Chapter 4: New Intern

{ THREE WEEKS LATER}

You: Uncle said it’s cancer, Henry. And I have just one year to live. Please call me back once you see this message. Love you.

To: Heartbeat.

27th, February, 2028.

Corrine’s polished fingers tapped on the screen of her latest Iphone as she read through her Dm’s with her Heartbeat. She leaned on the steering wheel of her car, her fingers wrapped around her chin in deep thought as she read the words over and over again.

It was already late March, April will be rolling in soon in just seven days. It was one of those days where she had to be up before seven thirty and be on her way to work.

Lin said there was a new intern that responded to their ads and he will be resuming today.

Rain fell against her windshield similar to the tiny drops of water from a closed tap.

She sighed, almost heaving as she read the next message.

You: Hi! Are you alright? You are yet to respond to my message. Must have been a great shock to you and I understand. But I need to see and discuss with you about our future, before I decide to move to Chicag—-

Corrine flinched when another call from her uncle assaulted her phone for the twelfth time this morning. There was a distant rumble of thunder as her hands trembled, while glaring at the screen of her phone, holding her breath until the call died.

Unanswered again.

Corrine tried not to cry yet as she turned her phone on again to continue reading the messages that broke her heart more than the news of dying soon.

You: —--Please, call me back once you see this, a reply to this text will be fine too. Just worried and I miss you so much, always.

15th, March, 2028.

Her heart raced at the time difference from her last message to this. He was truly her heartbeat in every way. Even in a life and death situation, he still managed to make her heart race.

Wiping her tears and watching another disturbing call from her uncle to die unanswered once more, she decided to send him another one.

It was already one of the busiest basketball seasons, right?

Her heart continued to pound as she clung desperately to the thought.

He was probably too busy to even hold his phone and give replies to messages he probably hasn’t read yet.

She smiled, holding on to her phone like it was the last thing keeping her together.

You {typing}: Hi my love,

A sob broke out from her lips as it wasn’t only her hands that shook but her entire body.

You {typing}: I am very worried, please call me back. Or should I come over so we can talk?

She sent it and immediately switched off her phone to stop being harassed by her uncle’s incessant calling.

It took a while for her entire nervous system to be at ease. Her grip around the steering wheel tightened as the mascara on her face was quickly smudged with tears and the pain from her soul.

Maybe now that she has just a limited time to spend on this earth, she should probably forget about waiting until she is properly courted and married to him before she gave herself to him.

He has been bothering her about her virginity for months now in this relationship and it was starting to look like the only thing he cared about. She loved Henry so much, so much so to endure his mockery about her still being a virgin at her age and not even knowing what a lover’s kiss was.

Which was ridiculous.

She never had any time for any relationships or gotten close enough to a boy for him to even know her name because her father was once dedicated to grooming her to become his next shadow. The Next business genius that will carry his wealth and name beyond the skies.

Love and bonding with family was considered a weakness to the next little heiress of the Ashworth’s throne.

Not until she broke away from them and realized how much she deeply longed to be loved and have a strong bond with someone. Henry Shayme was the only man she believed will give her all that has been denied of her to become the richest man to ever exist. He was the only one willing to have a girl that was older than him and doesn’t know what it means if a boy should hold your hand.

He denied giving her a first kiss if she was willing to come to bed with him and let him be her first in so many things.

But Corrine wasn’t sure and even though she was a newbie in this relationship, she wasn’t dumb enough to let him have his way with her unless she truly believed he loved her.

And what other way to prove your sincere affection to a person other than a proposal or marriage.

Right?

She was so confused she didn’t know she had been staring long and hard by her side mirror. All her neighbours had already driven out of the lot to face their respective businesses of the day.

If he doesn’t respond after a week, she will have to go to him first.

Corrine fixed her makeup, the cold and distant look she has been wearing since the news returned and she drove out of their apartment complex to face the other issues of her life.

Corrine arrived just fifteen minutes to nine o’clock. She stepped out, her dark pencil heels crunching into the gravel-covered ground surrounding the nine story building of her secondary home.

She ensured every door of her car was locked, this part of Los Angeles wasn’t really safe. And this was the only car she had, she could not afford to lose it to street robbing or vandalism.

Corrine moved with a fast crunching sound. The security guards hired by the building owner were already gathered and early to resume their pose. She noticed how they always turned their heads and stare at her every morning and she wondered if she really always appears different everyday to be worth their stares. freewёbnoνel.com

Her tight skirt showed off her short, yet perfectly curved legs buried in those pencil heels she was so fond of wearing. Her hips are broad and curvy, her waist slim and perfect. Her breasts full and round, her lips plump and dark red in color.

Corrine will frown as she had always been uncomfortable with people staring shamelessly at her like she was some piece of cake they all hungered for. No matter how she tried to appear professional and demure, she always hated how her figure, which she unfortunately inherited from her mom, always made her feel like she really didn’t belong to the corporate world.

Maybe the young, pretty wife of some rich man, spoiled because of her looks with no business knowledge or career path in mind like her mother seemed more fitting.

She rolled her eyes the moment they greeted her and she walked past them without responding. She has heard one or two negative remarks about her from them that she made up her mind one day that they no longer deserved her politeness.

And she wasn’t the kind that welcomed hypocrisy like her mother.

The elevator was faulty again so she decided to take the long stairs all the way to the fifth floor of the building. The cheapest floor whose rent she could afford presently and still looked decent for a working place.

’’Good morning, boss!!!’’

Her two main workers from day one, Lin and Berry rose from their work desk and rushed over to give her a warm welcome like they usually do. A welcome she always secretly looks towards because, regardless of her present situation, it always makes her feel successful and a great boss to people that depended on her for their livelihood.

Winfield Entertainment, established one month after she took a quick loan from a bank three years ago, was into writing and crafting the next big Hollywood hit and also helping aspiring young stars get the connection that they need to fame. Because of her past history as a once, now disowned heiress from a very successful conglomerate, she was able to secure relationships with some of the renowned movie directors, producers and ceo’s in Hollywood.

But unfortunately, none of the movies or dramas they have ever written was promising enough to be invested in no matter how hard they try.

Marcus has made that very clear to them and has pushed them over and beyond their limits to come up with better potential hits.

’’Good morning boss,’’ a shy, old intern of hers named Stylie from Europe came out from the direction that led towards the bathroom. Corrine turned to the petite yet beautiful European as she approached them, bowing in respect for her boss and seniors.

Berry turned to Lin and they both shared a smile.

Corrine only offered to shake her hands before helping her to stand straighter while being oblivious to the other entity, waiting patiently at the corner of the room. His perfectly shaped fingers lightly played with a dark pen as his lips curved softly in amusement.

’’Is it just my eyes or you are all glowing today?’’

Berry, Lin and Stylie all blushed at how silly their boss is.

’’Still keeping me out of the group chat of flawless skin and good skin care products?’’

’’Boss,’’ Berry began with a smile of her own. ’’If there is anyone complaining about not having great skin, then it should be us and not you. You shine everyday and we are all just shy to approach you about the secret to your shine.’’

Really?

Corrine pondered quietly.

The cancer wasn’t being a little bitch yet by being that obvious.

Good.

She should try to hold on until she meets with Henry before deciding on being sent away to Chicago for treatment.

’’Oh, boss. The new intern is here,’’ Lin announced in his strong voice before they all stepped to a corner with deep, red blush on their faces. It was embarrassing.

Corrine looked up as Berry and Stylie giggled by her left non stop but she saw no one.

Until, a pair of haunting eyes peered over the computer, stealing the breath from her lungs.

Her lips slowly parted as the gold in them withdrew fast enough to be swallowed up completely by those familiar, shiny brown eyes.

The one she once prayed never to see again.
