Chapter 77: Chapter 77

Riley’s POV

The moment I took that one step forward, everything changed.

I did not even realize what I had done until I heard the first growl behind me, low and deep and very close, and my whole body froze instantly because that sound did not belong to something small or harmless. It sounded big and hungry and angry, and slowly, very slowly, I turned my head.

Wolves.

Not one.

Not two. freёwebnoѵel.com

So many.

They were standing in a circle around me, their eyes glowing under the strange light, their bodies huge and terrifying, and their gazes fixed on me like I was a walking piece of meat. My heart began beating so fast that I could hear it inside my ears, and my mouth went dry immediately.

"Oh hell no," I whispered, my voice shaking.

One of them took a step forward.

I took one back.

Another growled.

Another stepped closer.

"What is this now, what did I do to deserve this kind of life?" I asked loudly, my voice rising in panic because this had to be a joke. This had to be a nightmare. I had not even entered the cave yet, and wolves were already surrounding me like I was their dinner.

"Look, let us talk about this," I said quickly, raising my hands like they could understand me. "I am not even tasty, I swear, I eat junk food, my blood is probably very unhealthy, you will get food poisoning."

The biggest wolf blinked at me.

It did not look convinced.

"Please, I am very skinny too, look at me, nothing to chew, only bones, you will be disappointed."

They did not move.

They did not leave.

They only kept staring.

"Okay, wow, this is awkward," I muttered.

Then suddenly one of them lunged.

I screamed.

"Jesus Christ!" I shouted and turned and ran.

I did not even think. My legs just moved. I ran as fast as I could, my heart trying to jump out of my chest while I heard their paws pounding behind me. The sound was terrifying and loud and too close.

"Why are you chasing me?!" I yelled. "I did not do anything to you!"

One wolf snarled right behind me, and I felt the air move near my leg.

I screamed again and ran faster.

"This is not funny! I am human! I do not even taste good!"

I looked around quickly, trying to find something, anything, because I was not about to die like this. Then I saw a tree ahead, tall and strong, and hope filled my chest.

"Yes! Thank you, universe!" I shouted.

I ran toward it with everything I had.

"Okay Riley, you watched enough survival movies, you can do this, climb the tree, escape the wolves, become a legend."

I jumped and grabbed the trunk.

And my hands passed through it.

I froze.

"What?"

I tried again.

My hands passed through again.

"What the hell is this?!" I shouted, staring at my hands and the tree.

I slapped the trunk.

Nothing.

My hand went through like it was smoke.

I stared at it in shock.

"This is fake?!" I yelled. "Why is the tree fake? Who created this place? I want to speak to the manager!"

The wolves were getting closer.

"Oh my God, oh my God, this is not the time," I panicked and turned and ran again.

"This place is a scam! Nothing here is freaking real!"

I ran past more trees, and all of them looked real but were not. I tried touching another one just in case, and my hand passed through again.

"This is discrimination!" I shouted. "Why is everything fake except the wolves?!"

One wolf growled louder, and I almost tripped.

"Leave me alone!" I cried. "Go eat someone else! There are many bad people in the world, go find them!"

They did not care.

They kept chasing me.

My lungs began burning, and my legs felt heavy, but I forced myself to keep moving. I could not stop. If I stopped, I was dead.

"This is not how I wanted to die," I complained loudly. "I wanted to die old and rich, not as wolf food."

I ran and ran until suddenly the ground ended.

I stopped so fast that my feet almost slipped.

A cliff.

A very high cliff.

I stared down.

It was deep and dark, and I could not even see the bottom.

"Oh great," I said breathlessly. "Perfect. Just perfect."

I turned slowly.

The wolves had stopped.

They stood a few feet away, watching me.

Waiting for my next action.

Their eyes glowed and their bodies were tense like they knew I had nowhere to go.

I swallowed hard.

"Okay Riley," I told myself, my voice shaking. "Think. Think fast. You are smart. You can solve this."

My brain did not work. All I saw was death in front and death behind.

"This is so unfair," I muttered. "I did not even finish my favorite adventure drama and you wolves wanna complete the drama with me"

One wolf stepped closer.

I stepped back.

My heel touched the edge. I looked down again. Then back at them.

Then down. Then back. ƒгeewebnovёl.com

I sighed.

"Wow, this is it," I said. "This is how my life ends. I get chased by wolves in a fake forest and fall off a cliff like an idiot."

The biggest wolf growled again.

I raised my finger at it.

"Stop rushing me! I am trying to die with dignity!"

It did not care.

I looked down once more.

"Okay Riley," I said, taking a deep breath. "You would rather die peacefully by falling off this cliff than getting eaten and torn apart by wolves. At least falling sounds quicker. Maybe painless. Hopefully painless."

I nodded to myself. "Yes. Good plan. Very smart."

I turned back to the wolves.

"You know what, you guys are very rude. No hospitality. No welcome speech. Just straight to murder."

They stared.

"Unbelievable."

I sighed again.

"Okay, goodbye world. Goodbye future. Goodbye good food. Goodbye shopping. Goodbye everything."

I spread my arms dramatically. "This is for my dignity."

Then I leaned back.

And stepped off the cliff.
