Chapter 506: Chapter 507: The Female Ghost’s Wake-up Service_1
In the wee hours, Aiden’s eyes snapped open, alerted by a metallic buzzing sound.
The alarm originated from the metal net covering his bed, which was shaped from a transformed mercury amalgam golem. When he slept here, he would have the amalgam golem take the form of a solid metal net to protect him. Once it sensed someone approaching, the net would vibrate and emit this piercing yet not loud buzzing alarm.
He immediately got out of bed and looked around, promptly spotting a figure standing outside the metal net.
It was still dark outside, and using a night vision spell, Aiden saw a woman with long hair almost covering half her face standing at the foot of his bed, her body draped in a white cloth that appeared particularly sinister in the darkness.
It was Lamia, Aiden remembered specifically booking another room for her yesterday, but here she was, having brazenly entered this room on her own. Aiden had locked all the doors and windows before going to sleep, and they were still firmly shut now; heaven knows how she managed to slip in.
Damn—Aiden cursed silently, though maintaining a stoic exterior.
"Damn!" The spirit of vengeance inwardly cursed without hesitation, "What the hell is wrong with this girl?"
"I don’t recall requesting this kind of wake-up service," Aiden said with a dark expression.
"You have quite heavy security measures in place," Lamia said nonchalantly with a smile, "I was actually planning to give you a good morning kiss."
"Good morning kiss? The kind that eats people alive?" Aiden asked expressionlessly, "What exactly are you up to?"
"Don’t be grumpy right after waking up. To prevent you from overreacting, I specially draped a white bedsheet over myself this time," Lamia revealed, as she lifted the "white garment," her torso faintly visible in the dark.
"Draping yourself in white makes it even scarier, okay?" Aiden retorted irritably, thinking does she have to make a horror show entrance every time?
"So, you actually prefer me naked? Hehe, you should have said so earlier," Lamia said as she casually discarded the cloak-like bedsheet.
"Hmph, kid, why not use the golem to tie her up and then..." The voice of the spirit of vengeance suddenly sounded in Aiden’s mind, "I see she doesn’t mind at all, always dangerously prodding the boundaries."
"I’ve seen inmates do the same in my prison, nothing unusual," Aiden internally responded.
The spirit of vengeance just wanted to see him embarrassed, similar to how Lamia deliberately paraded around in front of him. He found that most of the women he came into contact with had somewhat twisted personalities—they were mostly criminals, after all.
"What exactly do you want, you exhibitionist? If you’re just playing around, get lost and don’t disturb my sleep," Aiden said seriously to Lamia, "Didn’t I say we need to conserve strength before the operation?"
Professor Dodge had moved up the child’s surgery schedule due to a halt in experiments, and Mister Bloodrobe acquired this information through the network established by the infiltration operation.
The plan devised was to strike the base before the scheduled surgery, using the power of the Wordless Code to forcefully invade the restricted core of the research institute, snatch the Divine Artifact infused with Divine Power, and then find an opportunity to negotiate with Professor Dodge, all while avoiding direct confrontation with Mister Bloodrobe as much as possible.
The action was set for the afternoon in a few hours, and so, before going to sleep, Aiden had already released a pigeon, instructing the mercenaries from the Sanctuary of Vengeance to gather by the small lake where he had previously fought Lamia.
About five and a half hours had passed by now, and if the mercenaries from the Sanctuary of Vengeance had set off immediately upon receiving the message, they should be nearing their destination by now. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ
Aiden didn’t want to schedule his actions too tightly. After the past few days of hustle, he had accumulated a considerable amount of fatigue. Even if he could avoid Mr. Bloody Shirt, he still couldn’t let his guard down facing a military base packed with thousands.
"Alright, actually I do have some information to bring you," Lamia said nonchalantly, spreading her hands. "Qiqimora has found something."
"If you’ve got something important, just say it early and don’t disturb my rest any further," Aiden patiently prepared to listen to the report and then go back to sleep.
"Just now, something significant seems to have happened in the research area of the base. There was some commotion and then Qiqimora saw someone with their face covered, being led by a group of officers pushing an operating table into the restricted area of the base," Lamia reported.
"An operating table?" Aiden became alert, "Was there someone on it?"
"Yes, completely covered. However, Qiqimora ’voided’ the coverings and saw through to see a person inside. The body was deformed, skin and bones, with no muscle tissue observable. Protrusions were on the back along with a bony tail. From my professional point of view, these are traits of demonization," Lamia analyzed. "That demonized young man looked very weak, almost dead. It’s possible that he was also one of the test subjects, but the reaction of the base personnel was off."
"Impossible, no living demonized beings have ever come out of the core area; everything that comes out is disposed of as waste! How could a finished product be moved back into the core area from the outside?"
"So the person who brought the operating table in was indeed..."
"Professor Dodge!" Aiden stated with certainty.
From what Lamia described, Qiqimora hadn’t seen anyone being swapped out.
Qiqimora was previously unable to enter the restricted area, which indicated that it was at full capacity. If no one had come out, yet they were still able to enter directly, then either someone inside had reconfigured the Divine Artifact or they had killed off two test subjects to free up space. The person entering must have held a certain status within the base, purposely bringing in a demonized being like a VIP patient—other than Professor Dodge, there were no other candidates.
"The operation was scheduled the day after tomorrow... no, it should be tomorrow now," Lamia said.
"Judging from the situation that Qiqimora observed, Professor Dodge’s son might have had an emergency. It’s not the time to be sleeping now; we need to set off immediately. I hope the mercenaries from the Hall of Vengeance are already assembled!" Now, Aiden was completely awake. "Damn, why didn’t Qiqimora contact me directly?"
"You were sleeping too deeply. In that state, the Great Witch’s token couldn’t summon you, so Qiqimora contacted me first..." Lamia shrugged.
"Then you should have told me the important stuff at the start!" Aiden exclaimed as he secured his belt and tucked his sidearm into its holster.
"Well, it’s because your grumpiness when waking up scared me," Lamia raised her hands and gave a mischievous smile.
The thought of shooting her flashed through Aiden’s mind.
But he didn’t have much time to consider such trifles now.
"Lady Phoenix..." he called out mentally to the Goddess of Vengeance. freewebnøvel.com
"I know, I was just about to tell you..." The Goddess of Vengeance chuckled darkly in his mind, "Bad news though, our enemy is also in town, but it seems he’s started moving towards the outskirts."
"Just great... It couldn’t get any worse," Aiden commented.
