Chapter 19: 19. Cannot sleep

A young girl, about fourteen or fifteen years old, arrived with her maid.

A luxurious horse-drawn carriage was parked near Kaileon’s simple one.

It was clear that the girl was of noble birth, especially since her extravagant dress stood out so much there.

She was beautiful, with pale white skin and blonde hair. Kai didn’t recognize her, but her face looked somewhat familiar to him. As if he had seen her somewhere before.

Before Kai could even ask, the girl suddenly laughed. And it was clear that it was a mocking laugh. Moreover, the maid with her also laughed mockingly, following her young lady’s lead.

"Excuse me, but who are you?" Kai asked, confused.

Hearing that, the girl’s expression turned angry.

"How dare you say you don’t recognize me! I’m Laura Maustrine—how could you not recognize me? This is an insult! Your osister said you like me, so I came here to mock you and reject you outright—"

"Shh! Miss, you shouldn’t say things like that... this is supposed to be a secret!"

Kai furrowed his brow, not understanding the strange situation.

So, the beautiful girl’s name was Laura, and she was Luca’s older sister. No wonder her face looked so familiar.

But wait a minute, older sister? The only older sister Laura could possibly be referring to is Jessica. Duke Hendry’s eldest daughter, or Justine’s older sister, who’s only a year older than Kaileon.

"So, what did Jessica tell you about me? Besides, I’ve only just met your brother, Luca. So it’s not strange that I’m just finding out about you now, right? You showed up without a proper plan, immediately getting angry for no clear reason like this—you just look ridiculous to me. And I just met you now—how could I possibly like you?"

Hearing that, Laura’s flushed cheeks turned even redder with embarrassment.

"You..."

Suddenly, Kai held something out to the girl. It left Laura confused, but she accepted it without hesitation.

"Eat it quickly; it’s vanilla ice cream—perfect for when your mind is all tangled up. If there’s something important you need to tell me, go to the pavilion; I’ll be there. Excuse me..."

Kai turned away immediately after giving Laura the vanilla ice cream, which he’d bought from the supermarket for himself. Since he hadn’t eaten it yet, he just gave it to Laura to help her cool off.

Confused and embarrassed, Laura turned around and went back to her horse-drawn carriage.

"Young Lady, you came all this way just to meet him, but—"

Laura immediately turned to her maid with an annoyed look.

"Didn’t you see that? Jessica said that Kaileon is weak, a coward, ugly, and easy to bully, so he’d make a perfect slave for me. But what I saw just now was the exact opposite of everything Jessica said—he speaks well, he looks handsome, and his gaze left me speechless, unable to say a word and looking ridiculous. We need to prepare more thoroughly—wait, he said he already knows Luca, right? Let’s go see Luca now!"

"Yes, young lady. Young Master Luca is currently at Young Master Justine’s place."

Kai couldn’t sleep that night. So he got out of bed again, throwing open the window he’d closed just a moment ago.

Shadows of the past came back to haunt him. They popped into his mind out of nowhere, flashing by without warning.

Kaiden’s past as a killer and Kaileon’s past as an abandoned child in a luxurious building. It all forced its way into his young mind.

It gave him a headache that night.

But Kai didn’t do anything; he just sat there staring out the window. fɾēewebnσveℓ.com

Back on Earth, he’d always drink coffee to keep himself sane.

Wait.

He could still do that.

After all, the supermarket system was open 24 hours, just like some convenience stores back on Earth.

So Kai ordered a hot coffee—this time, a butterscotch coffee in a medium-sized cup.

He didn’t forget to buy a cup of instant noodles either. As a side, he bought an egg and some cheese.

Just like at a convenience store, Kai could prepare everything through the supermarket system for just the cost of a small bronze coin.

When the cup of instant noodles appeared in front of Kai, everything was ready to eat.

He hoped the hot coffee and hot cup of instant noodles would warm him up and help him forget all his dark thoughts.

Because all those dark thoughts were taking a toll on his still-fragile body.

Kai was lucky because, at his current age, he was still allowed to eat anything, as long as he didn’t overdo it.

Back then, as a trained hitman, Kai had to keep himself in top physical condition, so he couldn’t be overweight.

Even though the system urged him to eat more, out of habit, Kai couldn’t help but do the things he usually did when he couldn’t sleep at night. Just like back on Earth.

Namely, exercise.

Kai stepped out of his room—or rather, out of the pavilion. free𝑤ebnovel.com

Since there was a path circling the lake, Kai decided to go for a light jog around it. His plan was to exercise until he felt tired and worked up a light sweat.

Accompanied by Nini floating ahead of him, Kai began jogging along the lake’s path. Besides being a cleaner, the cat-shaped robot could also emit light, illuminating the path.

Actually, there were already lights along the path, but of course they weren’t very bright compared to the lights back on Earth. Besides, Kai’s main reason for bringing Nini along was simply to have a companion.

Well, even though the night sky in Ardhez—or the Arslan region—was incredibly bright. Even the stars and the moon were clearly visible.

Uh, actually, in Ardhez it’s not called the moon, but Lunez. It’s a bit larger than the moon, but it looks almost exactly the same. Kai even forgot that it wasn’t the same moon he used to see on Earth.

But suddenly, the system screen just popped up in front of Kai.

[Do you want to complete a mission to obtain a healing magic reward?]

Kai stopped his light jog.

After obtaining elemental magic, the system stated that Kai could actually receive almost all elements, especially the elements of light, earth, and water. The healing element is actually a branch of the light element.

Kai didn’t fully understand that, but he knew this mission was a great opportunity for him.

Besides, if he obtained the healing element, his standing there would improve significantly. And for sure, he could resell all the healing potions.

But wait a minute—good rewards usually come with difficult missions to complete.

Monsters again?

"Tell me what the mission is."

[Hunt the firebirds flying around the barrier created by Duke Arslan]

[There are about three firebirds; they’re big, edible, and although they can’t enter the barrier, their feathers can fall and set the forest ablaze]

[The birds were sent by someone targeting Duke Arslan, from the demon kingdom, intending to burn the forest so the fire spreads all the way to the castle]

"You said they’re flying?" Kai asked, grinning.

He then bought a few small daggers from his supermarket system. New daggers are usually very sharp, even if they’re cheap ones. For the price of one small bronze coin, he could get five daggers.

A simple tool that Kai had mastered; it was very effective because it made no sound when used.

"It’s been a long time since I threw daggers. Show me the way to the firebird monsters; this is pretty good exercise," Kai muttered.

With high enthusiasm, he immediately walked quickly, following the direction

indicated by his system.
