Chapter 153: Is Mr. Lewis Looking For A Stepmother For Your Daughter?

"Wendy, this child is?" Leah’s greeting had raised many questions in Michael.

He knew that Jake was Wendy’s child. But why was this little girl calling her mummy too?

Could it be that the boy that Wendy brought back to Lake City wasn’t her child after all?

Instead, this little girl was her real daughter?

Or could it be Wendy had another child other than Jake? But looking at them, both seemed to be of the same age.

It couldn’t be that Wendy got married and gave birth to another child immediately after Jake was born.

Michael was totally confused by what he was seeing.

Wendy smiled and carried Leah into her arms. She calmly explained, "This is Todd’s daughter. She is also my goddaughter. Since young, she has been calling me ’mummy’. It has become a habit now. Am I right, Leah?"

Although Leah had no idea what Wendy was talking about, she nodded her head in agreement.

Todd continued to explain, "Jake and Leah are of the same age. Both of them enjoy each other’s company so much so that I asked Corrine to be her godmother. By the way, may I know who are you?"

"Michael Lucas." His tone was obviously unfriendly. He was sizing Todd up, trying to figure out the man that’s standing before him.

Todd politely reached out his hand to shake Michael’s. "Oh it’s Mr. Lucas! How do you do? I’ve heard so much about you. My name is Todd Lewis, the CEO of TS Design Group."

Michael shook Todd’s hand briefly and let go.

"Todd Lewis?" Michael may not be in the design industry but he had certainly heard of Todd’s name before. "The one that came out of HG Enterprise?"

Todd nodded his head. Michael suddenly felt very threatened.

Wendy was in HG Enterprise for the past five years.

This meant that they had known each other for a long time.

Michael took another look at Todd and sized him up again.

Wait a minute, he had a child!

Michael heaved a sigh of relief. He then asked suspiciously, "Mr. Lewis is here for business or leisure? How come I don’t see Mrs. Lewis with you?"

"I’m here for business," replied Todd.

"Brought your daughter along for a business trip?" Michael noticed that Todd evaded his second question so he asked again, "Why didn’t you bring Mrs. Lewis along to have fun together?

Both Todd and Wendy knew where Michael was going when he repeated his question about Mrs. Lewis again.

Wendy stepped in, "I’m sure Mr. Lucas has more important things to do. We also have plans. We shall make a move first."

"I don’t have anything important today," retorted Michael immediately, "I have always wanted to meet Mr. Lewis. Since he is here in Lake City, I must be a good host to him."

Without giving them a chance to raise objections, Michael pointed to a direction and said, "There is a restaurant not far from here. The food is quite good. Let me get my assistant to make a reservation immediately."

Todd looked at Wendy, wanting to check her thoughts about this.

Wendy naturally didn’t want to have lunch with Michael.

There was no way they could enjoy their meal with him around. But she knew that Michael was determined to come along with them.

If she continues to resist him, she had no idea what he might do.

"Why don’t you take my car, Mr. Lewis? We can have a good talk and see if we can explore any business opportunity together." Michael issued the invitation again.

Todd couldn’t reject him again. It would be unbefitting to their positions as CEO if he kept refusing him.

Besides, his company, MC Group, was really a profitable company. frёewebnoѵēl.com

They were moving in the same business circle. It wouldn’t be wise to make an enemy out of him.

Finally, he agreed and got into Michael’s car.

Todd had wanted to sit at the backseat but Michael pointed to the front. He smiled sarcastically, "I think the passenger seat is more suitable for you. We can talk easier this way."

Todd agreed and got onto the passenger seat.

Michael even reminded him to put on his safety belt before driving off.

Wendy held the children on each of her sides, but her gaze was fixed on the two men. Would they be alright together?

Michael said he wanted to be a good host to Todd. But they didn’t even know each other beforehand. She couldn’t help but read more into his actions.

Michael saw Wendy holding on to the children. He turned to Todd and asked, "Aren’t you going to bring your daughter along?"

Todd glanced at Leah, shook his head and answered, "It’s ok. Let her play with Jake.

Both of them are best friends for the longest time. It had been a few months since they saw each other. Let them catch up."

Michael raised his eyebrows, nodded his head without a word.

He called out to Wendy, "We will go over first. You and the children can follow behind my car."

Wendy didn’t reply but he took it that she understood.

Once they got onto the road, Michael called his assistant, Mr. York to make the booking.

After hanging up, Michael asked casually, "What is your daughter’s name? She looks quite adorable and smart.

"Leah Lewis." Todd was caught off guard by the question.

Michael had a pair of son and daughter but he had no idea at all.

Todd couldn’t help but feel sorry for Michael.

"Leah Lewis ..." Michael muttered her name under his breath. "Nice name. But other children usually stick to their dads but your daughter sticks to her godmother instead?"

Todd was stunned by the question. But he kept his composure and laughingly replied, "As I said, Jake and Leah are of the same age. They always play together. Since they’ve been separated for a while, isn’t it normal for her to stick to her godmother and godbrother more?"

"That’s true. By the way, can I know who is your wife?" asked Michael.

This was the third time he raised the question about Todd’s wife.

It looked like Todd had to answer this question somehow. freёwebnovel.com

Michael’s motive was very simple.

All he wanted to know was that Todd had a wife and that would put his mind at ease.

If Todd didn’t have a wife, Michael would be very worried. They knew each other for so long, plus the fact that Leah seemed to love Wendy a lot. It would be a disadvantage to Michael.

Pursing his lips, Todd replied, "I’m not married."

Todd could have lied to Michael that he was married.

But he didn’t want to do so.

Besides, if Michael had wanted to find out about his marital status, it would be easy for him.

There was no point in trying to deceive him.

Michael tightened his grip on the steering wheel. He didn’t like Todd’s answer.

Frowning, Michael wanted to verify, "Not married? Then Leah is?"

"Ah ... she was the result of my fling in my younger days," answered Todd sheepishly, making up the story as he went along, "I was drunk and made a mistake. So Leah came along."

"Then where is the mother now?" Michael persisted Todd looked at Michael, showing his irritation, "Don’t you think you are overly concern about my private life?"

Of course Michael was concerned.

Todd and Wendy were so close.

She even brought her son to the airport to fetch him.

With that kind of closeness, of course he would be concerned.

Michael quickly explained, "We were just chatting ..."

"Since we are chatting, let me also find out more about your private life," Todd asked smilingly, "Are you married?"

"Yes ..." Michael instinctively checked his rearview mirror to ensure Wendy’s car was following. He continued, "I even have a son, almost the same age as your daughter. And your daughter loves to play with him. Maybe we can consider matchmaking them."

Michael thought of Leah. She was so adorable and lovable.

Suddenly, it dawned upon him where he had met her before.

It was at the airport in Rheinsville City.

He knocked into a child in his hurry to get to Wendy. That child was Leah.

Since he was in a frenzy, he didn’t pay much attention to the child.

Were both Wendy and Todd at the airport at that time?

So the real reason for Wendy to return to Rheinsville City was to see Todd? But why didn’t she meet up with him? Was it because she knew he was following her?

Or, was it just a coincidence? Todd was there at the airport but he wasn’t fetching Wendy. Michael’s thoughts were in a mess.

To say it was just a coincidence would be too far-fetched.

Todd was there to fetch Wendy when she arrived at Rheinsville City.

Wendy went to fetch Todd when he came to Lake City. Michael was getting more worried about their closeness.

"Do you mean to say that Corrine is your wife?" Todd laughed out loud. "You must be joking. I heard that Corrine looks a lot like your wife. But that’s about it. To the best of my knowledge, Corrine is not married, just like me. Even if you like Corrine, you can’t go around sputtering nonsense."

"I seem to detect some enmity in what you are saying." Michael retorted. "Is Mr. Lewis looking for a stepmother for your daughter?"

Todd was amused by his response.

He didn’t reply him. Instead, he put out his hand out of the car to enjoy the breeze.

He took a deep breath and commented, "The air in Lake City is not bad."

The more Todd evaded the topic, the more suspicious Michael became. He was quite sure that Todd’s motive towards Wendy was not pure.

Did he think that just because he’s single with a daughter and Wendy had a son, he stood a chance to be together with Wendy?

Fat hope!

The more he thought, the angrier he got. He took a sharp turn at a bend.

Todd wasn’t paying attention and knocked his head against the seat.

"Oops, sorry. I was too focused on our conversation that I didn’t notice the bend," Michael apologised without much sincerity.

"Then for the sake of our safety, let’s stop chatting," retorted Todd.

The car became quiet.

Very soon, they reached the restaurant.

After parking the car, Todd and Michael walked towards the restaurant.

Wendy and the two children had also arrived and were walking towards them.

She took a look at them and was relieved that there was nothing unusual about them. She was worried that they would get into a fight during the journey.

Michael was such an overbearing and unreasonable man.

If he had suspected there’s something going on between Todd and her, he won’t bother to find out the truth.

When he had suspected Christian and her were having an affair, things were really ugly.

No matter how much Wendy tried to explain, he won’t listen at all.

Christian was different from Todd. Todd was just in Lake City for business. If he got into trouble with Michael because of her, it would be so unfair for him.

Todd waved to Leah and called out, "Leah, come over here."

Leah gazed up at Wendy. As soon as Wendy let go of her hand, she ran over to Todd.

Poor Michael. He was still unaware that the girl that Todd was carrying was his daughter.
