Chapter 237: RACING

Abigail

The printer hummed softly beside me as I gathered the last stack of documents for the quarterly review.

I was just organizing the papers and turning over what could possibly be happening at the station when I felt strong, familiar arms slide around my waist from behind.

Finnegan pulled me back against his chest, his chin settling on my shoulder. His warmth wrapped around me instantly, but I could feel the tension coiled in his body.

"They’ve taken my mother," he said quietly, his voice low against my ear. "The police already took her to the station."

I stiffened in his arms. A flurry of excitement burst inside me. Finally, the woman responsible for so much pain was finally facing consequences.

But I swallowed it down hard. Gina was still Finnegan’s mother. No matter how monstrous she was, this had to be cutting him open.

I turned slowly in his embrace, searching his face.

His eyes were heavy with exhaustion, grief, and something that looked like resignation — like he had already stopped trying to defend her or believe there was anything redeemable left in her.

"That was fast," I murmured. "They only just arrested the mole this morning."

"Yeah," he said, his voice rough. "It’s better this way. Delaying only hands her more time to plot something nefarious."

"So what happens next?" I asked softly, my hands resting against his chest.

Finnegan’s thumbs traced slow circles at my waist. "It’s your case, baby. What do you want to do? If you want to go to the station and watch the interrogation, we can. I’ll go with you."

I shook my head. "I can go alone. You’ve already done so much."

"No." A pained look carved itself across his face. "After what happened yesterday in that parking lot... I’ll never forgive myself for that. You’re not going anywhere without me."

I cupped his jaw in my hands. "Hey... that wasn’t your fault. You can’t shield me from everything, Finnegan."

"I will," he muttered. "I have to. Because nothing can protect this world from me if anything happens to you." ƒreewebɳovel.com

His words hit me straight in the gut. I pulled in a slow breath, blinking.

"That’s very sexy," I whispered, and he laughed, shaking his head as a small smile tugged at the corner of his lips.

We left the office shortly after. The drive to the police station took about thirty minutes, but it felt like ten because Finnegan and I got completely carried away making out in the backseat until James eased the car to a stop.

I genuinely hoped I didn’t look like I’d been kissed out of my senses when we met Benjamin in the observation room.

Through the one-way glass, we watched Gina at the interrogation table, and it irritated me deeply how composed and unbothered she appeared. Atticus, her lawyer — the traitor — sat beside her while the detectives pressed question after question.

The woman said nothing. She was exercising her right to remain silent. After nearly an hour of going nowhere, the detectives had no choice but to release her.

I genuinely could not believe it. Gina rose to her feet, smoothed her dress, and walked out with Atticus into the observation room. Her eyes found mine across the space, and she smiled.

"See you in court."

My blood ran hot as I watched her walk away.

"So she just gets to leave?"

"The proof we currently have only establishes her as a suspect," Benjamin explained carefully. "Until she is tried and judged, that’s all she is. But the good news is that your parents’ case can now remain open for full investigation."

"And then what? We play cat and mouse until Gina finds a way to win again?" I said sharply.

Finnegan’s hand tightened around mine. "Calm down, Abigail."

"Be assured, Miss Kellerman — we’re actively searching for the primary suspect, Mr. Devin Wolfe. When we locate him, you’ll be the first to know."

I had a full arsenal of words ready to fly, but Finnegan steered me out of the station before I could release a single one.

On the drive back to the office, I couldn’t keep still. Restlessness and anger churned through me like something corrosive.

"I just feel so restless," I muttered, staring out the window. "So angry. Like something in my gut is telling me we’re not going to win this. If his mother is willing to throw her own son in prison, what would she do to me?"

Finnegan reached over and took my hand, pressing it to his lips. "You know what I do when I get this frustrated?"

I turned to look at him, a shiver moving through me at the dark, intent look on his face. "You take it out on me until neither of us can think straight?"

He groaned, color rising faintly along his jaw. "That mouth of yours."

I blew him a kiss and he laughed softly. "There’s something else. I think it’ll help us all feel better. I’ll show you tonight."

It turned out Finnegan meant racing. Actually racing. That night, just after half past eight, we left the house in two cars. River, Annette, and Angel rode in the first. Finnegan and I took the second out to Arthur’s racetrack, newly launched and already buzzing.

The place was alive — lights blazing, engines growling, the thick smell of fuel and burnt rubber hanging in the air. Arthur, Eric, and Henry were already there, laughing near the pit area.

"Well, hello Abigail," Henry grinned broadly. "I see the caveman finally let you out of his cage."

"Henry," Finnegan warned, his voice low, while I ran my palms lightly down his chest.

"Honestly? I like his cage," I winked at Henry, who pulled a face.

"I see exactly why you’re mad about her."

"Uncle Hen!" Angel shrieked, sprinting toward him with her phone raised. "Smile for the camera!"

"Only if your dad promises to race tonight."

My eyes went wide as I glanced up at Finnegan. "You race?"

"He didn’t tell you?" Eric laughed. "He’s an absolute madman on the tracks." freёwebnoѵel.com

I stepped closer, smoothing my hands over his chest. "Just how many sides are there to you, Finnegan Wolfe?"

His arm curled around my waist, drawing me in. "Stick around long enough, baby and you’ll find out every single one."
