Chapter 60: A jealous man (3)
"Welcome back, Lady Collins. May I take the hat?" Florence asked.
Scarlet handed the hat off to Florence for it to be put away. "Thank you. Were there any calls for me? Any letters sent or something worth noting?" frёeweɓηovel.coɱ
"Just a few gifts to win you over but I have thrown those away. Oh! There was an envelope from the palace. It looked to be an invitation. I will get it."
"Don’t. I’m not in the mood to hear anything from the palace. It must be an invitation to sit down to speak about my divorce and heaven knows that I don’t want to hear about their troubles. Only seek me out for important matters," Scarlet instructed Florence.
"Of course. May I intrude and ask how the party was?" Florence asked, eager to know if Scarlet enjoyed herself. Scarlet was long overdue for enjoying herself with someone who wouldn’t bother her. The servants were all on their toes.
"It was interesting," Scarlet answered. "Why are you smiling so, Florence? You’ve been doing it all morning and now I can’t ignore it. Out with it."
"I’m just excited to see you in better spirits. Forgive me for overstepping with my curiosity. I’m sorry," Florence apologised, bowing her head.
"What are you bowing your head for, Florence? Are you taking up a new job as a priest?" Scarlet questioned and then walked inside as it looked like the rain was going to fall again.
Florence smiled as Scarlet’s questions were always funny to her. Others didn’t think the same but she knew the young heiress’s humour. "Not at all. That kind of job would not suit me. The church does call from time to time wondering when next you would show. They must wish to thank you for all the donations. And the orphanage."
"I will pay them both a visit when I have time. It’s been so long since I saw any of the Callahans. I am going to rest in my bedroom and then do a little bit of work later. I don’t want to be disturbed unless it is important," said Scarlet.
"Understood. Would you like something to eat or drink?" Florence asked as it was nearing time for Scarlet’s afternoon lunch.
"No, thank you. I’ve eaten already," Scarlet answered whilst looking around for Sunny. "Where is Sunny?"
"Last I saw, she was in your bedroom," Florence replied. She was confused as to where Scarlet had eaten as there wasn’t anything that changed on Scarlet’s schedule aside from the garden party and it was odd that Scarlet returned alone. "Did she eat at the party? How surprising."
Scarlet made her way up to the second floor, still looking around for Sunny in case the cat was causing trouble with the maids. As long as Sunny liked you, she always wanted to play even at the worst times.
It was unfortunate for Ian that Sunny didn’t like him because she would not be pleasant with him.
Scarlet opened her bedroom door and to no surprise, found Sunny curled up on her bed as though it belonged to her. Scarlet looked to the right of the bed where the expensive cushion she had made was abandoned like always.
"Sunny, you’re the only one who begs, gets me to waste money, and I don’t mind it. You’re lucky," Scarlet said, closing the door behind her to then walk to the bed.
Scarlet sat down beside Sunny and it wasn’t long before the cat moved to be on her lap. "I’ve had a headache all day dealing with fools. Will you comfort me?" She asked, lifting the cat to her face to be comforted by the touch.
Scarlet smiled as Sunny purred and rubbed against her. "Traitor," she accused the cat after Sunny jumped from her hands and ran away.
Scarlet was left alone, sitting on the bed. She looked around the large quiet bedroom and found herself bored. There was nothing to do. No one to speak with at the moment unless she went back to Florence.
This was the moment often brought up by others where it was said that she would regret not working out her marriage. Rather than allow the quiet room to place negative thoughts in her head, Scarlet decided to get work done.
...
Nearing night, Ian laid on his bed tired from a few hours of training with a sword. It was an old hobby he kept up with though he fancied using guns more. The sword hitting the target was better to help him release his anger instead of using a gun.
A knock at the door disrupted the peace Ian created in the room.
"I deserve a good payment for how fast I moved to find who you sent me for. I was in luck because he went around babbling about Scarlet and got drunk out of his mind. Why did you almost make him fall, Ian? So rude to someone older than you," said Owen.
Ian sat up from the bed. "Where did you put him?"
"Where else but in the usual room? You can just kill him anywhere since you’re living in a murder house. He’s trying to offer us a lot of money to release him. You’re lucky that I am loyal enough to decline the offer," Owen joked, making way for Ian to exit the room. "You’re in a foul mood. That’s not good for him."
Owen followed Ian to the room Robert was tied up in. He knew this would end badly since Robert was still a little drunk so he was out of his mind and spoke of something that happened to him today. Occasionally mentioning Scarlet.
Ian could hear Robert yelling at someone as if he had a right to order around anyone in there. Just hearing that voice made Ian want to kill him right away. "It seems you not only lack being a good guest at a party but in someone’s home as well."
Robert couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw who walked in. "You bastard!" He spat, his insult fitting for Ian as that was exactly what Ian was. "And your father dared speak up for you. Is this because I attempted to court her? Every man with sense is looking to court her. She’s rich."
Owen tapped his mouth, hoping Robert would pay attention to it and shut his mouth. Not speaking what the best way for Robert to live a little longer. After years of being around Ian, Owen knew that when Ian warned you not to piss him off that was his more calm side. When he was quiet, he was fuming.
"You want her all to yourself? Is that it? Or were you planning to wed her and found me as serious competition? She’s rich but someone in your position would have better options so do whatever it is you are planning and then toss her back to us for those who wish to marry her. Let me go at once," Robert commanded the three men.
"At once?" Ian repeated in a mocking tone.
"I am a man with many connections all around the kingdom. If any harm comes to me, not even the Kingsleys will be able to save you," said Robert.
"Hmm," Ian hummed, going to the back of the chair Robert sat on. "Very well, I shall let you go, but not here."
Robert felt relieved, but it was only momentarily as he found himself going backwards, and then his chair dragged toward the door. "W-What are you doing?"
"What you requested," Ian replied, ignoring the noise made by the chair legs as he dragged Robert toward the back door leading out to a pond.
