Chapter 59: A jealous man (2)
"The party went well. There were so many to congratulate us and invite us to their homes or to parties they would host. We’ll be the talk of the town in no time and all attention will be on our wedding so I must pay careful attention to it," said Beth.
"We’ll have a small wedding," Jack said, leaving Beth’s side to get himself a drink.
"A small wedding? Ha," Beth laughed since it was a terrible joke. "Why?"
"I’ve been married before so I don’t see the point of having another grand wedding."
"But this is my first and what I consider to be my only wedding so I think it should be what I always imagined. You’re going to be spending the rest of your life with me and I think you’ll regret it later on if we don’t have a good wedding to look back at. Please,’ Beth pleaded, following Jack to cling to him.
She had already started to say that her wedding was one to look out for so she couldn’t turn back now to have a simple wedding. Simple and her wedding should never be in the same sentence.
"What is bothering you, Jack? You’ve been in an awful mood since we left the party and nothing I did has been working to cheer you up. Whether it is about the baby or just complimenting you. Do I bother you with what I say?" Beth asked.
Jack sighed, not in the mood to explain himself to Beth, but she was right. "It is not you. I am tired of all the questions about who Scarlet is with. I need a drink to put myself in better spirits. Then we can talk about the wedding you want and the baby."
Beth let go of Jack’s arm, annoyed that his mind was still on Scarlet. She was also tired of how the conversations even after Scarlet left were about Scarlet.
It was meant to be a day to show off their engagement yet it became all about Scarlet and the man she was seen with.
"I am surprised that she has moved on so fast after everything you’ve told me about her. Son of Lord Kingsley," Beth said, still in disbelief that was who the man was. "Still, he’s a bastard. Layla Kingsley has made it clear and warned everyone to be careful around him. Is that what concerns you?"
"No," Jack replied, but he didn’t believe his response.
He warned Scarlet to be careful of the man around her and yet, she was still showing up with him by her side. Jack didn’t care that this Ian fellow was the son of a lord. They knew nothing about him. Ian was probably looking to use Scarlet.
It was also strange that Scarlet was interested in having someone by her side. This wasn’t the woman he was once married to. Was she putting on an act to make him jealous? That would mean that she still loved him. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom
It was like Scarlet to have a hard time showing her feelings so she would have to do something else to get his attention. It was working as she was constantly on his mind and he wanted to peel Ian from Scarlet’s side. The space beside her stood empty for a little longer.
"Don’t speak to him whenever you see him. I don’t care what Hank Kingsley plans to do with him," said Jack.
Beth watched as Jack poured himself something strong. She didn’t believe that he was upset only from the questioning. She was aware that he still thought about Scarlet. A baby couldn’t change that but she was good at distracting him.
"Rather than drink yourself to the brink of being drunk, why don’t we start planning what room should go to the baby or names? I know that it must be upsetting to see your ex-wife moving on. Anyone would still be thinking about the person they once spent their life with so I won’t be jealous of you watching out for her," Beth said, playing into her caring role.
"If you wish to make sure that he is not looking to harm Scarlet then I won’t be upset. You’ve moved on but you won’t feel good until she has moved on to someone else who will care for her. You can admit to me that she is what is bothering you."
Jack turned to Beth. She truly was an understanding woman. Putting others before herself. Any other woman would be yelling at him now for thinking of Scarlet when he was engaged to someone else.
He wasn’t being fair to Beth or his child by having Scarlet on his mind as much as he did these days. It was only so long that Beth could accept him thinking about another woman.
"Come here," Jack ordered Beth. He put the cup with the alcohol down as it might cause him to do something he might regret. "I apologise. I sometimes feel that she is still my responsibility. For betraying her, I still have to watch over her, but you are my responsibility."
"It is me and someone else you must look after," Beth said.
"Yes, you and the baby." freeωebnovēl.c૦m
"I will allow you to look into this Ian just this once but then you must move on. I don’t think you need to keep trying to make up for being with me. I don’t think she cares and you helped to end a marriage that wasn’t making either one of you happy," Beth said, wanting to shove it down his throat for him to finally listen.
"You must learn to move on or you’ll miss what happens with your first child. I try to understand as I have no room to speak but it concerns me that you will leave me and this child-"
"I am not that kind of a bastard, Beth. I wouldn’t leave my child. Listen, let’s talk about this wedding that you want instead of this. You deserve a grand wedding for all that you put up with and I intend for this to be my last wedding. I will call for a planner tomorrow," Jack said, his mood changing seeing Beth smile.
He had a wonderful woman by his side who smiled when he spoke and clung to him. Jack couldn’t want anything more. He shouldn’t yet his mind kept going to Scarlet. He could have lived knowing the stubborn woman wouldn’t move on or with the town enjoying speaking about her, she couldn’t move on even if she wanted to.
Beth jumped up and down upon hearing this news. Her efforts had paid off and now she would make those who spoke down on her jealous. She could never understand how other women said it was hard to get something from their men when all you needed to do was tell them what they wanted to hear.
"I love you," Beth kissed Jack. "Now, enough sulking and more planning for the baby and the new house that I heard you speak of. I must start planning a dinner to impress your peers. Maybe having your friends around will help you feel better."
