Chapter 32: I Would Prefer

They all filled into the small space of her office, each carrying their scent. But the scent of her new intern was stronger, just like that rainy day he walked in and knew her secret.

Corrine turned around the moment Lin shut the door. Two documents held in her right hand as she moved beside the table, daring not to lock eyes with him.

’’Good morning, Boss.’’

She froze at the sound of that voice. It was clearly different from the voice he had used to threaten her that night.

’’I can bring you back from the dead. And if I can’t, I will make sure everything dies with you.’’

Corrine finally looked up to see that charming and eased look on him. He certainly looked different too.

Hmm.

Corrine placed the first document with her on the table before them. It was a grey-colored folder.

Berry, Lin and Stylie’s gazes brightened with apprehension; only Grim looked intrigued. He thought for a moment if she wanted to appreciate them for their efforts, or better yet thank him for doing something considered almost impossible for her and he was already preparing in his head to stop her from doing so.

It was her.

There was nothing beneath Heaven he wouldn’t do for her if it meant remaining by her side.

Grim smiled again when she turned fully to face them all. That was when he noticed for the first time a significant weight loss.

He frowned.

She appeared paler than the last time he was this close to her. He wondered if she was well.

’’I find it interesting,’’ she began in a voice that naturally commanded respect from everyone who worked under her. ’’That the document that contains all the necessary information relating to this ongoing opportunity provided us just so happen to land conveniently on my lap a few days ago on a rainy night.’’ frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓

The sky outside was clear and sunny but regardless there was a rumble of thunder that followed her voice. It made everyone behind Grim nervous. Their hearts raced as they stared at each other.

’’I also wonder how a total stranger from the streets who happens to be very good at appearing everywhere I went knows enough about this opportunity to get me this document,’’ She leaned enough to stab her index finger repeatedly on the file. Stylie was a literal ghost as the mood changed and tensed, threatening to take their jobs after this meeting. ’’And bring it to me as leverage to work here.’’

Stab.

Oh no, Boss was taking this the wrong way.

Corrine then moved close enough, the sound of her heels creating enough tension as she stood directly before Grim. The face of the man who had seen her trying to take her own life days ago and she was determined not to give him a chance to always have his way with her no matter what.

’’Mr. Hellworth,’’ She began, almost in amusement when he did nothing but match her heated gaze. Grim blinked each time those green eyes moved over him. He wanted so much to carve a precious stone out of those gems.

’’Is there any other thing about me or my business your new friends haven’t told you about yet?’’

Grim said nothing as he remained locked and lost in those eyes. Her closeness affected him more than it should have. He felt as though his world would fall apart the moment she looked away.

But she didn’t look at him the way he looked at her.

His appearance, which had brought kings and queens to their knees, earned nothing from her but suspicion.

’’I really do not need to meet anyone to know everything there is about you.’’

He said, effortlessly seizing control of the conversation. For a moment, he looked more like the owner of the company than an intern standing before her.

A brief flicker of gold appeared in his eyes as he tilted his head to observe dreamily for a while.

And this time, she could no longer consider it as her mind playing tricks on her.

There was more to this Mr. Hellworth than meets the eye.

Corrine didn’t say anything for a while, scoffing at how shameless he was to admit enjoying stalking her.

Then she released the next file she was holding. Placing it on top of the grey-colored folder and the temperature in the room dropped by several degrees.

’’The owner of this document you brought to me happens to be this person right here.’’

Stylie gasped, almost throwing up at the bloodied last moments of Marcus Ivan Laundry. She didn’t know that he was dead. Her eyes wandered to her quiet co-workers beside her in horror, wondering what had happened when they set out that night to retrieve the document for the boss. She could have been with them but she called in sick and tired and they decided to continue the mission without her that night.

Her gaze was full of questions for Berry and Lin which only made Corrine more confident to arrive at a conclusion.

Grim’s gaze flickered to a slightly blurred image of the human who shot him. Corrine took notes of the slightest movement on his face, down to the invisible twitch of his nose. The longer he stared at the image, the more uneasy she became.

’’He just so happens to die on the very night you walked in looking tired and strange with something that belonged to him.’’

Grim’s gaze returned on her sharply. Corrine would have been the biggest liar if she said she wasn’t terrified of him now.

But she would do anything to get this creep far from her radar. The least she expected was for him to fight back—she had prepared a knife close by to protect herself and her employees. The cops were close by. All she needed was to scream and he would be taken down and taken from her for good. She expected him to run or threaten them so they could keep quiet about this.

But she refused to be intimidated by him. The only reason she had responded to him was to lure him in the trap she has set for him so she could get rid of him faster or he denied everything and she will be forced to keep him close to know everything there is about him.

Stupid, dangerous, reckless—she was aware of it all. But there was something about him that had her both worried, drawn, fearful and cautious all at the same time.

’’You killed him, right?’’

Lin gasped harshly.

’’Boss!!’’ Lin held Berry back as she cried out at the unfair statement. Her eyes went to Grim in concern as he stood in the middle of them like some criminal under intense interrogation.

He felt bad, no, hurt as he hid everything under a smile.

’’You have so many creative ways to run from me, Anais.’’

Anais?

Corrine couldn’t breathe.

How did he know about...?

’’That didn’t sound so much like a question that needs any other answer from me. You wouldn’t even believe it if I told you what really happened and I do not wish to even make you feel indebted to me or sympathetic.’’

I only need your affection.

’’But I do have a question for you as well.’’

Oh, no. He isn’t going to...

Corrine stared worriedly at her other employees in the room before staring fearfully at the cold look he gave her.

’’Would you like we both discuss what we both did that night?’’

It was a threat.

He fucking threatened her!

Corrine’s glare dripped with venom at what he will be using to escape her trap this time. She bit down hard on her lips, her hands clenching hard as her eyes remained hateful on him. She wondered why he had implanted his high and mighty self in her life in the first place.

She turned around and he was torn to know he was the reason she was this way. He didn’t mean to take advantage of what he saw her trying to do to herself that night, but he could see her grasping onto anything to get rid of him.

And he wasn’t ready to take from her yet.

Not now.

Not ever.

’’Whatever,’’ she said, picking up the documents on the table and Berry relaxed slightly. ’’I am not in a hurry to get rid of you yet. Since you have worked so hard to become the newest intern of this place,’’ she said, not looking at any of them. ’’You will be paired with me during your internship—-’’

’’I would like to be placed under Berry, boss.’’

Another pin drop silence issued in the room. One that surprised not only Corrine but Berry as well. She blinked severely, a deep blush taking over her pale cheeks as she stared at Grim not getting his logic.

Wasn’t the reason they went through hell and back to make him the newest intern was because he desired to be under Boss...

’’What?’’ Corrine muttered, facing her new intern and looking greatly disturbed. Her eyes flickered over to Berry who immediately gave her the look that she is just as surprised as her.

Corrine didn’t understand.

Didn’t all the stalking, pestering and all this was because he fancied her and wanted to be glued by her side forever?

Her eyes wandered to Berry again before returning to Grim again wondering if she had been mistaken and his desire to be with her was all in her head.

’’I said, I would prefer to be placed under Berry throughout my stay here.’’
