Chapter 10: Nathaniel Stands Up For Her
Editor: Henyee Translations
"Me? I’m Daddy’s good girl, of course. Something weird is going on here. I was just outside, when I heard the butler say that this lady got kicked out for serving my brother celery, which is something he is allergic to." Mia spoke in an innocent tone that sank into Rose’s heart like a knife.
"An allergy is a very serious thing, but you don’t seem to think so. Does that mean... you actually wanted my brother to have an allergic reaction?"
Rose’s mind went blank.
"I-I didn’t mean that! Nathaniel, don’t listen to their nonsense! Where did these little country bumpkins even come from?!"
Nathaniel’s gaze darkened instantly.
Estelle was utterly stunned. Weren’t these two her little babies? But weren’t they supposed to be abroad? Why were they here with Nathaniel, and why were they calling him Daddy?
Zachery met Estelle’s gaze for a split second, then quickly looked away with a guilty cough, thinking, ’Uh-oh... Mia, you’re up.’
Mia, on the other hand, remained perfectly composed. "Grandmother, we’re no country bumpkins. We’re Daddy’s adoptive children, you know."
Rose trembled with rage. "Adoptive children? How dare you speak to me like that? Do you even know who I am?! I—"
Mia blinked innocently, her each word sounding intentionally sharp. "Of course I do. But didn’t you abandon your own flesh and blood for a fake daughter? You’d call me a fake heiress, but isn’t that just perfect? It proves your teachings have been passed on excellently, and Daddy must have picked those skills up from you."
Estelle was at a total loss for words.
Zachery quietly stepped back and left the battlefield to Mia.
The words "fake heiress" had struck Noelle’s heart like a blade. Estelle had been dead for five years, so why was she still haunting her like this? It was Estelle’s fault alone that she had ever been considered a fake heiress. She shouldn’t have shown up in the first place.
Rose felt as if she had been slapped twice in a row. Her restraint finally snapped.
"Nathaniel, look at her! She’s mocking me! What do you mean, I abandoned my own daughter? If Estelle hadn’t gone too far back then, I would never have done such a thing! Think about everything she did. She caused trouble the moment she returned to our family! She even deliberately fell into the water to frame Noelle, leaving poor Noelle heartbroken for years..."
Estelle felt nothing in her heart. She had already heard those accusations countless times during her two years in the Lockwood family.
To her surprise, Nathaniel’s expression turned icy and he barked sharply, "Enough! What happened back then is over. You claimed that you’ve moved on, yet you bring it up every chance you get. I know exactly what you’re trying to do."
Estelle’s head snapped up. Was Nathaniel standing up for her?
That was impossible. That drowning incident had caused a huge uproar. It had clearly been Noelle who had pushed Estelle into the water, yet Noelle had played the victim so convincingly that everyone had believed Estelle had tried to harm Noelle and had fallen down when she had failed.
Estelle couldn’t even swim. When she had finally crawled out of the water, she had not been comforted. She had only felt cold stares on her and heard mocking whispers around her.
Meanwhile, Nathaniel had stayed by Noelle’s side the entire time. Not once had he looked at Estelle, not even to ask her a question.
So how could he possibly be standing up for her now? Perhaps, he just didn’t want that name dragged into the conversation.
Rose froze, momentarily left speechless. She tried to speak again, but Nathaniel cut her off coldly, "Who the hell do you think you are to curse her name in front of me? I’m the only one who gets to settle that score with her. You have no right to do so."
Then, he added in a merciless tone, "Get her out of here."
The butler immediately stepped forward and escorted Rose away. Meanwhile, silence fell over the living room.
Mia and Zachery exchanged a glance, then quietly shuffled closer to Estelle.
Estelle glanced at them, then silently mouthed, "Follow me."
Nathaniel watched as the two children followed her obediently like little tails trailing behind her.
Noelle’s jealousy burned so intensely that she could barely maintain a calm expression. After a pause, she forced out a soft, pitiful voice.
"Nathaniel, don’t take my mother’s words to heart. This is all in the past. I’ve never blamed my sister. Besides, she’s already—"
"Christian still hasn’t forgiven you for what you did. What are you doing here?" Nathaniel cut her off coldly.
Noelle’s smile froze, but she soon forced a bright smile. "Nathaniel, I came today to discuss something important. It’s about the Star Group gala..."
Meanwhile, upstairs, Zachery and Mia stood upright against the wall, their heads lowered, looking like two little quails.
Estelle’s expression turned serious. "Explain yourselves. How did you get here?"
Two five-year-olds had travelled abroad by themselves, and that alone made Estelle feel a wave of lingering fear. Why were they so stubborn? Weren’t they afraid something might happen to them?
Zachery coughed lightly and tried to suck up to her. "Mommy, we came back with your assistant. Don’t worry, we didn’t get lost or kidnapped by bad guys! Mia may not be smart enough, but I’m super clever!"
Mia threw a questioning look at him. Silly little Zachery was calling her "not smart enough"?
Estelle almost laughed out loud from anger. "So you’re saying you’re in this right now?"
Zachery shot a look at Mia, who cleared her throat and said sweetly, "Mommy, you can’t blame Zachery for this. We just felt worried about you, so we wanted to help. See? The moment we arrived, we made that cunning mother and daughter back off. I did a good job, didn’t I?" freewebnσvel.cѳm
Estelle’s heart softened.
She had not intended to tell the children about what had happened between her, the Lockwood family, and Nathaniel, but they had overheard everything once when she had been on the phone with Penelope.
Knowing they meant well, Estelle simply couldn’t be cold to them anymore.
She said, "Nathaniel is not an easy person to deal with. You’d better stay by my side at all times. I’ll take you to kindergarten tomorrow. I also have a gala to attend tonight and I can’t take you with me. You will behave yourselves and call me if you need anything."
Zachery promised, "Don’t worry, Mommy. That scumbag has no idea what we’re up to. He still thinks our real dad is dead!"
Mia felt that Zachery was a bit too confident about this, but she had no proof that he was wrong.
By then, the butler had made up the room for them. Zachery took Mia’s hand, and the two of them headed to their room.
Meanwhile, Christian quietly peeked around the corner on the sly. Were they his brother and sister?
He wanted to go to kindergarten with them, but would they approve of that? He needed to find a way to do it.
It seemed that the two of them didn’t like Noelle either, so perhaps he could...
Christian was thinking as he stood there for a while, eventually making a bold decision.
In the meantime, as Estelle was about to get back to her room, she received a call from Henry Kendrick, the Vice President of the Star Group and her good friend.
"Hello, Yara. The gala will be held at the Crestfall Grand Hotel. I’ll send someone to pick you up."
Estelle agreed and said, "I want to keep a low profile. I don’t want to draw too much attention. For now, I don’t want anyone to discover my connection to Star."
"Alright, I’ll handle it..."
At that moment, she happened to walk past Nathaniel’s study, and voices could be faintly heard from inside.
"Nathaniel, let me go with you to the gala tonight. I heard the President of Star is also a woman, so maybe I can be of some help. Everyone has a date to the gala, except for you. If I’m around, I can also help you drive away any unwanted admirers, you know..."
The rest of her words weren’t clear, but Estelle heard Nathaniel’s cold reply.
"Suit yourself."
’Suit yourself. That means he is going to take Noelle to the gala. In that case...’
Estelle turned to the phone and said, "Change of plan. I don’t want to keep a low profile anymore."
Then, she pushed the study door open with a bright smile and asked,
"What are you two talking about? Mind if I join you?"
