

She reached out and felt around the wall for the bell that would call for a nurse but could not feel it.

Taking a deep breath, Wendy tried to calm herself.

Christian was still describing all the ways in which Michael had harmed her in the past when Wendy managed to grab a cup that was on the table next to the bed and smash it down on his head with all her strength.

The sudden pain that invaded his head sent Christian into a rage.

He grabbed Wendy’s neck with his free hand and growled menacingly, "Wendy Stewart, don’t think you can treat me however you like just because I like you! The more I like you, the more I want to destroy you!"

Christian’s expression was inexplicable as he eyed Wendy’s lips. Suddenly, he seemed like a different man. He pressed his thumb down then rubbed it gently over her full lips as he muttered, "Michael got lucky."

Wendy might not be able to see, but she could feel that Christian’s head was moving nearer to hers. Sensing that he might be trying to do something to her, her heartbeat sped up as she started to panic.

Having already managed to move herself a little, she once again reached out and groped blindly along the wall, looking for the buzzer. This time, she finally managed to find it and she pressed on it desperately.

At this moment, Michael was in the business center which was just next to the nurses’ station. He did not want to disturb Wendy by working in her room.

When he heard the buzzer, he immediately stood up and headed to Wendy’s room.

Michael had instructed Wendy to press the buzzer at night if she woke up and needed to use the restroom or wanted a drink of water. He would go to her once the buzzer sounded.

He had not expected to hear sounds of a struggle coming from inside the room when he arrived at the door. As Michael flung open the door, he reached out and flipped on the light switch.

When he saw Christian half on Wendy, half on the hospital bed, one hand covering her mouth, and the other strangling her, he flew into a rage.

Rushing to Christian, Michael caught him by his collar, pulled him off Wendy and threw him to the ground. Because he was drunk, Christian was already unsteady on his feet. He fell to the ground after Michael shoved him and laid there, unable to get up.

If he had not been drunk, he would not have come to the hospital to look for Wendy in the middle of the night.

Angered beyond reason, Michael gave Christian’s prone figure on the ground a hard kick.
