Chapter 146: I will not let another demon take what I cherish.

"I won’t ask anymo—"

"I am not leaving."

Lucian spoke gently as he placed his hand on top of hers. She stared at him for a second, then slowly let go.

Lucian reached into his pocket and took out a small black object. It looked like a flat coin that had some circles within circles carved on it, each circle with tiny symbols inside them. Evelyn looked at the coin. It was something she had never seen in her life.

"What is that?"

She questioned curiously.

"An artifact."

"What does it do?"

Lucian placed it on the floor near the center of the room.

"It creates a boundary."

"A boundary?"

Evelyn sat properly.

"Yeah."

Lucian nodded as he pressed the coin with two fingers. Violet energy moved from his fingers into the carved lines and the artifact buzzed a little, and Evelyn felt something in the room shift, something she couldn’t exactly point to. She just felt something was different.

Lucian stood up and explained.

"It’s a boundary inside which demonic energy signatures do not leak out. People outside will not sense anything unless physical damage happens or the energy itself crosses the boundary."

"Demonic Energy signatures...?"

Evelyn frowned.

"Are we hiding something from them?"

She didn’t understand much, but she could tell Lucian was trying to isolate her. Honestly, if it had been someone other than Lucian, Evelyn would have panicked. She would rather trust a group she hired to protect her than a single person but...

When it came to Lucian—

Her doubt shifted towards the group itself.

Were... Alaric and the others not on their side...?

Her frown deepened as she looked towards the door.

"Lucian, what’s happening?"

She questioned.

Lucian walked back to the bed and sat down, this time sitting straighter. He stared at her for a long moment, which made Evelyn even more suspicious.

She did not like a silent Lucian.

Then—

"Last night, during your concert, I saw something."

Lucian spoke directly.

"Is that the reason you left...?"

"Yes."

Lucian nodded.

"When you sang, the crowd reacted to you."

"Reacted to me...?"

"Yes, and it wasn’t the normal reaction a star gets from her fans, it was more. So much more that it manifested physically."

"What...?"

"You gather Energy of Desire from the crowd when you sing."

"I gather... energy?"

"Lots of it. So much that if a demon like me had access to that energy, it could fill my reserves hundreds of times."

Evelyn’s eyes widened in surprise.

"How...?"

She asked.

"I don’t do anything..."

"I know, and that’s why it’s dangerous."

Lucian nodded with a solemn look on his face.

"According to Teacher Vivienne, you have a special physique, someone who can draw desire from groups without any rituals whatsoever, and because you do not need to spend any resources on rituals or other preparations, you can, in theory, gather energy from the entire world without cost. This is the reason you are being targeted."

"So this Orpheus person knows this as well...?"

"No, he probably does not."

Lucian shook his head.

"Then what’s the pro—"

Evelyn frowned in confusion, but Lucian interrupted her.

"Because it’s not Orpheus who is after you.

He is only a pawn."

Lucian’s face then turned solemn.

"The one after you is a Greater Incubus of the Court of Desire, Vaelrith."

"A... Greater Incubus...?"

Evelyn obviously had no idea who it was.

It sure sounded scary though.

"Like you?"

She asked.

"No."

Lucian shook his head.

"Not like me. I have Incubus Blood, but I am not Vaelrith. Vaelrith is an actual demon who lives in the Demon Realm."

"Hell?"

Lucian paused for a moment, then he nodded.

"Yes, something like Hell.

Even if we capture or kill Orpheus, it won’t end. Vaelrith will simply choose another pawn to do his bidding."

"And what if we kill Vaelrith...?"

Evelyn asked innocently and Lucian—

He shook his head again.

"We cannot."

Evelyn blinked at those words.

"Even you cannot?"

She seemed surprised, as if the notion that Lucian could not defeat someone was something her mind couldn’t comprehend.

To her, Lucian was the strongest.

But...

"Let alone me, even if our entire team worked together, we still wouldn’t be able to kill him."

"What...?"

Evelyn couldn’t believe it.

"Demons live in the Demonic Realm. They can influence our world through hosts, they can even possess a Host’s body to interfere directly, but killing those Hosts doesn’t mean we can kill the Demon possessing their body. The demon can simply choose another Host and descend again."

"Are you saying... it’s impossible to kill a demon?"

Evelyn frowned.

Lucian shook his head again.

"No, there are instances where demons can descend into our world in their real bodies. We can actually force a demon to descend into our world as well, it’s just that..."

"What?"

Evelyn narrowed her eyes.

"When demons descend with their true bodies, their powers are no longer limited."

"And? How strong are they?"

"Very strong."

Lucian answered with a solemn look on his face.

"A Greater Demon like Vaelrith is strong enough to wipe out a city before enough forces can be gathered to stop him. And these forces include other supernatural forces, not just humans, and even then, killing the demon for good isn’t guaranteed. The chances that he escapes with his life intact are high."

"A Greater Demon can... wipe out a city...?"

"If he descends with his True Body, yes."

Lucian nodded and Evelyn’s face turned pale.

"And such a being is... after me?"

"Yes."

Lucian nodded again, his face solemn as well.

"What do we do now...?"

Evelyn questioned.

"If you continue to protect me, won’t you be in danger as well? Won’t Vaelrith start targeting you too?"

"That’s what you are worried about?"

"Answer my question."

Evelyn spoke strictly, but Lucian—

"It does not matter."

He shook his head.

"I am not scared of him."

"But he’s stron—"

"I will be stronger."

The violet light in Lucian’s eyes became more intense.

"I will become so strong that Vaelrith would never descend in my presence, then, I will force his descent and rip him apart limb by limb.

I will not let another demon take what I cherish.

Not this time.
