Chapter 1290: Chapter 1288: Kiss Interrupted
Richard Shaw hung up the phone and then spoke in a deep voice, "Clark Landon has taken the Landon Family away, saying he will take good care of them and won’t let them set foot in the Imperial City anymore. He wanted to see you, but I refused."
Richard Shaw said this with tea-colored eyes slightly raised, glancing at Leah, seeing that Leah was not angry about him making decisions on his own, he smirked lightly.
Upon hearing Clark Landon’s name, Leah’s expression turned slightly dazed; the only person in the Landon Family who had given her warmth ultimately became like a stranger due to the family’s issues.
"It’s just as well not to see him," Leah said softly, "Back then, Nova Howard was very fond of Clark Landon. If there had been no incident in the Landon Family, perhaps Clark Landon would have already married the sixth Miss of the Howard Family."
Nova Howard was born into a prestigious family, yet she was simple and lovable, very endearing.
If the Landon Family hadn’t fallen out with the Shaw Family, due to the Shaw Family’s influence, the Howard Family’s matriarch naturally would have agreed to this marriage. If Clark Landon had married Nova Howard, he really could have achieved great success, but alas.
According to Lana Shaw and Calliope Shaw, Nova Howard later married a college classmate, had a son, and lived quite happily. That college classmate was also a gentle and elegant man, somewhat similar to Clark Landon.
Richard Shaw knew nothing about this, but thinking about the Howard Family’s standards for choosing a son-in-law, such a family like the Landon Family indeed had little chance with them.
"Why haven’t you kept in touch with Nova Howard? I remember that little girl was like your little shadow at that time," Richard Shaw asked in a low voice; Leah had too few friends, and Delphine Carter was occupied by Old Li every day, making it difficult for Leah to visit Delphine Carter frequently.
Lana Shaw and Calliope Shaw were only taken care of to some extent because they were from a branch of the Shaw Family; Leah and them might not really get along that well.
"She doesn’t know I’m Crystal Landon; Lana Shaw and Calliope Shaw didn’t tell her. Nova is simple-minded; as long as she’s doing well, it’s fine. If there’s a chance to meet later, it won’t be too late," Leah said with a slight smile.
While they were talking, they soon arrived at the Shaw Mansion. Cornelius Turner had been waiting outside for an unknown length of time; upon seeing Leah return, his eyes lit up as he stepped forward, glanced at Richard Shaw, and then said, "Miss, Ian Coldwell is gravely ill, and Miss Aurora Coldwell isn’t willing to come to the Imperial City, she wants to stay in Brocade City."
Cornelius Turner didn’t manage to bring anyone over, and worried about Griffith Squire, he hastily rushed back to the Imperial City.
Leah heard this and frowned slightly, asking softly, "What’s the situation in Brocade City?"
"Very bad, rumors are flying everywhere, saying the boss won’t make it out alive. The aboriginals who were previously suppressed are now very proud, and after Ian Coldwell fell ill, Zoe Kingston frequently goes to the Coldwell Mansion to make trouble, creating all kinds of public opinions. In short, it’s quite a mess. Fortunately, I left some manpower in the Coldwell Mansion, and Miss Aurora Coldwell is temporarily safe," Cornelius Turner said. When he arrived in Brocade City, Zoe Kingston was at the Coldwell Mansion sneering and ranting, but despite this, the young lady of the Coldwell Family stayed composed and expressionless throughout, calmly seeing her stepmother out, leaving Zoe Kingston bubbling with anger as she left.
"Alright, ensure Aurora Coldwell’s safety, send more manpower, and let the natives in Brocade City do as they please for now, wait for my brother to come out and handle them," Leah said with a smile, noticing Cornelius Turner using the term "aboriginals," suggesting his deep resentment towards the people of Brocade City, "You go back and rest, you’ve been busy traveling back and forth."
"Understood." Cornelius Turner looked slightly relieved; coming from Brocade City’s chaotic environment, he was indeed mentally exhausted. "Miss, is there any definitive news from the boss’s side?"
Leah looked towards Richard Shaw.
The man had been quietly standing by the car door waiting for them to finish their conversation; despite his long-standing position of power showing his demeanor still intact, the years had refined him into maturity and restraint. Seeing Leah look his way, he took a step forward and spoke steadily, "Pressure is already being applied on the authorities, given the case is concluded; they are using the excuse of finalizing paperwork to detain him, but they can’t hold him for more than 72 hours. Two days have already passed; he’ll be out latest by tomorrow."
The case had remained unsolved for a long time, with many watching closely. Griffith Squire, as the son of the involved party, hadn’t any reason to suffer. However, once the case concluded, Griffith Squire’s status changed; as an international broker, these 72 hours would be hard-learned.
But that man was like a cat with nine lives, strongly prepared upon entry. Richard Shaw even prepared a doctor, ready to wait outside.
Cornelius Turner sighed in relief upon hearing this, hesitating slightly, as if sensing the man’s concern, who then reassured him in a low voice, "Relax, there won’t be any issues."
Though Richard Shaw was stripped of power, his long-term prestige remained, and connections were still intact; protecting an individual wasn’t an uphill task.
"That’s good." Cornelius Turner nodded, scratching his head awkwardly, "Miss, I’ll return for now."
Unexpectedly, the boss he had regarded with animosity for so many years turned out to be the one working tirelessly for their matters; the unpredictability of life seemed to be just that. Cornelius Turner’s thoughts were momentarily muddled, feeling awkwardly distant when looking at Richard Shaw, and hurriedly left upon realizing the way things stood fine.
Richard Shaw watched Cornelius Turner’s retreating figure, turned to Leah, and laughed in a deep voice, "Why do I feel your brother’s loyal aide is very afraid of me?"
Leah couldn’t help but laugh at the remark, casting him a sidelong glance and huffing lightly, "Cornelius Turner is the sharpest blade in my brother’s hand, a tough guy, would he fear you?"
Seeing her finally laugh, a smile as radiant as flowers spreading across the Cloud Summit, so captivating, the tea-colored eyes darkened slightly, and without a word, he reached out to embrace her slender waist, lowering his warm lips deeply onto her smiling lips, swallowing her laughter.
The man’s lips were warm and soft, carrying a hint of innate possessiveness, deeply kissing his beloved girl at the ancient and secluded mansion’s door amidst the fallen leaves scattered all around.
The geographical location of the Shaw Mansion was quite special, with only a few residents nearby, concealed under the towering street trees, very tranquil. Knowing Richard Shaw was out, the Shaw branch’s third household contained their inner restlessness, knowing that the first day of return, the main house wouldn’t be in the mood to entertain them, decided to wait an extra day, coming late in the afternoon the second day.
Yet as the car arrived at the Shaw Mansion entrance, they saw the pair kissing at the doorway. Lana Shaw nearly pressed the gas pedal thinking it was the brakes, and barely avoided hitting the wall.
Seeing the normally solemn and reticent elder cousin possessively embracing Leah for a kiss at her own doorstep, interrupted by them! Lana Shaw saw Richard Shaw with a slightly grim expression lift his eyes, glancing coldly her way, causing her hand to tremble, almost making her cry.
Dear cousin, she truly didn’t mean to; had she known earlier, she wouldn’t have overtaken.
She truly saw nothing at all.
