Chapter 107: Chapter 107 The Trap Closes Around Samantha

Back in New York, Samantha accompanied Ryan on a trip to New Hope.

Oliver was with them as well.

In the lounge, Samantha smiled and said, "Why don’t you come over for dinner tonight? I’m planning to ask Ryan to come home with me."

A hint of shyness flashed across her face.

Oliver, ever the smooth talker, set down his teacup and chuckled.

"You two are practically meeting the parents. Why would I tag along and get in the way? I’d just be a third wheel."

Samantha couldn’t help laughing. "Not at all. It’s just dinner. My mom fell down the stairs yesterday, so I want to check on her."

"Is it serious?" Oliver asked.

"She has a hairline fracture in her leg. We need to find a good hospital and admit her for observation."

Oliver thought for a moment. "Peace Orthopedics has a good reputation. Why not take her there?"

At that, Samantha smiled faintly, amusement flickering in her eyes.

"Peace is probably still busy dealing with Mike’s incident. After all, Mr. Byrne is Peace Hospital’s crown prince, and G.S.’s clinical trials were conducted there. It’s a complicated situation."

In her opinion, she had already shown Peace and G.S. considerable leniency.

She hadn’t called the police.

She hadn’t filed a lawsuit.

Nor had she publicly damaged Peace’s reputation.

Although it involved medical malpractice, Peace still owed her a favor.

When G.S. eventually dismissed Rose and invited Samantha back into the project as a co-author, that would serve as compensation.

It would also smooth over the previous conflict involving Mike, who had vandalized Dean Leo Byrne’s office and offended him.

"Rose went to L.A. again with President Byrne," Samantha continued. "In my opinion, she’s already running on fumes. President Byrne has to consider the bigger picture. Funding and getting the drug approved are what really matter."

Oliver nodded.

He felt the situation was practically settled.

From Peace Hospital’s perspective, sacrificing someone like Rose—the most expendable member of the project—was the easiest solution.

Shaking his head, he sighed.

A strange sense of melancholy washed over him.

What had all those years of conflict achieved?

Rose had done everything she could to get rid of Samantha.

And now it seemed all her efforts had amounted to nothing.

Sooner or later, Samantha would be welcomed back into the project with great fanfare.

Samantha calmly took a sip of coffee.

She was in an excellent mood.

The new cardiovascular drug being developed by G.S. was incredibly valuable.

She was determined to have her name listed on the publication.

That achievement would become the stepping stone for her future career.

Just then, her phone rang. "I need to take this."

She stood and walked aside.

The incoming number was a landline.

Frowning, she answered. "Hello?"

"Ms. Samantha Hill, this is the New York police station. A copy of the complaint will be served to you today. Please ensure that you receive it."

As the caller explained the details, Samantha’s expression changed dramatically.

Peace Hospital and G.S. had jointly filed a lawsuit against her.

And they had submitted evidence.

Documentary footage.

Her pupils contracted.

A documentary?

Her heart skipped a beat.

She had completely forgotten about Diana’s filming.

The hidden cameras.

The behind-the-scenes footage.

Click.

The lounge door opened.

Ryan walked in.

Samantha turned toward him, her face pale.

"Ryan..."

Her voice trembled. "G.S. and Peace have filed a joint lawsuit against me."

Ryan looked up.

Oliver nearly jumped to his feet. "What?"

******

Rose hadn’t expected the documentary footage to capture a Columbia University graduate student.

Ten minutes before she entered Mike’s room, that student had gone in first.

Rose remembered her well.

The young woman was extremely close to Samantha.

She constantly defended her and practically idolized her.

The police quickly summoned her for questioning.

Terrified, the graduate student looked as though her entire future had collapsed.

"I don’t know anything," she said anxiously. "Mike is Ms. Hill’s younger brother. She was busy that day, so she asked me to check on him and bring him dinner."

Rose was silent for a long moment.

The situation was far more complicated than she had originally imagined.

Caleb laughed bitterly. "It seems everyone around her is just a tool."

The implication was obvious.

Rose frowned. "You’re saying Samantha orchestrated the entire thing herself?"

"Otherwise, how else could the dosage have been calculated so precisely?" Caleb replied coldly. "It was enough to make the situation look critical without actually endangering the child’s life. The timing was perfect—right before our drug launch, during G.S.’s funding round, and involving Peace Hospital."

His expression darkened. "She couldn’t accept being removed from the Columbia team and losing her chance at the project. So she manufactured a crisis, forcing her way back in and securing authorship and recognition."

At the same time, she had positioned herself as the victim.

By not calling the police.

By not filing charges.

By not making the matter public.

She made Peace Hospital feel indebted to her.

One move.

Several gains.

A perfect plan.

"Whether the graduate student is innocent or not," Rose said slowly, "we’ve already confirmed that Samantha’s personal connections allowed experimental chemicals to leave the lab without authorization. That alone created the opportunity for someone to exploit the loophole."

A cold smile appeared on her lips. "And if Samantha really is behind this..."

Her eyes turned icy. "Then both of their careers are finished."

For fame.

For academic achievements.

For recognition.

Samantha had used her own younger brother as a pawn.

Caleb shook his head. "She probably never imagined Diana was filming a documentary."

He had already pieced everything together.

Diana had explained how she worked.

To avoid interfering with research, she installed cameras before the team arrived and recorded remotely.

The cameras were so unobtrusive that people gradually forgot they existed.

Which was exactly why they captured the truth.

Rose glanced at the flawless clinical-trial report lying on the desk.

Then she shrugged. "Let’s hope she can handle the consequences."

After all, Samantha had been bold enough to use a top-tier institution like Peace Hospital as a stepping stone.

Caleb smiled. "It really is the definition of shooting yourself in the foot."

*****

That afternoon, Samantha called Caleb countless times.

He ignored every single call.

By evening, Rose had submitted the first phase of the experiment for review.

As she headed downstairs, someone stopped her.

Looking up, she saw Samantha waiting outside.

Judging by her appearance, she had been there for quite some time.

Rose didn’t even slow down.

She walked straight past her.

Biting her lip, Samantha grabbed Rose’s arm. "Can we talk?"

Rose shook her off immediately.

Her voice was full of impatience. "Are you here to beg or to give orders?"

She knew Samantha too well.

Even now, she still carried the same arrogance.

Samantha inhaled deeply. "I can’t reach President Byrne. He’s refusing to see me. Dean Byrne from Peace isn’t in New York either."

Her expression stiffened. "Rose, President Byrne favors you. Help me arrange a meeting."

The request tasted bitter.

Turning to Rose was the last thing she wanted.

But she had no choice.

G.S. was suing her.

If the truth came out—

If people discovered what she had done to her own brother—

Her career would be over.

Rose finally stopped walking.

A mocking smile spread across her face. "You’re actually ordering me around?"

She laughed. "Samantha, you framed me. And now you expect me to forget everything and clean up your mess?"

Her eyes were full of ridicule. "Have you lost your mind?"

Samantha’s expression darkened.

She knew Rose had always been sharp-tongued.

And when she wanted to hurt someone, her words were far more dangerous than any weapon.

"You need to understand something," Samantha said coldly. "You’re a member of the Hill family too. At the end of the day, we’re sisters. If this situation spirals out of control, it won’t benefit you either."

In Samantha’s eyes, Rose was still nothing more than a minor figure at G.S.

The fact that she had come personally was already generous enough.

Listening to her self-righteous reasoning, Rose couldn’t help laughing. "Your surname may be Hill," she said lightly, "but if this scandal explodes, the worst thing that happens is everyone finds out how you and your mother clawed your way into this family."

Her smile widened. "What exactly am I supposed to be afraid of?"

Samantha’s face darkened instantly.

Without thinking, she raised her hand.

As if intending to slap her.

Rose caught her wrist effortlessly.

Then shoved her backward.

Samantha stumbled several steps before regaining her balance.

Rose looked at her coldly.

Every word was crystal clear. "Congratulations, Miss Hill."

A dangerous smile curved her lips. "Once everything is verified and I win this lawsuit..."

She paused.

Then finished calmly: "You’re going to jail."
