Chapter 207: Future plans (3)
"Should we be concerned by why your brother was poisoned? If your father is Hank Kingsley, I could understand that being a lord would bring him some enemies but why your brother?" Rue wondered.
If it was her who wanted someone in the family dead, she would aim for Hank or Layla. Unless Ian’s brother was some kind of evil man who had many enemies.
"He mistakenly consumed poison meant for me. I will pay whatever price you come up with for helping him. Even if you can’t find a way to help him," Ian said as too many years might have passed for anyone to be able to help Victor.
"I won’t ask you for money. I don’t like it when anyone plays around with poisons. My family used them when we were at war and to look into them to find cures. Too many are dying from secretly being poisoned and most of the time, it has to do with wealth and jealousy," Rue said as she had seen this many times.
Rue could never sell her poisons to anyone as she didn’t think they had any reason to get their hands on poisons. She would not help to make it easy for anyone to kill someone else. They already had to worry about guns and all the new weapons being made.
"As soon as we finish spending some time with our son, I will return to the border with Ryan. Your brother will need to come with me then so myself and many of the experts there can take care of him. He has nothing to fear since the border looks no different than this town," Rue promised.
Ian’s brother would be in good hands travelling with her and Ryan.
"Thank you," Ian replied. With this, he had one problem taken care of. "Scarlet wants me to leave so now I must go."
’Why?" Rue turned to Scarlet. They were just getting to know Ian. She almost got to watch a duel and now Ian gave her a reason to go to the border to play around with poisons. "I am calling my son here with his wife so you should stay for dinner. Why don’t you invite your poisoned brother so I can start questioning him about what he consumed?" freёwebnovel.com
Rue continued, "Doesn’t that sound fun everyone? Eli?"
"It does. Please," Elijah requested on behalf of his wife. "Just for one night let us have a big dinner."
"Very well," Scarlet agreed. Rue was already making her sad eyes so Scarlet couldn’t say no. "But you must stay here tonight. I will have a room prepared for my parents as well. Alana, looks like we are having another party already."
Alana was thrilled as dinner was always better with more people here. Now she would get to see what Ian’s brother was like. While Scarlet didn’t seem fond of the Kingsleys, Victor might become a lord so he was a good candidate for her to consider.
"Good," Rue clapped her hands. "Now, please excuse Eli and I. He wants to look around for some of the old portraits. Would you mind if we take a few with us, Scarlet? We will send back a few of the ones we already have."
"It is fine with me. I will need to tell Florence to have them unwrapped for you. I have been thinking of sending them to a painter to have them recreated. A few of them are being spoiled because of the time that has gone by," said Scarlet.
Before the portraits became unrecognisable she would have them made anew and send them to her grandfather as well as his siblings. With that, Scarlet now thought a good gift to Ian would be to have more portraits done of them together and along with that, she could force him to have some done of himself. It would be a win-win for both of them.
"That would be wonderful. Ryan, have some sent from the manor so Scarlet should display them here. Or, should we save them all for the family home so everyone could take a trip down memory lane? I will help with recreating some portraits. Come let us pick which one Eli," Rue said, taking Elijah away from the group.
"Your grandmother is always cute, Scarlet. I hope to be as energetic as she is when I am older," Alana said, finding Rue to be a good inspiration. "Ian, is your brother looking to marry? And if he is, what is he like?"
"I must stop you right there as Luke and Victor’s mother were planning to arrange an engagement between you two. Stay away from any man Luke thinks you should marry. Ian and I will accompany you to the first party you were invited to. Dawson will be your guard," Scarlet said, noticing how Alana frowned for a split second.
"If you and Ian will be there, why do I need a guard?" Alana asked. Out of all the guards, why did it have to be that insufferable man who only wanted to annoy her? freeweɓnovēl.coɱ
"Because you are a princess you must have a guard. Dawson has been guarding you when he is not by my side so you should take him since you are familiar with him. He does well at his job so I trust him to take care of you. I can’t be at your side all night," Scarlet said as there would be moments when she wanted to be alone with Ian.
"Very well. As long as he stays quiet then it cannot be so bad. Thank you for accompanying me. Please move me away from men that you have some knowledge that would not be the right fit for me. I do not want to waste my time with anyone who has debt, wants some power in the palace, or has secret lovers. You will help me, won’t you?" Alana asked Ian.
Who better to help her than a man?
Scarlet thought Alana was speaking to her so she was surprised to see it be Ian whose help she wanted. "I shall leave the two of you to discuss that. Ryan, I would like to continue our conversation that was disturbed. Excuse us."
Ian smiled as he picked up on a little jealousy. To think she had this side of her to be jealous that Alana wanted his help.
Alana stared at Ian as his attention was focused on Scarlet. "I hope I can find what the two of you have. In a crowd of people, your eyes always go to Scarlet. She is not eager for it to happen, but I can’t wait for the two of you to marry. For it to truly be official. It must not take too long."
"It won’t," Ian said, certain of it.
