Chapter 122: Let Her Go
By the time Wendy got home from work, Zess had already prepared dinner.
Wendy was in a good mood because of Michael’s incident.
Jake saw that Wendy did not appear to be out of control like last night and was relieved. However, after dinner, Wendy received another call, this time, from the grandmother. With Grandmother calling around this time, Wendy could guess what she was calling for.
"Wendy..."A familiar sound came through the phone.
"It is me, Mrs. Lucas," Wendy replied in a low voice.
"Did you know that Michael was admitted into hospital?" said Grandmother while sighing.
If Wendy said she knew but didn’t go to the hospital, Grandmother would be disappointed. Grandmother had always hoped that she and Michael would be well together. But if she said she didn’t know, that seemed too deliberate. After all, Mr. York had already called her.
Regarding such a serious matter, it was unreasonable for her to say that she didn’t know.
Pursing her lips, Wendy said truthfully, "I know."
Hearing Wendy’s answer, Grandmother sighed, "Could you come to see Michael at the hospital for my sake?"
When Mr. York called, Wendy could justly refuse him. But when the grandmother called, Wendy didn’t know how to refuse.
The grandmother had just passed her eightieth birthday, and the next day her grandson had an accident and was hospitalized.
The mood must be bad.
Grandmother would be sad if Wendy rejected
her once again. At this time, Wendy should comfort the grandmother. But, Wendy thought, they probably didn’t know that Michael had been injured by her.
Even if Mrs. Lucas were not to seek revenge on her, the other Lucases would look for her. However, this matter would be known to the Lucas family eventually.
"Wendy?" Seeing her not answering Grandmother said, "I’m currently in the hospital, and Michael’s situation is not optimistic. The doctor said that his wound infection was serious. He drank too much alcohol last night. Not only did he have a wound infection and a high fever, but he was also poisoned by alcohol. His life is still in danger."
Wendy had mixed feelings when she heard the words ’life in danger’.
When Mr. York called, he did not say that his condition was so severe. If it really had been because she hit Michael yesterday, causing him to die...
Pursing her lips, Wendy finally agreed, "I’ll be there soon."
"Very well, I will ask someone to send you the exact address."
After hanging up the phone, Wendy put on a coat and rushed to the hospital.
...
After arriving at the hospital, Wendy went directly to the ward.
Michael was lying on the hospital bed, his face a little pale.
Mrs. Lucas saw Wendy, took her hand, and whispered, "Wendy, I knew you would come."
If it weren’t for the grandmother calling, Wendy had no plan of coming to the hospital.
Seeing Michael on the hospital bed, Wendy asked in a low voice, "How is his situation?" freēwēbηovel.c૦m
"He is not in good condition." Grandmother sighed and said, "The doctor said he was hit by a car, and not sure how it happened. I asked him to see you off last night, and I thought he went back with you. Unexpectedly, I received the news in the afternoon that he had been admitted to the hospital. Wendy, do you have any idea how this happened?"
Michael was hit in his house. Even if Wendy denied doing it, they would eventually find out when they go through the CCTV system footage.
The investigation might have already begun.
Therefore, she didn’t intend to deny it from the beginning. She lowered her head slightly and said apologetically: "I’m sorry Mrs. Lucas, it was me who hit him."
When Mrs. Lucas heard the news, she was astonished. She would never have thought that Wendy would try to run Michael over. Mrs. Lucas looked at Michael lying on the hospital bed and then at Winnie who was seated by his side.
Wendy had spoken softly earlier on. Winnie did not like Wendy in the first place so she did not bother to listen in on their conversation. Hence, it was unlikely that Winnie had overheard anything.
Although Mrs. Lucas was shocked, her first reaction was to pull Wendy along with her to leave the ward.
Once outside, Mrs. Lucas let go of Wendy’s wrist. She looked up at Wendy disappointedly and asked, "Was what you said earlier true?"
"Yes," Wendy nodded.
"Wendy, why did you do this?" Mrs. Lucas stomped her feet as she could not comprehend the reason behind it. "Is it because of the issue yesterday with Yonina?"
Honestly speaking, the matter yesterday was indeed the trigger. But Wendy’s need for vengeance on Michael had accumulated over the years. Even if it was not for Yonina, things would have gotten out of control someday anyway.
"Grandmother, I’m sorry." Wendy bowed towards Mrs. Lucas. Wendy owed her an apology but she did not regret her actions last night. Michael owed her way more than this.
"I have been hoping that you were still alive and could come back to the Lucas family. But I did not expect that you would hate Michael so much when you came back." Mrs. Lucas shook her head and sighed. "Wendy, Michael has been atoning for his mistakes for the past 5 years. He knew he was indebted to you so he has been doing voluntary work in your name. Disregarding Yonina, while you were gone, there was a period when I had tried to persuade him to find another wife. He rejected my suggestions, saying you were his only wife for this lifetime. Putting aside how he treated you before, he really loves you now. The issue with Yonina was just an accident. Neither of us knew that Yonina would be there. If Michael was really into Yonina, they Would have been together long ago."
It was not the first time Wendy heard these words. Mr. York said it to her as well when he was trying to convince Wendy to come to the hospital. It seemed to Wendy that everyone was on Michael’s side and Wendy had become the heartless villain.
Wendy scoffed. She scoffed at herself for being pitiful and pathetic.
"Grandmother, I don’t think I should be here at all. I’ll be off." There was no point for Wendy to stay any longer at the hospital, with Mrs. Lucas not being able to understand her standpoint. "Grandmother, take care of yourself."
"Where do you think you are going?"
Wendy turned around when she heard Winnie. The rage and hatred in her voice were distinct. Winnie stomped over and grabbed Wendy’s right wrist forcefully. Before Wendy could react, Winnie raised her other hand and slapped Wendy.
Wendy laid her left hand over her cheek.
Seeing that Winnie was going to slap her again, she reacted by raising her arm and blocking the second attack in time.
"Wendy Stewart! How dare you try to run Michael over!" Winnie yelled, her breathing shallow from the anger. "It is an honor for a woman like you to be able to marry into the Lucas family. If you were dead five years ago, why are you back now? And you hit my son with your car when you reappeared in our lives. What trouble the Lucas family got themselves into to have such a cursed fate with you in our family."
After being blocked by Wendy, Winnie reached for her collar with both hands and shook her hard. "I’m telling you, if anything happens to Michael, you will pay for it with your life!"
Winnie had just found out the truth because she had sent someone to investigate the accident yesterday. A moment ago, she got a phone call and the informant mentioned that Wendy was the one who hit Michael and that Michael had gotten up from the ground after the accident, walked out of the Lucas mansion, and his whereabouts after that were unknown.
Wendy was unable to keep her footing from Winnie’s vigorous shaking.
Mrs. Lucas could not bear to watch Wendy being interrogated like that so she broke her silence, "Let go of her, Winnie." She was caught in a dilemma. It was her grandson on one hand and her favorite granddaughter-in-law on the other. It pained her to know that Wendy was the culprit behind the accident that left her grandson lying in the ward, not knowing whether or not he Would awaken soon.
However, thinking back to what happened five years ago, she could not blame Wendy entirely, since Michael had let Wendy down back then.
"Mother, it is her. Your favorite granddaughter-in-law was the one who ran your grandson over!" Winnie was bewildered as she could not believe her ears when Mrs. Lucas spoke up for Wendy. "Are you siding with her now? Mother, don’t you care for your own grandson? The one lying in bed in the ward now is the eldest grandson of the Lucas family! If anything happens to him, what will become of the Lucas family? How do you expect me to live then?"
"Let go of her..." A weak voice came from the ward. Michael laid his hand on his chest as he coughed a couple of times. He leaned against the door frame, looking pale. "Let her go."
Winnie rushed over to support him when she saw that he was awake. "Why did you get out of bed? You should be recuperating and not moving around too much."
Michael was awakened by the commotion in the hallway. He still could not accept the fact that it was Wendy who had hit him the night before.
The woman he had been waiting for for the past five years drove and hit him intentionally.
Previously, she had closed the door on him while his fingers were still in the door frame. Of course, this incident could not be compared to the previous in terms of severity. He thought Wendy came back to Lake City because she was angry. But after the accident yesterday, he knew that it was Wendy’s hatred that had brought her back here.
All this time that he had been trying to woo Wendy back, he believed that Wendy would forgive him eventually and they would get back together. But he was wrong, right from the beginning. He underestimated the hatred Wendy had for him and overestimated his ability to charm her.
Five years had passed. Michael could not accept the fact that Wendy was no longer in love with him. He had been in a terrible mood last night, so he went to a bar for some drinks after he had picked himself up from the ground.
He was drunk when he left the bar and he was not sure where he went after that. That was the last thing he remembered before he was woken up by the scolding Winnie was giving Wendy. It did not matter how Wendy felt towards him, but he could not bear to see Wendy suffer.
Michael closed his eyes as he felt slightly suffocated. He tightened his grip on the door.
He looked at Wendy and gave a faint smile. "You may go, Wendy..." Michael said in a devastated tone. Deep down, he knew it would be impossible for them to get back together like how they were in the past. It would be a burden for Wendy if he continued to pester her.
Five years ago, he had caused her many heartbreaks. Now, he did not want Wendy to be hurt anymore.
"Michael, did you know that she was the one who hit you yesterday?" Winnie shook in anger, seeing how both Michael and Mrs. Lucas were siding with Wendy. What had the world become? Why was her son so forgiving toward the culprit who injured him?
"Mother, I said, let her go." Michael’s anxious tone caused him to cough uncontrollably. His body swayed as he could not support himself.
Wendy tightened her grip on her bag as she stepped forward to reach over to Michael. But after her first step, Mrs. Lucas walked over to Michael and helped him into the ward with Winnie on his other side.
