Chapter 152: Can You Not Be So Unreasonable?

Corrine knew that there was only one person whose car plate was all eights. It could only be Michael.

In fact, she had seen this car before.

Usually, Michael wouldn’t drive this car out because it drew too much attention. He usually used another car with a normal car plate for work. But why was he using this car to follow her? Did he think that she would not notice him?

Michael was in a rush to get breakfast for Corrine in the morning. He simply took the first car that was in the way. He hadn’t thought that he would be following Corrine all the way to the airport.

"The owner of this car shouldn’t be an ordinary person, right?" Todd naturally had no idea who the owner was. He analyzed with a frown,

"Perhaps I think too much."

No matter where, to own a car with such a unique car plate, this person must be really rich and influential.

There was no reason for someone like that to follow them, right?

Most importantly, he was making it very obvious that he was following them.

"It’s Michael Lucas," Corrine stated plainly. "The car belongs to him."

"Michael Lucas?!" Todd knew who he was. He met him at the airport back in Rheinsville City.

Just that Michael didn’t know who Todd was.

Corrine muttered a ’yes’ and decided, "I better send you to the hotel first."

"Why is he following you?" Michael asked in a concerned tone. "Why don’t you go and settle your stuff first? We are not in a hurry."

Todd was worried that Corrine might not be able to handle Michael alone.

From the rearview mirror, Corrine noticed that Michael’s car was still following her.

This was definitely not a coincidence.

Corrine sped up and Michael did the same.

Very soon, they reached the hotel.

Corrine got off the car and pretended that she wasn’t aware of Michael’s car at all.

She opened the boot of the car.

Todd’s assistant quickly rushed forward to take out the luggage.

Corrine forced a smile on her face and said to Todd, "Go ahead and put your things down. I will be here waiting for you. I will bring you for a meal after this."

She had originally planned to go up together with Todd. freёwebnoѵel.com

Since Michael was here, she should meet with him.

Todd understood what she meant. He nodded his head but still asked worriedly, "How about I go with you?"

"Don’t worry. He won’t do anything to me," Corrine assured Todd giving him a pat on the shoulder and tried to smile at him.

Leah came by and took Corrine’s hand.

The warmth she felt from the little hand made her shake in her decision for a moment.

She bent down and looked at Leah in the eyes.

"Leah, you go with Uncle Todd to the hotel first. Later mummy will bring all of you out for a good meal, ok?"

"Huh?" Leah stared at her mum, feeling a little confused. "You mean I have to go with Uncle Todd? I don’t want. I want to be with Mummy!"

Corrine reached out to comb Leah’s hair back in place. She whispered gently, "Go with Uncle Todd to put the luggage down. Very soon, you can come down to meet me again."

Leah folded her arms and sulked. She was obviously not happy with the instructions that her mum gave.

She had travelled so far to Lake City just to be with her mum. She didn’t want to be apart from her, not even for a second.

Corrine saw the tears in Leah’s eyes. She too couldn’t bear to be apart from her.

Todd reached out and carried Leah into his arms. "Be good, Leah. I will carry you up to the room. Once we have put the luggage down, we will come back down for mummy, ok?

"But Mummy..." Leah looked at Corrine with teary eyes.

Jake saw that Leah was so pitiful, he offered, "How about I go up with you?"

He signaled to Todd to put her down and he did.

Jake held on to Leah’s hands and explained, "I need to use the toilet. Let’s go up together to the hotel room so that I can pee."

Michael saw the man alighting from Corrine’s car. He tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

He had no idea why he had followed them all the way here. But he knew that he was boiling with anger.

His instincts told him that Corrine’s relationship with this man was not that simple.

Corrine didn’t just wake up early to fetch him. She even let him sit in the passenger seat.

Michael saw the man bringing the rest up to the hotel, leaving Corrine behind.

He wondered why Corrine didn’t follow along.

He had an urge to confront her on the identity of the man. But he knew that at this time, he had no right to question her.

Besides, how could he explain why he was there?

Michael had thought too much. He didn’t know that he was already discovered by Corrine long ago.

Corrine’s smile disappeared the moment Todd and the rest went out of sight. Her face was replaced with a cool look.

She turned around and walked towards Michael’s car.

Michael saw that Corrine was coming towards him. He quickly lowered his face lest Corrine saw him.

The next moment, Michael heard a knock on his car window. It was Corrine.

When he saw her, he knew there was no way of escape. He lowered down the window.

"What a coincidence, Corrine," Michael said awkwardly.

Corrine folded her arms, with a stern look and said, "I think Mr. Lucas needs to give me a reasonable explanation why you have been following me."

"Well, I was just ...." Michael couldn’t come up with a good reason. "That’s right, I followed you here."

Since the truth was out, he might as well tell the whole truth. "I went to the market early in the morning to get you your favourite breakfast. When I was there to deliver the food, I saw you leaving in your car. I was curious about where you were going so I followed you. I didn’t know you were going to the airport to fetch people."

Fearing that Corrine wouldn’t believe his story, he took up the breakfast that was still left on the seat to show her.

The packaging did prove that it belonged to the shop in the market.

Corrine had mixed feelings after hearing Michael’s explanation.

She pursed her lips, not sure how to respond.

In the past, she would have lost her temper and given him a piece of her mind. But now, she knew what happened five years ago wasn’t his fault.

The hatred she felt for the past five years had dissipated. She no longer bore grudges towards him.

After all, he woke up early to get her breakfast. His intention was good.

It would seem unreasonable of her if she were to pick a fight with him now.

"Is that ... your friend?" Michael couldn’t help but ask.

"Yes," answered Corrine casually.

"Why didn’t I meet him before?" Michael asked cautiously.

Corrine knew exactly what he was asking.

She paused for a moment and answered, "Michael, let’s be open with each other.

I’ve thought about many things for the past two days. I know what you are trying to do. You want us to be reconciled. But to me, I ..."

Michael didn’t let her finish her sentence. He interrupted, "We are in a carpark. I don’t think it is an appropriate place to discuss such matters here."

Actually, he was afraid of what Corrine was about to say next.

He saw that she wanted to continue.

So he quickly got off the car and changed the topic, "Since your friends are here, let me give all of you a treat. Treat it as a welcome for them to Salt City."

Corrine snapped, "Michael, we are not related anymore. We are not even friends."

Looking at him now, Corrine felt a little helpless.

"What do you mean we are not related?" Michael tried to correct her, "Wendy, you are my wife."

"You are my wife." This statement was a painful reminder to Wendy.

"Let’s get things right. I had asked for a divorce countless times in the past five years. I’ve drawn up the divorce papers for you to sign before I left," Wendy said angrily, "Our marriage had already ended five years ago."

"I didn’t sign the papers. And we didn’t go through the process at the Civil Affairs Bureau. So legally, we are still married." Michael shook his head, not willing to accept what Wendy was saying.

"Even though you didn’t sign the papers, I am no longer the old Wendy Steward."

Wendy stared at Michael and told him honestly, "Wendy Steward died in the sea five years ago. I am now Corrine Swift. Can’t you understand?"

"No I can’t!" Michael gripped Wendy’s hands tightly, refusing to let go. "I don’t care if you are Wendy or Corrine, you are still my wife."

Michael didn’t mean to be so agitated.

He had meant to give Wendy time to cool down first and think things through. But what he didn’t expect was the man that showed up from nowhere today.

This man was the reason why he couldn’t just sit back and do nothing.

"Let go of me!" Wendy tried to push Michael away but to no avail. She got angry and shouted, "Michael Lucas, can you not be so unreasonable?

At that moment, Michael saw disappointment in Wendy’s eyes.

He let go of her hands suddenly, as though he had just been electrocuted.

Admittedly, his greatest fear was to have Wendy being disappointed with him.

Wendy saw no point in continuing the conversation with Michael. He didn’t look like he was going to relent.

Wendy thought since she was going to leave Lake City for good after the board of directors had come to a decision, there was no point to keep trying to reason with Michael.

With this thought in mind, she turned to leave.

Just then, she saw Todd walking towards them with Leah in his arms and Jake holding his hands.

Todd was concerned that Michael might give Wendy troubles so he quickly put down the luggages in the hotel room and rushed down.

Upon seeing Wendy, Leah broke out into a big grin and reached out for her,

"Mummy ..."

Wendy, Todd and Jake stiffened when they heard Leah’s greeting.

That greeting got the attention of Michael.

Leah noticed the change of expressions around her. But she wasn’t sure what she did wrong. She looked innocently at Wendy, unsure of what to do. Should she still reach for her mum or should she draw back?

"Mummy?" Michael walked towards the little girl that Todd was carrying with a scowl on his face.

He couldn’t get a good look at the girl from where he was standing. But now that he took a second look at her, he found her familiar.

Where did he meet her before?

Michael just couldn’t recall.

Todd whispered into Leah’s ears, "Remember you can’t greet her as mummy ..."

Leah blinked her eyes. She seemed to recall something. So she bit her lips and kept quiet.

Before coming to Lake City, Todd already warned Leah that she was not supposed to greet Wendy as mummy. She should greet her as Aunty Wendy. She couldn’t understand why Uncle Todd would ask such a thing of her. But Todd told her that if she didn’t obey him, he wouldn’t bring her along to Lake City.

For the sake of meeting her mum, Leah agreed to do what Todd asked. But the moment she saw Wendy, she was so excited that she forgot all about the agreement.

Now that Todd reminded her, she knew what she had to do. But to greet Wendy as Aunty was too much to bear for Leah. She was after all her mum.
