Chapter 236: THE ARREST
Third POV
Things were going according to plan, or at least that was what Gina Wolfe thought when she pushed open the heavy front door of the luxurious matrimonial home that had once belonged to Finnegan and Victoria.
And should still belong to them, but no one was particularly concerned about that now, except the press and Victoria’s old antics. Gina had far more important things to think about.
She stepped into the living room and stopped short. Victoria was pressed against the back of the sofa, her dress hiked up around her thighs, moaning softly as Devin kissed her deeply. ƒreewebɳovel.com
His hands moved possessively over her body, one tangled in her hair, the other gripping her waist. Victoria’s fingers clutched at his shirt, pulling him closer like she couldn’t get enough.
"Oh, for goodness sake." Gina’s lips curled in annoyance, eyeing the scene with barely concealed disgust.
It wasn’t like she hated Victoria — no, the girl was decent enough, and her sweet boy loved her. It simply infuriated her when they both lost their minds and forgot that they still needed to be extra careful.
Her son pulled back slowly, lips glistening, a lazy smirk settling on his face. Victoria had the decency to look mildly embarrassed as she smoothed down her dress, her cheeks still flushed.
"Mom," Devin greeted warmly, dragging the back of his hand across his mouth. "You’re early."
Gina let the door fall shut behind her with a sharp click, her gaze narrowing on them both. "Early? Or just in time to remind the two of you how dangerous this little game of yours is?"
Her cold eyes cut to Victoria. "You’re supposed to be playing the devoted wife in public, not throwing yourself at my son while Finnegan is still legally your husband. It’s barely eleven in the morning!"
Victoria straightened, lifting her chin. "We were just playing around. I missed him, you know that."
Any other time, Gina might have shrugged it off and let the two of them have their moment. But she was furious. Finnegan cancelling her projects had gutted her primary source of funds.
Now that her path to CEO of Wolfe Corporation had been severed, everything else was unravelling with it. And she still had to move faster before Finnegan and that insufferable Kellerman girl pushed their investigation any further.
"Save it," Gina snapped at Victoria before turning to Devin, her expression softening just a fraction the way it always did for her favorite child. "Devin, you know better. One slip and everything we’ve built comes apart."
Devin shrugged, pulling Victoria firmly against his side. "Relax, Mother. We’re careful. It’s not like Finnegan is going to walk in here. And I’m tired of sneaking around. Since he knows I’m alive, there’s no reason to keep hiding."
"He knows you’re alive but not that you’re sleeping with his wife," she said sharply.
"Do you want to destroy everything? Your birthday is barely a month away. We were supposed to have him neutralized by now."
"Instead, I’ve lost my shot at the CEO position, the board is turning against me, and that Kellerman girl is still breathing down our necks. Victoria, instead of wasting time with Devin, you should be making sure your reconciliation tour actually holds. Yet here you are playing house while Finnegan pushes for divorce."
Victoria opened her mouth but Gina raised a hand, cutting her off.
Devin chuckled, grazing his lips against Victoria’s neck. "Relax, Mother. We handled Owen Smith and got rid of the witness. After scaring the Kellerman girl with his head, she’ll be too terrified to keep pushing. Just like her grandparents were."
Gina’s eyes flashed with fury. "You think fear works on Abigail Kellerman? That girl is strong-headed. I’ll give her that — she’s courageous and stubborn as hell. But there’s a thin line between courage and stupidity. If she keeps digging, she’s going to find out exactly how thin that line is."
Victoria wrinkled her nose. "Sending her the head was so gory. Did we really have to go that far?"
Devin grinned, pulling Victoria back into a kiss. "It’s all part of the game, darling. The thrill makes it worth it."
Gina watched them with barely concealed impatience. "Enough. Keep this hidden until after we put Finnegan behind bars. If he get proof that Victoria has been unfaithful, the divorce sails through too easily."
"We need her legally married to him so Devin can step into his place without a seam showing — married to Victoria, raising Angel, and running Wolfe Corporation. Are we clear?"
Victoria finally pulled away from Devin with a sigh. "I know. I’m still playing my part."
Gina’s phone rang. Her brows drew together when she clocked the screen. It was the mole she had planted inside Wolfe Corp. "What?"
The man’s voice was frantic. "Mrs. Wolfe... I’ve been arrested. They called me into Mr. Wolfe’s office this morning and the police were waiting. They’re accusing me of planting the head on the girl’s car. I don’t know how they found out I was working for you, but they did. Please, you have to help me-"
I am surrounded by idiots, Gina thought, her jaw clenching. "You had better not breathe a word about us, or you’ll be the next head in a box."
The man choked out something incoherent before the line went dead. Gina set the phone down hard, fury radiating off her in waves.
"They caught the mole."
Devin lounged back against the sofa, looking entirely unbothered. "So we get rid of him too. Simple."
"No," Gina hissed. "We can’t keep eliminating everyone. It makes us look guilty. We need to cut out the root of the problem. And isn’t it something — the root of all our problems has now tangled itself together. First it was just Abigail Kellerman, then Finnegan separately. Now the two of them are moving as one, like a pair of calculating fools working directly against us."
She snatched up her coat. "I need to think. I’ll be back later."
Barely forty minutes later, as she turned onto the private road leading to her estate, several police cars materialized out of nowhere, boxing her vehicle in from all sides.
She eased to a stop, watching the officers climb out and move toward her car.
"Mrs. Gina Wolfe," one of them called out.
"We’d like to have a word with you down at the station."
