Chapter 27: I’m Coming
Why is it raining now?
Why does it always rain?
It was cold and dark and one presence lingered in the quiet space. Her chair turned to the windows, her head tilted in defeat on the chair she sat on. Her green eyes clouded with unshed tears. They were fixed weakly on the storm happening outside.
It has been several hours past the end of the day and work. She remained in that position, wrapped in her thoughts, not aware of the time that swept by.
An unopened takeaway of cold food lay beside an untouched soft drink.
She no longer felt starved and wished to remain in this place until time is no more.
Henry betrayed me.
Her plum lips, now only a shadow of their former fullness, parted as if relieving the pain.
My Henry.
One tear slid down her sunken cheek and pale form. She couldn’t even blink, the pain was unbearable she could not imagine going through this again the next day.
She dared not tell anyone about this. How her first love had humiliated her and called her so many hurtful names.
Hell, she had arrived at work acting as though nothing had happened. Working even if her mind remained trapped in that very moment of her betrayal. She smiled when she was supposed to. And when it was time to say goodbye to her faithful employees...she remained.
No longer having the will to live.
What was the point of living anymore?
Three years ago, she lost her family—not that they were a real family. Her uncle told her with a straight face of the pending arrival of her death six weeks ago. She stalled her treatment because she still had one surviving hope left.
And now...
Her face morphed at the pain, bringing her hands together around her body in shame. The tears flowed as she moved her seat to gaze at the small table knife.
She was going to die anyway.
There was no point in waiting till then.
Life was only going to be grey, miserable and painful.
Three hundred and sixty-five days filled with anguish, expectations, disappointment and watching the love of your life drift further from you while your dreams remain unfilled...
Corrine’s eyes reddened. Her sobs are broken by small hiccups.
Her hair was starting to fall apart. She vomited blood some days ago and she would rather die now than go through another day of living through many heartaches.
So...
Corrine picked up the small, shiny knife. Her eyes fell closed as she trembled uncontrollably.
It’s better this way.
She placed the sharp edges of the knife on her left wrist and paused.
It’s for the best. She cried harder. Her mind was already made up.
At least in the cold embrace of death, she will finally be close to someone.
Ruby.
Corrine smiled when she heard that familiar voice beckoning her from the land of the dead.
’’I’m coming...’’ Her lips trembled as her grip around the knife tightened. ’’I’m coming, Ruby...I’m coming...’’ fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm
Ruby was right.
How is it living when we have a father that doesn’t care about us? A mother that loves jewelry and flashy things more than us? We have all the toys in the world...yet...I still feel poor. How is it living, Anais, if the dead rests more peacefully than us?
As the knife pressed deep enough to break the skin, a door opened, freezing her in place. The knife slipped out of her hold, falling at her feet with a loud clanking sound.
She turned, looking petrified as she locked eyes with him.
☆☆☆
He walked in like an angel that day.
Like a savior delaying her reunion with the family she has on the other side.
He stepped in like a blinding light in the dark. The rain cutting out all the noise, all the distraction and all she saw was him.
Him.
Him?
Why am I seeing him again?
Corrine looked paranoid wondering how he got in when she remembered locking all the doors that led to this place.
Her tear ridden eyes wondered from the dark baggy jeans he wore. The adorable oversized dark hoodie he had on him, which was fitting but not his style.
She preferred seeing him in those annoying Rolex watches, fitted suit and tie.
What did he say his name was that day?
He stood at the door for a while and she prayed he didn’t see a part of herself she tried so much to hide from the world.
Corrine eased into her cool, and confident manner. The tears dried completely from her face as she glared sternly at him.
He looked exhausted and she noticed the quiet struggle buried deep within those diamond eyes.
’’What are you doing here?’’
She thought she succeeded in getting rid of him when he no longer bothered her until now.
She was on the edge of her seat when he did nothing but stare at her, blocking her escape with his tall figure. Even in the dark, he looked haunting and beautiful. Even in casual clothes, he still resembled someone you don’t want to cross.
Corrine flinched, her heart pounding so loudly in her chest she could feel the pulsating sensation in her ears when he released a strange file on her table. His lovely scent seemed to fill a larger portion of the dark room. Corrine stared nervously at the grey-colored file before meeting with that harsh brown gaze of his.
Sitting under those fiery gazes made her feel small and unsafe in her own office.
He looked upset.
His eyes pinned directly on her and she wondered why a stranger from nowhere would be that upset with her.
What was this?
She felt so guilty as well, her voice wavering each time she thought of facing him. To drive him away. Hell, she was too scared to even call the police. She would rather face this file than him.
She brought it close, her polished fingers trembling as she flipped it open to read the contents. She half expected to be greeted by a bomb or a set of explosives with the tension that buried her deep to her core. But she was in for a much bigger surprise as she flipped through the partly wet and dry pages of the folder.
She finished scrolling through it before finally facing him in utter disbelief. Her mouth parted as fresh tears gathered at the corner of her eyes.
But he didn’t smile.
’’You have two choices now,’’ he began in a voice that was far from the playful, cheerful one she has been haunted with.
’’Be my faithful lover.’’
For a second, she lost composure completely by staring wide-eyed at him.
’’Or,’’ he continued, not giving her a chance to speak. There was an uplifting mood that settled in-between them. He looked much more devastated, hurt, angry, bitter and one hundred and one percent into her.
He did crazy things for her tonight. Only to walk in and realize if he was a second late, he might have lost her forever.
’’I become yours.’’
Corrine’s eyes softened at his words.
’’And I get to stay close to you and by your side forever as your new intern.’’
That was when she noticed the dark stains by his side and she was alarmed to realize he was injured.
’’Are you...okay?’’ She asked, almost getting up from her chair.
Grim said nothing.
How can she see that she was hurt when he was currently using his illusion spell?
’’It’s fine,’’ he said, before turning around to leave. Corrine stared, not knowing what to make of this. Her eyes returned to the grey-colored folder and thought she was staring right at her dreams finally coming true.
She gaped when a force pulled her chair back and she was suddenly cornered to the nearest wall. The sound of the rain seemed louder when he had her pinned on the chair, his left leg moving over the knife, turning it to ash.
Her green eyes widened when he came close enough to awaken all sleeping nerves and emotions in her.
Her breath stilled.
Eyes locked.
And for a fleeting moment she thought he was going to...
Heat tingled and burned near her lips.
’’I can bring you back from the dead,’’ he mentioned strangely but he looked dead serious for it to be rubbish talk. ’’And if I can’t, I will make sure everything dies with you. ’’
’’I will be back in three days for your answer,’’ he promised and moved on from her.
It wasn’t until he left that Corrine finally breathed again.
