Chapter 171: Who Are You? Do I Know You?

The doctor had assured them that Wendy would wake up in twenty-four hours.

There were still a few hours left to wait until the next morning so Michael asked his grandmother to go home to rest after Mary passed out. His grandmother was too old to stay in the hospital for any longer without proper rest.

Wendy had been transferred out of the ICU, but she couldn’t stay in the general ward where there were too many patients in one unit.

Michael had made up his mind to stay with Wendy for the whole night, despite knowing that she wouldn’t wake up.

Jake and Leah wanted to join him as well, but he did not allow them to.

"It’s better for you to go back and have some rest," he said to them. "The doctor already told us that Wendy won’t wake up until tomorrow. Let’s all have a good night’s rest and greet Wendy with all of our energy. Otherwise, she’d be worried if she saw how exhausted both of you are. Don’t worry, I’ll take good care of her."

Those who were in the hospital were still worried since Wendy wasn’t completely awake yet.

Mrs. Lucas didn’t head back like Michael asked her to. Instead, she choose to stay in a guest room of the hospital.

As for Michael, he sat on a chair beside Wendy’s bed, refusing to fall asleep for the whole night, as he didn’t want to miss the moment when Wendy woke up.

Unfortunately, as expected by the doctors, she didn’t wake up during the night.

When dawn was drawing near, Michael’s eyes started to lose focus. After all, he hadn’t been able to rest at all in the past three days.

Suddenly, he heard a familiar but feeble voice echoing to his ears, "Water... Water..."

The ward Wendy was staying in was still quiet as it was just half-past six in the morning, but Michael heard her voice clearly.

He instantly popped up from his chair with excitement and said, "Okay! I’ll get your water now!"

He was so thrilled that he kicked the steel chair behind him, but there was so much adrenaline pumping through his body that he couldn’t feel any pain.

All he could feel was the ecstasy from knowing Wendy had woken up.

After pouring a cup of water, he took a sip to make sure it was warm enough before helping Wendy drink.

She just woke up from the coma, so she was too weak to even hold the cup.

Michael had never cared for anyone like that before. His hand accidentally shook and he splashed the water onto Wendy’s shirt.

He clumsily grabbed some tissues beside him and wiped the water stains away while apologizing, "Sorry. I’m sorry."

Wendy’s throat was so dry after three days in a coma that it burned.

"Water..."

Michael got more and more worried hearing how frail Wendy’s voice was.

He tried to help Wendy drink the water again, but he failed the second time.

He stomped his foot in frustration as he hadn’t felt so useless in his entire life.

"It’s just helping her drink water. How did I mess even that up?" he thought.

Suddenly, a light bulb went on in his head, and he drank some of the water himself.

After, he leaned over and put his lips on Wendy’s.

The water in his mouth slid into Wendy’s, which eased the burning sensation in her throat.

Initially, she mumbled only because of the discomfort. As she became hydrated, her mind started to become clearer and clearer.

Michael put away the water and paged the doctor without hesitation, "Doctor! Doctor! Wendy has finally woken up!"

"Why is it so hard here?" Lying on the bed, Wendy felt her muscles aching.

As she glanced around, she was unable to see anything besides absolute darkness.

Still sounding feeble, she asked, "Can someone turn on the light for me?"

Michael rushed to turn on the light and draw the curtain after hearing what Wendy said.

"I just did," Michael said while walking back towards Wendy.

She frowned and pouted as she wasn’t able to see anything, "Did you? It’s still very dark."

What she muttered sent Michael into a panic. freewebnøvel.coɱ

He reached out his hand towards her and waved it in front of her face. But she didn’t react to it at all.

"Wendy! Can you see me, Wendy?" Michael yelled in shock.

Suddenly, he recalled what the doctor told him about the potential complications Wendy could have after waking up.

The doctor also mentioned that there could be a terrible outcome.

"Did she... lose her sight?"

Wendy’s head was still spinning like crazy after waking up and her muscles were still sore.

However, her brain blocked out all the physical discomfort she was feeling after hearing what Michael said. His words ’can you see me’, consumed her thoughts.

Wendy slightly raised her hands and looked down, yet she couldn’t see anything.

She panicked and waved her hands wildly, trying to hold on to anyone standing or sitting beside her. Earnestly, she asked, "Did you really turn on the light? Are you lying to me?"

"Wendy..." Michael was now certain that she had lost her sight, which was unbelievable to him. fгeewebnovёl.com

He held Wendy’s hand tightly and took a deep breath, trying to calm himself down.

He knew that he should be the beacon of hope for Wendy at this moment.

"Listen to me, Wendy," Michael said. "You’ve been in a coma for days, so it’s normal that you wouldn’t able to see anything. Have some more rest. You will see again."

"So, what you’re saying is... I’m blind?" Wendy couldn’t believe what she heard as her hand fell out of Michael’s and onto her bed.

"It will be temporary. You’ve been in a horrible car accident that sent you into a coma for days. It’s not that big of an issue to lose your sight for a while," Michael tried to console her.

"Besides, even if it’s not temporary, medical technology these days is advanced enough to fix your eyes. Trust me, Wendy."

"Trust you?" Wendy tried to turn her head toward where the voice was coming from.

Suddenly, she asked, "Who are you? Do I know you?"

Michael’s heart suffered another blow.

’She should’ve at least recognized my voice even though she can’t see,’ he thought.

Before Michael could say anything, the doctor arrived.

"Would you mind stepping outside for a bit, Mr. Lucas?" The doctor politely asked Michael. "I’m going to run a quick check on Mrs. Lucas."

He nodded and fought back the urge to continue the conversation with Wendy. He grabbed the doctor’s hand as he spoke, "Please find a way to cure her."

He didn’t wait to inform the others and called them the second he left the ward to tell them that Wendy had woken up.

Regardless of her condition, the bottom line was Wendy was still alive, which was all that mattered to him.

The group arrived in no time, only to see Michael squatting outside Wendy’s room and covering his head with his hands, looking depressed.

"Has Wendy woken up?" Mary was the first person to ask him.

Michael looked up after hearing her voice and nodded at her.

"Then why are you..." Mary was about to ask him why he still looked upset, but before she could finish her sentence, she got the feeling that something bad had happened.

"How’s my mommy?" Jake asked worriedly.

"Let’s wait until the doctor comes out," Michael said. He was hoping that the loss of her vision was only temporary.

Everyone became anxious seeing Michael’s reaction.

The doctor didn’t come out of the room until a long time had passed.

The doctor took off his mask and said solemnly, "Mrs. Lucas is experiencing some lingering effects from the coma..."

Everyone became deeply depression after hearing what the doctor said.

"What on earth happened?" Mrs. Lucas hit the floor with her cane, worriedly.

"The car accident caused tremendous pressure on Mrs. Lucas’s brain. Although our surgery was a huge success, the pressure still damaged her vision," the doctor said.

"Which means Mrs. Lucas is currently blind."

"Blind?" After hearing the doctor’s words, Mary struggled to steady herself as she stumbled.

The doctor then continued, "But there is no need to be worried. The loss of sight is only going to be temporary."

"Doctor, can you tell us the whole situation all at once? You almost gave us a heart attack!" Jake said while looking up at the doctor with a straight face.
