Chapter 83: Chase (1)
What Nolan couldn’t understand even more was why Scarlet didn’t send Ian away after kissing her. He noticed that she looked annoyed by the sudden kiss but Scarlet only muttered something under her breath.
What exactly had he missed? How wrong was he to guess that after the divorce Scarlet wouldn’t let anyone get this close to her again?
Nolan put aside his feelings for now as he couldn’t stand to have Ian enjoy getting under his skin. He would love nothing more than to wipe the smile from Ian’s face with a punch but knew that was going too far over someone being near Scarlet. He had lost his chance and there was nothing he could do about it.
Still, it didn’t feel good to watch a stranger be so close to Scarlet. Toying with her hair and her not saying anything about it. This wasn’t the Scarlet that Nolan knew.
"Another complaint from your relatives or a request as they see it. They are hellbent on getting the estate from you. Your parents would have gotten a letter. They also want the home that was passed to Edgar Collins from his grandfather. None of your close relatives use it," said Nolan, passing the letter to Scarlet.
"Of course, we don’t use it. It is rented out for visitors to that town. They are relentless and foolish to think that sending all these complaints would end in them getting to my home," Scarlet said as she opened the envelope.
"When that fails, they’ll resort to trying to harm you again-"
"Again?" Ian interjected as this part was important.
Nolan didn’t answer Ian since he worked for only Scarlet. "This is a private matter, Scarlet."
"It is fine. Who doesn’t know that my greedy relatives would love to kill me? Just when I thought I didn’t have to hear from them. You don’t need to be so concerned that you personally deliver these letters. I am always watching their movements to be prepared. Are you listening to me, Nolan?" Scarlet asked as his mind seemed to be elsewhere. ƒreewebɳovel.com
"He seems a little distracted, doesn’t he?" Ian added fuel to the fire.
"I am not distracted. I am focused," Nolan replied.
"You make a terrible lawyer with how easy it is to spot your lie. Do you need me to leave so you can do your job better? I’d be happy to help if you ask nicely. Go on," Ian said, awaiting Nolan’s plea.
Scarlet rolled her eyes, tired of the two and their antics. If she could, she would open the window and throw these two out of it. Luckily for them, Scarlet didn’t want Glenn to be coming around asking about either one of them.
"You should stay silently by her side," Nolan responded.
"Well, at least I am by her side," Ian said, letting Scarlet’s hair slowly fall through his fingers.
Ian wouldn’t be surprised if the lawyer had dreamed of raking his fingers through Scarlet’s hair but he was never fortunate to do it. Yet here a man who hadn’t been in her life for long stood close to her, touching her hair.
"Enough!" Scarlet exclaimed at the end of her patience with the two. "You are no different than children. Sunny is more well-behaved than you two. Is that all, Nolan? I don’t want to keep you from your other work."
Nolan hesitated saying that it wasn’t all at first. He was here to give her the letter but to also check on Scarlet. He was still worried about how she was taking the divorce and with all the talk about her having a man around her which was unlike Scarlet, he thought to stick around the estate.
’If I had been quicker would that have been me?’ Nolan wondered. He might have missed his window once more after hesitating to share his feelings.
"He’s turned mute," Ian teased.
Nolan would never be competition with how hard he found it to speak to Scarlet. It was rather cute or more of a joke to see a grown man acting like a love-sick teen in front of the woman he liked.
Scarlet looked up to Ian after hearing him snort. "Was I not clear when I said enough?"
"That was all. If there is anything more, I will call or send someone to deliver it. Have a good day," Nolan said, deciding to leave. He had enough of watching Scarlet be close to another man and luckily, he had other work to do to keep himself busy.
"Nolan, there is something we must talk about urgently. I will visit you when you are free," said Scarlet.
This made Nolan worried as he had always come to Scarlet to avoid her having to visit his office. She didn’t want to be bothered by the other men working for her father trying to get her to hire them. He had done something wrong but he couldn’t think of it.
"You can join him in leaving," Scarlet said to Ian. His little squabble with Nolan had ended her small, small interest in letting him stay to bother her. "Take your carriage with you."
Ian wasn’t upset with her telling him to leave as he had a trick up his sleeve. "If I walk out that door, you’ll be chasing me."
Scarlet laughed as the chance of that was zero. It needed to be looked into for how much of a dreamer Ian was. He was a little too confident in himself.
Ian bent down to reveal, "I received an invitation from Samara Collins for dinner. Goodbye."
Scarlet’s eyes widened and by the time the shock left her, Ian was already around the desk. "Wait!" She called, getting to her feet. He could not leave now after revealing this. This should have been the first thing he said when he arrived. "Do not leave!"
"Isn’t the chase wonderful?" Ian asked Nolan as he passed by him. He continued on his way out as it was about time that Scarlet started to do some chasing. It wouldn’t be fun if he was the only one doing it.
Nolan didn’t respond to Ian as his attention was on Scarlet following Ian out of the office, not even saying a word to him as she passed by. What exactly had Ian said to get her to react this way?
Nolan looked at the small boxes on Scarlet’s tables which were obviously gifts. Against his better judgment, Nolan walked to the desk to see what was inside the already opened box. "A teapot? Why would he get her a teapot?" He wondered
The Scarlet that Nolan knew was going to throw this out. She should have done it already but maybe she was being polite. Nolan couldn’t resist placing his hand on the teapot to break off one of the flower decorations.
His eyes widened the second he did it as he couldn’t believe how jealous he could be to ruin a gift. Nolan frantically placed the lid back on the box and hurried out of the room. He must have lost his mind to do such a terrible thing.
"Mr. Hurley," Florence greeted Nolan as soon as he stepped outside. "You look a little faint."
"I’m fine," Nolan replied, hurrying past Florence to continue his escape.
