You went against direct orders."
Sarah spoke with a solemn, almost angry look on her face and for a moment, Lucian’s smile faded.

That’s when Elise walked towards them with her arms folded and questioned directly.
That made Lucian blink.

He chuckled.
Elise never talked to him unless she absolutely had to, so her talking right now was... indeed surprising.

Lucian looked at her, then at Sarah and he—

Sarah frowned.

Lucian answered casually but the reaction to his words was not casual, not one bit.
"Two... Fifth Veil Hosts?"
Sarah repeated as she stared at him in shock, Elise’s face lost some of its coldness as well.
"Yes."
Lucian nodded.
"They were on route two...?"
"Yep, the route we were supposed to take after I brought Evelyn to you."
Lucian nodded and the next instant, the two Enclave hunters gulped as they understood immediately.
An ambush.

Sure, Sarah and Elise were strong, but they wouldn’t even dream of winning that battle, no, it wasn’t even a battle.
It was straight-up execution.
"Fifth Veil Hosts..."

Lucian held the pose for a second or two longer, thinking they didn’t see it, but after they still didn’t react, he slowly lowered his hand and sighed.
"Tough crowd."
Sarah ignored him.
"You captured two Fifth Veil Hosts?"
She asked as she stepped closer.
"I had help."
"Who?"
Lucian looked almost offended.
"Who else but our valiant commander?"
"You moved with Commander Ashcroft?"
"You think I would go there alone? I am brave, not foolish."
Lucian placed a hand over his chest.
"You created a new route, handed Miss Starling to us, then went back to Alaric?"
"Yes."
"Because you figured out the real trap?"
"Yes."
Elise watched him silently.
Lucian shrugged.
"Their plan was to separate me and the captain by keeping him busy with the wolves. So I figured we should not stay separated."
Then he smiled.
"It is like how the entire world wants you and your romantic partner to divorce because they are jealous of your bond, but your love remains strong."
Sarah’s mouth twitched.
Elise’s expression stiffened.
For a second, both women imagined Commander Ashcroft hearing those words, and they felt their bodies tremble.
Lucian walked past them as if he had not said anything strange.
"Anyways, I am going to the living room. I feel like collapsing somewhere expensive."
Sarah and Elise followed him inside.
The residence was quiet.
Evelyn’s ordinary bodyguards stood at different points around the hall and living room, they all glanced at Lucian but this time, none of them joked, none of them called him a pretty boy, not after everything they had seen today.
Sure, not all of them saw Lucian in action, but they still talked, they knew at least some of it and that alone was enough.
Lucian noticed their gaze and for now, he ignored that, the guards preferred that, as for Lucian, he entered the living room and dropped onto one of the couches with a long breath.

Sarah remained standing, Elise stood beside her.
"Where is Commander Ashcroft?"
Elise questioned.
"Enclave."
Lucian answered, leaning back on the couch.
"He took the Hosts there, said the interrogation wing would do their thing."
He answered, Sarah reacted to those words, since she had worked in that Wing, Lucian, on the other hand, only pouted.
"I wanted to be the one who talked to our new toy—friends."
The two women ignored that completely.
"What about the wolves? Did you capture any?"
Sarah asked, Lucian looked up.
"Hmm. I was told Clara captured the three Alaric knocked unconscious. She also found the two that chased me and Evelyn and handled them."
Sarah’s face did not change, Elise nodded as well, this made sense.
Lucian, on the other hand, smiled.
"She really is quite something, isn’t she? Handling two wolves alone."
Sarah looked at him.
"She’s a Voss. What did you expect?"
Lucian’s eyes shone at those words.
"What is a Voss anyways?"
He asked curiously.
He knew about the Ashcrofts because Vivienne told him about them, but Voss, he had only heard their name, he still didn’t know how exactly they were special.
Sarah and Elise looked at each other, then, Sarah turned back to Lucian and tried to answer but just then—
The door to Evelyn’s room opened and Lila stepped out, everyone turned to her, even Lucian’s posture changed.
Lila carefully closed the door behind her, as if even the sound might disturb the person inside.
"How is she?"
Sarah questioned.
Lucian needed the answer as well, that was part of the reason he came to the living room in the first place.
"Physically, Miss Starling is fine."
